Say a prayer for John McCain

Who passes from his earthly pain

His eyes are shut upon his brow

He warmongers to angels now

Beyond the sky, where sorrows cease

He rails against the Prince of Peace.

The Holy Spirit, full of love

McCain denounces as “a dove”

All of the weak and the cowardly policies

Heaven pursues that let sin subsist still

Six thousand years of detente with the darkness

In hippie cliches about “choice” and “free will”

All the fifth-columnists, communists, peaceniks

Since ur-commie Lucifer fell from the dawn

John McCain pounds them, he trounces, denounces them

Hounds them and counsels them: cease and begone

All of the saints and the hosts of the angels

Run to their weapons of lightning and flame

Their swords made of sunbeams and sighs of the martyrs,

Their gossamer banners of God’s awesome Name,

Their heavenly helmets and holy habergeons,

Whose breastplates are bright with the light of the dawn;

The Archangel Michael in malachite armor

Blows blasts on his trumpet and beckons them on

Reader, should your weather be

Meteors falling lazily

Or if your neighborhood should seem

A John of Patmos fever dream

Then say a prayer for John McCain

Now passed beyond all earthly pain

Not death, with all the peace it brings

Could end his love of bombing things

My general rule is not to go outside if I haven't had a shower in the last 2 days or if I've fapped since I last showered. It works out that in a general week I'll shower 3 times, and 2 of those are rushed

on the weekend I usually have a 30-45 minute shower because it's basically the only chance I get in a week to stand in an isolated space with no distractions and calm down from the stresses of life, but mum often has a fit knocking on the door since she thinks I'm wasting water - even though if you do the math I'm using less water than the majority of the population who take daily showers

Using my phone a hotspot works and has been working this entire month the same as when I didn’t use it. Does anyone know what this means and what I can do to fix it?

I sincerely prefer 7A to 7B. Two mid range Moffat episodes, two mid range Chibnall episodes with an aggressive "comfy" feel, and one mid range Whithouse episode, with a loose and mercifully brief thematic arc running through them, is relatively easy to get through.

No episodes as bad as Nightmare in Silver or JttCotT, no Gatiss, no impossible girl teases or 11 having a boner for Clara, no Maitland siblings, and no lingering sense that they've given up on pushing Smith's performance to new places. Plus it has Brian.

the poster seems completely reasonable and was probably deemed necessary based on people coming in and asking them to put on sports - like they say, there's over 87 sports bars in the area so people on a pub crawl and not paying attention wouldn't realise that it's a niche bar. But at the same time they might not read that sign either.

why is someone so verged by people with different interests that they're pulling out the incel card?

I think the

>We will not be showing sports unless it is Battlebots, drone racing, or Quidditch

line is what tips the poster over into virgin territory, but I agree it's absolutely uncalled for to conflate "a bar themed around nerdy hobbies rather than sports" with incels. Maybe if the poster was full of implicit misogny or sneering at chad archetypes there would be a good joke in there, but it's pretty polite and even-handed all things considered, so there's no reason to cynically smear the establishment.

It's indicative of why modern DW BF is (imo) so shit; it's gone beyond stagnation, stagnation is being mired in shit, this is recycling, making new shit from old shit, in the shape of old shit. They'll probably be pleasant and make some folks happy, and I'm happy for them, but they frustrate me beyond just my surface level reasons for disliking them because it's such a do-over. It is for an anniversary so I am moaning about this a lot. If they continue beyond the anniversary I'll have licence to moan more. I can't lie, even as an anniversary "good old times" boxset I really hate the idea though because even though it comes later, it stills mutes her death a bit. Like everything BF these days it takes away all consequence and meaning to make an environment where stories can just be churned out forevermore, regardless of any weight to them. I mean look at the fucking set, they're talking up a Fendahl story. BF talk up the idea that they're essentially regular BF-ing BF stories in the press release like that's a cool thing (cramming in new stories awkwardly between existing ones, except for an existing BF series instead of a TV season), but it's just offputtingly incestuous to me.

>“The dynamic between Sheridan and Paul was always brilliant,” says Nick. “So it was genuinely moving to see the two of them working together again. Sheridan walked straight into her old recording booth without any hesitation and without anyone guiding her to it. It was like she and Paul had been recording together only the day before. There was a brief moment, when I observed them through the control room window, having their reunion. I couldn’t hear what they were saying, but I just saw them hold each other’s faces in each other’s hands. Big smiles, heartfelt emotions, and then they were straight into their first scene. A truly magical moment.”

That's nice though. I know I am just an old git about these. I'm happy for Sheridan and for Paul…god knows he needs a bit of joy these days, especially from BF.

Yeah Morph's cool but what about Tomtit

 No.85821

In the months since Twice Upon a Time's ending, many, many people have had different theories on how 13 will survive falling out of the TARDIS. A popular theory is that 13 will just fall to the ground, but be healed by post-Regeneration energy. This is the titular face-plant in the title of this thread.

I do not want this too happen for a variety of reasons.

REASON NUMBER #1: It's not a good first impression.

Put yourself in the following scenario. You are a first time viewer. You never watched Doctor before, but hearing all this hype surrounding this new Series, you decide to tune into Series 11 episode 1.

The episode begins with 13 falling. She is trying to find someway of saving herself. You are glued to the screen. How is this character going to get out of this one. You keep watching to see… her plummet face first into the ground and survive seemingly by magic (remember, you're new to this, you know nothing about Regeneration, or only very little. To you, it's magic).

Do you think that is a good first impression? I certainly don't think it would be.

REASON NUMBER #2: Post-Regeneration's previously demonstrated abilities.

The Post-Regeneration energy theory really falls flat to me, as the only real evidence for it is two episodes, The Christmas Invasion and Let's Kill Hitler. Lets examine the use of P-R in these stories.

In the Christmas Invasion, the Doctor regrows the hand he just lost in battle. He doesn't get stabbed or blown up, just his hand gets chopped off. Just before he regrows his hand though, he says this: "Because quite by chance I'm still within the first fifteen hours of my regeneration cycle, which means I've got just enough residual cellular energy to do this."

KEY WORD: residual.

He's only got just enough cellular energy to do that. He isn't able to heal himself fully, but he has enough leftover energy from his regeneration to allow him to regrow the hand. He wouldn't be able to survive a straight 3+ mile drop.

Now on to Lets Kill Hitler. The part of this story used as support for this idea is the moment River Song is shot and heals. Now, first up, River isn't a Timelord, just someone who was genetically engineered to be as close as possible to one. It is within the realm of possibility that the Silence made changes to her close to Timelord biology to make her even more dangerous.

BUT, assuming that isn't the case, there is still nothing to suggest P-R made River immortal or able to survive everything in her body shattering/being ruptured from a fall of several miles, cause if the 8th Doctor died permanently after a spaceship crash, I doubt 13 would be able to survive a fall from three+ mile height.

REASON NUMBER #3: a cop out

This reason is really just a personal one, but in my opinion, having 13 survive via Post-Regeneration would be a cop out. We've been left on that cliffhanger for over 8 months, and the solution to how she gets out of it is that she just falls but is fine cause of P-R energy? That'd feel very cheap to me, and also annoy me upon rewatching P-R stories, cause where is the bloody threat if the Doctor is immortal for the episode? How is the villain meant to have any impact if they can just P-R energy out of it? Not to mention it makes Regeneration even more overpowered. I liked Regeneration best when it was just a transition between actors and a way to cheat death, a way to cheat death that had limits and consequences. But in NuWho, they've made it into a super-powerful energy can heal any injury, create duplicates and destroy a Dalek Mothership. I don't want to rag on NuWho, cause I never like being negative, but this is just an issue I have that I needed to bring up, cause I need to get out my frustration once in a while.

So, thoughts, counter-arguements? I'm going to have a lie down now, cause I've literally spent an hour writing this. Please make sure you're elaborating on your opinions, to generate in-depth, meaningful discussion. Thanks.

Quite a few things were weird about his writing if we're gonna talk about that. That bit with Susan was a bit weird, but I'm not really that bothered by different interpretations of characters. It's not like it's the first time in Who that one character has been written in one way while another writer sees the dynamic differently. Peel had probably seen a certain image floating around and decided to draw from a source if you get what I'm saying. War's rejiggering of the Dalek timeline was quite interesting (despite me knowing about Antalin and that whole business before going into the book).

I preferred War over Legacy because The Master appearing in Legacy makes me feel that Peel didn't have enough faith in the story just featuring the Daleks in the story alongside the human antagonists and then chucked The Master in towards the end to have his own take on the Delgado incarnation getting mutilated. Saying that, however, I do like that Susan is the one who does it. It's also a better end for him than the comic version of Delgado's regeneration.

 No.85924

>>85923

I wasn't a big fan of War because, while I find timeline jiggery pokery amusing, it never engaged me as a story. Legacy is a clusterfuck but I think we'd both agree it's an interesting one. There's a lot of stuff just smashed together. Peel throws a lot at the wall. I gather all of it didn't stick for most readers; some stuck for me. I agree with you about the ending twist. I liked it too. Interesting collision of lore elements. What I really liked with Legacy is, even as messily as Peel did it, it tried to give Susan character unto herself, separate from the Doctor/David/new family members, etc. Feel like Briggs' handing of Susan was a lot more boring and "grandfather!"-esque. Sure as hell didn't get anything like your spoilered event in the EDAudios.

Have you seen the fanart of the marine Daleks from War?

 No.85925

>>85923

There was also that line between Sam and Loran in War of the Daleks about Loran calling Sam "desirable" without realizing that she's a minor. He realized that he'd made a big mistake and it was never brought up again, but it was a weird conversation that I hadn't expected to see in a Doctor Who book.

The usage of The Thals in War was quite interesting, and their end-goal was quite strange. I felt that Peel was trying to mirror the fact that The Thals and the Daleks are very similar in behavior when they're up against it. War's bodycount wasn't especially bad, but the way that some of the deaths occured felt like a scene out of Resurrection of the Daleks Balatan getting shot for no reason and sliding bloodily down a wall + the top of Delani's head being blown up by Ayaka are two good examples of this.

 No.85926

You'd assume that in the Susan would have gotten over the "Grandfather!" stage in the Briggsverse. She seemed to have gotten over it in Legacy which was nice.

Great:

>Dead Romance

>Alien Bodies

>Unnatural History

>Against Nature

>A Romance in Twelve Parts

Great (but you might be alienated by experimental formats):

>The Book of the War

>Of the City of the Saved

>This Town Will Never Let Us Go

>The Adventuress of Henrietta Street

Good/Okay:

>Newtons Sleep (i personally think is 10/10 but that's not a super popular opinion)

>Warlords of Utopia

>The Book of the Enemy (impossible for me to rate objectively)

>Weapons Grade Snake Oil

>The Taking of Planet 5

>Interference

>Burning with Optimism's Flames

Meh:

>Erasing Sherlock

>Warring States

>Liberating Earth

>Spinning Jenny (see i'm not just sexist)

If you're really interested in getting into it, I highly recommend reading "Alien Bodies", then "Interference", then "The Book of the War". Really rewarding sequence. But most of everything is standalone, so you could really start wherever. See https://doctornolonger.tumblr.com/post/162831787778/how-to-start-fp

Plus, river song is zero important to the wider Who canon…sorry casual american fuckfans….Also, this is way more important because it brings back the original canon cybermen. and funny, it wasn't moffatt (even though i cant stand him) who started that mess…..

 No.86090

I'm trying to make this one more positive, and use reasonable criticisms, so as not to give the impression that it couldn't possibly have done anything right.

I know that attempting to portray the Time War in its full horror and glory and do it justice would not be possible. If it had a billion dollar budget and a team who was invested in the implications of timey-wimey warfare they could make something very impressive and terrifying, but it would still let down a lot of people.

What I'm suggesting is to show just a few small glimpses, and make it clear that there is much worse stuff going on offscreen. As it stands, "The Day of the Doctor" acts like what we see, a pew-pew battle like what the Doctor encounters regularly, and just over one planet, is all there is.

You can't show the full brunt horrible surreal stuff and do it justice, but you can show just a few bits and pieces. For instance, have vehicles and soldiers caught in time loops, like the car in "Father's Day." Maybe show someone hit by a strange beam and have them age to dust like the guy who chose poorly in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." Or show portions where time has accelerated or slowed down.

Another great idea is to show glimpses of unnamed, mysterious entities or monsters in the background or in the shadows. Perhaps have people on Gallifrey reacting with terror to something just offscreen, or even a brief shot of Time Lord soldiers and Daleks temporarily working together to shoot said offscreen thing. They could also have horrible inhuman noises, like distorted shrieks, coming from creatures offscreen. Remember how the Demogorgon in "Stranger Things" was much scarier when it was in the shadows and we didn't see it directly? Something like that. Don't name them explain what they are, except maybe with Clara asking "What was that?" and a Doctor responding with "You don't want to know." Let the audience speculate. It would be scarier than trying to show the Horrors directly, AND it would take little budget!

The second part is to establish that what we're seeing is not the worst part by a long shot.

In the War Council meeting, there should be a couple lines of dialogue about the wider scope of the War and the horrors involved. For instance: "The Nightmare Child has just devoured one of our moons! We have a fleet of Battle TARDISes holding it back from Gallifrey but we don't have enough firepower to bring it down!" Or "We can't evacuate, the Time Vortex is swarming with Neverweres and all our off-world bases are overrun with Travesties!" Instead of what we got, which implied that the pew-pew siege over one planet was the entire War.

The second place to do this is when Clara and the Doctors see the projection of the battle at Arcadia. Have Clara say "This is horrible!" And one of the Doctors responds with something like "This is nothing, it's only the edge. The real battle's happening in the Time Vortex, if you saw that your brain would melt."

Finally, we need some kind of explanation for how the larger scale War is ended. Remember, the previous canon established that the Time War was fought across time and space, even on the last day. Saying that the fighting continued after Gallifrey vanished doesn't work. It cheapens what was supposed to be the final battle, and it doesn't make sense. If that were the case, we would expect numerous survivors of the War, not just a handful who were hiding or fell through time at the explosion. When the Doctors come up with their plan to freeze Gallifrey, have one of them (or even Clara) object, saying "What about the rest of the War? It was across all of time and space!" and have another Doctor give some kind of line explaining it. Something like, "The explosion will be powerful enough to send a shockwave through the Time Vortex that will destroy all the other battles" or "Gallifrey is the lynchpin for all that, remove it and the chaotic timelines of the other battles will collapse and the dead will stay dead. It will a be over."

Obviously this wouldn't fix my thematic gripes with "The Day of the Doctor," such as the message of "If you do something bad the correct way to deal with it is to get a time machine and change it," but it would resolve the issue cheapening the Time War to a standard pew-pew battle over one planet.

I'm not saying they should actually change "The Day of the Doctor," but if they did and make a George Lucas style "special edition," this is what I would do.

>Davies’ view of the Time War is inherently different from Moffat’s, and that’s where most of the discrepancy between the 50th and the RTD era comes from. In “End of Time” we saw the Doctor affirm that it was right for him to stop the Time Lords and by extension, send them back into the hell of the flames of the Doctor’s final act in the Time War. For a while there, it even felt like that’s where the story of the 50th was going to go, to the Doctor again reaffirming the choice he had made. All the Doctors supporting one another in making the hard decision to use the Moment, for the good of the future and the many worlds he would save. It was a beautifully complex moment, of one man choosing to be the villain to create good. The theme was even offered, “Great men are forged in fire. It is the privilege of lesser men to light the flame.” What a beautifully mature message, a recognition of the purpose of some evil in the landscape of life, with the heroism of the War Doctor being that he did become the lesser man in one sense to ultimately save reality. But now that rich moral complexity is erased, because apparently no adverse consequences would result from saving Gallifrey? It’s a beautiful, strong moral incentive to save Gallifrey to save the children who died, but I wish the 50th addressed the fact that the Time Lords had actually grown very evil and that much more was at stake than just Gallifreyans being defeated by Daleks. The fate of all reality was at stake.

>I admire Steven Moffat for trying a game-changing move for the next years of Doctor Who. I realize the Doctor can’t live in guilt forever. And I wouldn’t want him to. But the solution to dealing with the pain in one’s history isn’t a pop back in time to change those events from ever having happened. What has been beautiful about Doctor Who was the human growth and lessons that it taught. If the Doctor should be guiltless, let him learn to forgive himself or find solace in the hero he became because of his actions. Something we all can learn along with him. As opposed to the “let’s change our past so we don’t have to deal with the guilt” solution that no one in the viewership can apply to himself and learn from. I feel that the 50th gave the Doctor an over-simplified “Disney” solution to life’s core emotional problems. I loved the fact that there were consequences to hard moral decisions, I loved the complexity and serious depth of thought in the core of the RTD reboot, and especially RTD’s vision of the Time War and its meaning to the Doctor.

>I did actually enjoy watching the 50th, but its repercussions threaten to take a lot of depth out of Doctor Who. Moffat essentially removed the childhood of the reboot’s Doctor, the hard past from which all his characterization grows. He removed a defining trait of the reboot’s Doctor and offered nothing as inherently complex and defining in its place. I’ll still enjoy Doctor Who and track Capaldi’s adventures, but in my mind the Doctor Who universe shaped by Moffat lives in a completely parallel world to the rusty, balmy world that was created in 2005.

Good post. Who wrote it? I don't see it in the thread.

I remember when I first watched the 50th I was rooting so hard for them not to undo the Time War in the barn scene…yeah it was a great, exciting moment when they did, but I agree it's very shallow and even childish thematically, plumbing that more complex approach of RTD's into pure escapism disconnected from any actual meaning relevant to viewers. I lol at how RTD jokes about it though, with his shade about the Daleks shooting at each other. That said, two showrunners with such different views covering the same ground is always interesting and I kind of like that we got conflict there.
