I've done some thinking over the last few months and I've decided I wouldn't be against Jack coming back to the show, at any point. I know it would be a potential viewer grab and whatever, but I don't think Jack is one of the characters confined to his era - or at least he shouldn't be. He currently is, and that's a problem.

/who/ BOOK CLUB - SHIT TRIPS: VOLUME 2.5

DEEP LORE EDITION

=====

The full length story featured today is based on an epoch-making moment in Doctor Who history; the first ever female Doctor. Decades before Chibnall ever had the gumption to cast a blonde woman as the Doctor, pioneering fan films were already pushing the envelope (putting paid to any notion that a female Doctor is somehow a new idea). The result was the Seattle International Films series beginning with The Wrath of Eukor in 1984. Barbara Benedetti herself, as this rec.arts.drwho post reveals (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rec.arts.drwho/Y61DiDcOA5g), sadly passed away in 1991.

TODAY'S STORIES:

The Last Anti-Possibility Engine

What if the Barbara Benedetti Doctor, the blonde alternate Seventh Doctor from a 1980s fanseries, returned in prose form?

I honestly think Jack is the closest NewWho has to a Sarah Jane Classic figure in how…

*popular he is

*tied to a successful, loved period of the show he is

*how involved he is with spinoffs and EU continuity, yet how easy it would be to pluck him out of that and pop him into a new story with no need for continuity references

We'll see him back one day, even if only in a quick cameo scene in the 75th or something, imo. It's really not that long until the people who grew up on NewWho will be running the show.

Good idea to revisit this Doctor from what turned out to be a prescient fanseries in some ways (and even it didn’t, it was still a sparky, well-executed one). Not just a skit or reference either, this is a properly told story in its own right. Nice concepts around the namesake.

I know it'd never happen but I'd love in like 10 years a Torchwood series in name, with absolutely none of the Torchwood trappings (no returning cast members, no 21st century) with an older, possibly grey-haired, much aged Jack.

I would further suggest he could have been the NuWho Brigadier, if scheduling had worked out better during series 6. Right then it would have worked like a charm to bring him back, like he never left, but at this point it's been so long it would start to seem weird. Sorta like how there's a point at which the Doctor returning to meet Susan goes from being a charming catch-up to a serious event.

Yeah, you familiar with Stewart Lee? Really dug his new special a lot. An incidentally Doctor Who-related bit in there as well.

also watched that cannibal coming-of-age flick Raw, really really liked it. A very specific intersection of two subgenres I'm really into. great music as well.

been watching the new season of BCS of course, it's going strong so far but it remains to be seen if the show is quite as good without Chuck's actual presence. I'm still completely along for the ride though.

Plus I've been watching The Twilight Zone all the way through for the first time having only seen scattered episodes. It's fucking great stuff, and the blu ray rip I'm watching makes me wish that we could see 60s Doctor Who releases with that level of visual fidelity. I guess when the new line of blu rays cover that era we'll be closer to that.

And he manipulates everyone, even his companions, to save the day. Yeah, I guess you could say he's "morally grey" or something. It's like Rorschach, or Deadpool, or Rick from Rick and Morty. Pretty epic huh?

 No.87166

Check out this epic Seventh Doctor quote:

>"In the end, Pryce was right. There is no reason why one person should not kill another. No argument against murder stands up to scrutiny. For every religious prohibition saying, "Thou shalt not kill", there's another one that allows killing under certain special circumstances – sinners are fair game, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live", and so on. Moral codes are no better; they're just formalised opinions, without any logical backup. The sociological history of almost every race is riddled with examples of laws against murder standing beside legalized examples of murder, be they executions, wars or euthanasia. Ultimately, every single argument that we can come up with, stripped of its pretty words, boils down to a fundamental truth: we disagree with murder because we don't want to be murdered. No more and no less than that."

It's from the books of course. You wouldn't find anything like this in the TV series.

What am I looking at?

 No.87207

Okay, so it's pretty evident /who/ is shit now and almost every anon agrees. But I've found a solution. There are a few steps as to how we actually salvage this shithole.

>Rename /who/ to /dwg/ - Doctor Who General

It's clear to see that the /who/ name is now permanently associated with shitposting and memes. Bringing a new identity will stop this. I'm not saying get rid of the memes entirely, but perhaps make new memes more related to discussion topics.

>Stop all "meme" thread headers.

Instead, I suggest we focus them on discussion, posing them with a question or a talking point. Maybe we could have episode editions right from An Unearthly Child up until today. In addition, we could append this to thread headers to get newbies to follow our new etiquette.

>Make threads focused on Doctor Who.

/who/ should be about Doctor Who (/dwg/ moreso, another reason to change the name), and it should not be a personal blog for discussing your life, nor should it be a place to discuss Star Wars. There are many, many other places to talk about those things - the countless Star Wars threads on /tv/, and /soc/ for socializing.

>Remove all the trips.

Even if a few people filter the trips, there will still be a majority of people who see their posts and discuss them, making them a net loss for /dwg/. The best way would be to make them so uncomfortable that they have to leave. Yes, it might f*ck up a few threads in the process but it will be worth it in the long run to have a drama-free environment.

>Close down the stream.

All the stream does for this place is bring even more identity drama. I don't think you can make streams anonymous, so the best way to stop it would be to remove the association or the stream itself.

>Stop posting links to the wiki.

The wiki is another one of those things which is so closely associated with the /who/ identity that it's nothing but drama. Just remove the 4chan association and make it a separate thing that all the tripfags and memers can go to.

It was on the planet Skaro that my old enemy the Master was finally put on trial. They say he listened calmly as his list of evil was read and sentence passed. Then he made his last - and I thought somewhat curious - request. He demanded that I, the Doctor, a rival Time Lord, should take his remains back to our home planet, Gallifrey.

It was a request they should never have granted.

N8, mind reading "Last Antipossibility Engine" at some point this week? I'd love to have a review.

 No.87360

>>86830

So, to start off…

I'm not as up on the benedetti series as the other N-Trips. However, I don't need to be that up on it to get it, you're always so concise with your characters, Imm. Its kind of a 6 and Harry Sullivan series.

Your influences are on your sleeve: of course the faction paradox is there, and a wrinkle in time too. But there's something else too, a bit of Rowling influence: she loves to redefine her confrontations by holding what should be an exact moment back and tricking you into believing you just experienced the story's climax. Ive noticed you doing that in a story before, but i couldnt put my finger on it until now.

That said there's a wonderful amount of trickery here: the last engine destroyed there's a dual meaning of whether carl looked or not, isn't there? Thats a fun piece of lore, but i think if this truly was going to stand alone id prefer to imagine he just never looked. Personal preference, ties up more loose thread.

The only real criticism I'd add is that comparatively the doctor in the engine is far and away the most interesting part of the story. I know we have to find some way to get there but let's be honest: I can tell what you had the most fun writing. The rest rates between very good and an obligation to the story to include. Another draft to cook the pre-engine sections and to inject some enthusiasm would have helped. Maybe a bit more warmth earlier too, but id take an argument that the development towards a warmer character helps make the story more effective. Doesn't take away from how great the rest of the story is.

Finally, I think if you ever became a FP writer full time I would spin off Regtha. Just a personal preference but there's potential to the character. If n8 gets around to reading it i'm sure he'll agree. Otherwise it's a fantastic tale with an awesome idea.

I expect the worst they could do would be to put the Krotons on the cover and ruin the surprise.

Audio book implies one voice narrates a story. Audio drama is fully acted out, every character is voice. It's just like a show but without the visuals.

Do you think the magic space puddle returning would have worked better if the series established that bill was having a hard time getting over heather, rather than showing her having moved on and dating new people without baggage?

The BBC doesn't produce these, Big Finish does. These take no energy or resources away from the show. Without these, nothing about the show would change, it would not be better or have a higher budget or come out more frequently, we just wouldn't have the supplementary audio dramas. Also, they're really good most of the time.

 No.87437

>>87428

The tragedy of the ponds is not that they died, but that they were separated from the doctor. It's bittersweet because they still got to live out their lives, but the doctor lost his closest friends

The tragedy of clara is not that she died, but that she had to part ways with the doctor. Clara getting to have a tardis doesn't invalidate the tragedy, because the tragedy is around the doctor having to forget her in order to let her go (and then, after remembering by seeing her portrait on the tardis, having the self restraint to not go looking for her)

The tragedy of river is that the doctor finally arrived at the last time he saw her before she died, but it’s bittersweet because the doctor proved his love for her and they got to spend 24 years together as a domestic married couple

The tragedy of bill is that she was turned into a cyberman, but it’s bittersweet because even though she does die, some form of her consciousness gets to live on with the girl she liked

The tragedy of nardole is that he died in a futile but selfless effort to try and save some people from the inevitable cyberman attack.

The tragedy of missy is that she actually turned good, but the master killed her before she could go back to help the doctor - so the doctor never found out he had gotten through to her, and believed he had failed

The tragedy of 12 is that he got to fulfil his mantra of ‘without hope, without witness, without reward’

if labor are smart they'll campaign on this, it's an easy social issue to position themselves as better than the libs and with some competent persuasion they could establish a narrative that libs are anti-gay in general regardless of the fact they were in power when gay marriage became legal

Especially given that scomo voted no in the postal vote, and abstained in parliament because he had religious convictions to not support it

labor probably don't even need to be smart to win the next election though tbqh, but it potentially depends on in the next 6 months how well scomo makes people forget about the dramas of the spill. I'm not holding my breath

The mere existence of the referendum is damning, not any source of glorification. The Libs gleefully dodge any of the actual business or responsibility of governing a nation any chance they get. It's like democracy in reverse, utter deflection. I'm amused at how the daggy positioning of ScoMo is already slipping, but there's potentially a fair bit of time for the propaganda machine to keep propping him up. I do think the ALP will win though.

if they hadn't done the plebiscite and instead kept it in parliament in which event it would have inevitably gone through, they would have disenfranchised a notable quantity of their voters and lost them to meme parties in the next election. It was pure politicking, malc was trapped with two options that were 'bad' for different reasons.

Around 40% of the public voted no - what percentage of the lib voterbase made up that 40%? How would they have responded at the next election if the party they voted in had done something they objected to, without giving them a chance to vocalise their (futile) disagreement?
