I got a pic from the new series. what do you think?

It's almost as if Clara was an English teacher, quoting a very famous poem that she of all people should know off by heart.

No, but fictional characters have oft been known to. Naturalism is not the sole or even the primary mode of fiction.

hence the notion that moff writes in poetry rather than natural interactions

I do think Moffat goes a little too far sometimes with that stuff. Maybe not as much as most of the people complaining, but that's my preference. I also dont like full naturalism in TV either though, with all it's interruptions, and people getting distracted

WEAT/TDF is a shakespearian tragedy

I like the poetry

Midnight is a Shakespearean tragedy complete with continuity of space and continuity of time

Naturalism sucks. Now Hannibal, that's a show with good dialogue.

The Beast Below is a Shakespearean tragedy complete with continuity of space and continuity of time

really enjoyed Countrycide, Ianto breaking down halfway through the story was great.I really do not like Gwen cheating on Rhys especially with Owen of all people. Jack got more of a darker side in this story which was great but I know it won't really go full force into that aspect for a few seasons.

that's fair though, we all have preferences.

>EDAs > VNAs >> Big Finish's work programme for unemployed former actors

Do you agree with this /who/?

In terms of quality? Influence on the parent show? Right to exist?

Did you like hearing Jack's theme for the first time in the show when he burst through the house on the ruddy great tractor?

Did you like the parallel between the cannibals and Gwen/Owen (doing self-destructive fucked up things because it 'made them happy')?

It's my favourite Chibnall DW/TW episode, although he has a TW S2 one that I concede is better.

You ask me what I mean

by saying I have lost my tongue.

I ask you, what would you do

if you had two tongues in your mouth,

and lost the first one,

the mother tongue,

and could not really know the other,

the foreign tongue.

You could not use them both together

even if you thought that way.

And if you lived in a place you had to

speak a foreign tongue,

your mother tongue would rot,

rot and die in your mouth

until you had to spit it out.

I thought I spit it out

but overnight while I dream,

(munay hutoo kay aakhee jeebh aakhee bhasha)

(may thoonky nakhi chay)

(parantoo rattray svupnama mari bhasha pachi aavay chay)

(foolnee jaim mari bhasha nmari jeebh)

(modhama kheelay chay)

(fullnee jaim mari bhasha mari jeebh)

(modhama pakay chay)

it grows back, a stump of a shoot

grows longer, grows moist, grows strong veins,

it ties the other tongue in knots,

the bud opens, the bud opens in my mouth,

it pushes the other tongue aside.

Everytime I think I've forgotten,

I think I've lost the mother tongue,

it blossoms out of my mouth.

>VNAs not last

The CIA stance is what really gets me the most about it, it makes the smug pepe so much more smug

Anyone else not that hot on going back to 4ch? I get why we'll do it and I support theoretically getting some good new blood there but I'm not looking forward to it. I like it here.

I don't get what will happen. Will there be simultaneous threads here and over there?

yep, it will be difficult reestablishing ourselves as a general amongst the boardie hordes. but ultimately necessary for /who/'s survival

I thought you actually really wanted to go back there?

VNAs: soul

EDAs: soulless

>Implying most of us don't post over there already

>it will be difficult reestablishing ourselves as a general amongst the boardie hordes

Paradoxically, I think boardies running rampant in the thread will strengthen the general's presence by a) keeping it bumped and b) forcing threads to be made more frequently. It won't be long before everyone gets used to it being back.

as someone who does post on 4chan regularly i can assure you that the majority of /who/res don't, and they are probably better off for it

particularly given the nature of the next season, I expect the 4ch threads will at least at first be exceptionally shitposty and boardie-ridden. It'll possibly die down but there's no way to know for sure, for all we know every week will create a new /pol/-bait webm

And /tv/ is undoubtedly one of the worst boards on all of 4chan.

Yes, though I imagine the threads here will slow down a lot. Things will fluctuate depending how bad things are on 4chan - I don't just mean boardies and stuff too, I mean regulation by external janitors, constant captchas, shorter threads, having to keep all posts directly about DW, etc. Maybe those things will end up feeling inconsequential but I suspect they're creature comforts we really have grown accustomed to, for good reason. I'm pretty fascinated by what will happen honestly. I'm gonna stake out 4ch and post there a bit but will definitely be keeping one foot firmly back here and I ultimately do consider 8chan "home" more than 4chan, for me and for my conception of /who/, as of now. We'll see what shakes out.

My prediction is, whether the janitors allow /who/ to stay on 4chan in the offseason or not (I highly doubt it, but it is possible, even then I doubt we'll take them up on the offer), we'll be fairly active on 4chan in show onseasons, get some new blood as we go (survival and all that as you say) but keep 8chan as the effective homebase and where we congregrate in the offseasons. Just a prediction.

I post on 4chan but less than I post here on 8chan's DW board, and I don't post on 4chan at all for Doctor Who stuff. Why on earth would I want to, it's a hellscape.

A few months ago I did but I've actually pretty much completely flipped views by now. Back in the Discord debates I maintained that wherever we camped out would fundamentally change /who/, and 8chan did, but I actually think it was for the better.

I could potentially even see 4chan /who/ being more the shitposting hub and people keeping their longer posts/takes later in the week back to here on 8ch. Whatever happens will happen organically; I don't think we should force anything one way or the other. Just see what feels right.

I think it's reasonable to expect that discussion of some form will stay active here

I'll still post more here than there honestly. But I will be there of course.

If by soul you mean edge

> I'm gonna stake out 4ch and post there a bit but will definitely be keeping one foot firmly back here and I ultimately do consider 8chan "home" more than 4chan, for me and for my conception of /who/, as of now.

Of course you do, you're a tripfag.

>4chan /who/ being more the shitposting hub

I mean, that's my plan. To be as shitposty as possible and get banned often.

The EDAs were literally created because a huge corporation didn't like what the independent artists behind the VNAs were producing and wanted to bring it more in line with their Brand™. They may have developed some positive features of their own thanks to Loz, but there is absolutely no arguing that they have less soul overall than the VNAs.

How's that any different from your usual posts?

If he gets Nabil Shaban back to play Sil again that will be legitimate kino.

"Murdered by my father" is on vimeo in very high quality.

Anyone interested in watching it in an hour or so?

It's written by Vinay Patel, one of the new authors brought by Chibs to work on S11.

I really like it because in its attempts to find anything to do, it manages to recreate a much older kind of science fiction, where you could only afford one effects shot in your big SF movie so you had to fill up the rest of the time with serious actors having serious drama about very specific material concerns. The doctors are trying to reason out the implications of the Miracle while on the plane they have to MacGuyver an antidote to Jack's poison.

It was a surprising throwback, but a welcome one.

I'm interested.

Doctor Who isn’t “about” time travel. The time travel is just how the doctor gets from one story to the next. He might as well clap his hands together and open a portal.

Science fiction is speculative fiction set somewhere on the outer edges of plausibility. It's not necessarily what would happen if boring science equation. Sometimes it's what would happen if there was a big scary alien.

The magic wand is a purely NuPu element. The sonic screwdriver is supposed to be a piece of technology primarily to unlock things. Regeneration exists in nature it's just exaggerated for storytelling purposes i.e. sci-fi.

Yes. Literally this. Star Trek does it every episode.

I think the "Is Doctor Who sci-fi" debate does more to expose the unhelpfulness of the sci-fi/fantasy dichotomy than it tells us anything helpful about Doctor Who.

A word has an objective, unshakeable meaning some people grasp and others don't. It's certainly not a negotiation of terms. There's no general alignment of used meanings. It comes from outside, from beyond. It is pure and immutable. Your definition isn't just more correct than others, it is the definition, and the others are wronger than they will ever understand. That's what makes the exchange so productive. It blew into this world on a leaf and you're the only one who saw it.

Did I mention how much I hate sci-fi…? I'm fairly sure I did, but what bothers me is how often I have to say it. For the most part, this is because it's much easier to be irritated by sci-fi fans than it used to be. There was a time when these people would (quite rightly) be routinely dismissed as the petty, insular, self-obsessed tedium-engines they really are, but now they've somehow managed to acquire a media-voice of their own. Just five years ago, it would have been unthinkable for anyone who believed that Babylon 5 was the height of dramatic sophistication - or, in modern-day terms, anyone who actually thinks that Heroes is a serious television programme - to have made themselves heard beyond the pages of SFX, yet now these people are somehow managing to get their point across as if… well, as if they had intelligent opinions of some description. Perhaps what I find most objectionable about this is that they keep trying to drag Doctor Who into things, although on the plus side, at least nerd-scum only like the really rubbish episodes of Doctor Who which are "dark" and "cult" instead of the interesting funny ones.

Hipster nerds. Idk really I haven't seen alot of it as it didn't get much if any play over here. You'd see it at nerd house parties on a bootleg VHS that sort of thing with other random sci fi shit from abroad, that or skateboarding videos and emmanuelle . What I've seen of it I enjoyed. I like that cheesy early 80s scifi seemingly low production value stuff, like the original battlestar.

>E.g. when they defend lack of basic continuity or writers literally trolling fans in-universe.

In all honesty, do these things really bother you? I guess I enjoy the show a lot, but dont take it seriously enough to worry about continuity errors, and tbqh I find it kinda funny when the writers troll the fans in some way.

Is it really damaging to the show? Could you expand on that? I'm not attacking you btw, but you seem to be annoyed at exactly the sort of fan that i am

He followed this statement up with "Cha ching!"

I too wish for intense sexual intercourse with Naoko Mori. Grig is a man with good tastes.

Let's take one episode that is generally liked here as an example: Hell Bent. In which there is no explanation for Gallifrey's return other than "the Time Lords must have gotten themselves out" of the pocket universe despite it being FROZEN IN TIME, in which it is suggested that the Doctor is half-human just to piss off fans who hate that idea and of course "Clara Who?" and everything that happens to what Moffat had to know was a much-hated character in the fandom.

what did gig mean by this

In Vortex magazine, it is revealed that Torchwood: God Among Us Vol. 2 will introduce a new TW Team member (at RTD’s request) and feature a submarine.

Okay, I think the biggest difference between our viewpoints is in what we look for in the show. I'll respond to some of your points individually.

> there is no explanation for Gallifrey's return other than "the Time Lords must have gotten themselves out" of the pocket universe

So the Time Lords were already able to get out, in fact they already had a way out in Trenzalore, but it would have started a war. They avoided starting a war by returning quietly at the end of the universe where they wouldnt be noticed. This is arguably not a satisfying explanation, but they returned presumably the same way they were returning in Time of the Doctor. Regardless of all that, I really dont think it's a big deal. I care more about seeing where the Doctor and Clara's whole "thrill-seeker adrenaline junky" thing was going, and what was happening with her death. I think that's what Moffat cared about too. so I can see why if you were very invested in the Gallifrey returning arc, you wouldn't be happy. I just wasn't invested in that from the start.

>it is suggested that the Doctor is half-human just to piss off fans who hate that idea

To be fair it's only suggested, and I thought it was pretty funny to mess with people's heads like that. It's like when the new series came back, people on Outpost Gallifrey complained that the Tardis was nothing like a police box, and in Blink, the police officer tells Sally "The windows are too big for it to be a real police box". Moffat has a sense of humour about this stuff, so him poking fun at the half human thing, is kinda funny to me. I like showrunner who can have a bit of banter like that.

>what Moffat had to know was a much-hated character in the fandom.

I hate it when creators pander to their audience instead of just making their best work. Often I felt Moffat was guilty of pandering, making the show more "timey wimey" because he thought audiences wanted that. This is one case where he stuck to his guns instead of pandering, and I really appreciate that. I felt Clara's ending wasn't done perfectly, but it was a good enough culmination of her arc.

I feel that where we fundamentally disagree, is that you are taking the show and it's universe quite seriously and on it's own terms, whereas I've become detached over the years, and maybe take it all as a joke. I dont think there's anything wrong with either of our perspectives though desu.

What if he was bi?

>He's not even playing a character, he's literally playing himself

b-b-but Morph was woman

I was annoyed by the lack of explanation in The Time of the Doctor too but assumed it would come eventually. But Hell Bent, the episode were Gallifrey actually returns, needed to provide at least a halfway decent explanation for me and it was the episode that introduced the idea of UNFREEZING YOURSELF FROM TIME. Instead it was turned into a lame joke, a middle-finger to the audience for actually caring about the resolution to a decade-long story arc. And God knows Chibnall won't provide an explanation and even if he does it'll be too late and an obvious retcon. I don't see why we couldn't have gotten even a sentence or two as well as a resolution to the Doctor/Clara relationship (which was also appalling IMO). And what about those who liked Clara's end in Face the Raven?

I used to like Moffat's meta-humour about poking fun of the show in-universe. Now I just think it exposes the show's weak points and ruins the escapism just for cheap jokes.

I don't think Moffat stuck to his guns with Clara. I think the backlash to her from traditional fans made him go FURTHER with her. I genuinely think there's a self-hating part of him. He gets off on mocking what he sees as his younger nerdier more uptight self.

And don't think that I'm humourless or want the show to be rated 15 or something. Doctor Who at it's best is the funniest non-comedy on TV and should always be somewhat child-friendly..

>And don't think that I'm humourless or want the show to be rated 15 or something. Doctor Who at it's best is the funniest non-comedy on TV and should always be somewhat child-friendly..

Sorry, when I say you take the show more seriously, I don't mean in an edgy humourless serious way, I think I wasn't clear with my wording. What I mean is, I think I kinda think of the show as a joke a little bit, so when stuff is inconsistent, it doesn't really bother me. Whereas you are taking it seriously, in that you are engaging with it a little more deeply, and considering the universe of the show in a way that I often dont bother. But yeah, I get what you mean.

Genghis Khan was an absolute chad

come on… Doctor Who is meant to be a show free from the real world which can I add (women are not treated un-equally any more, look at exam results, prison sentences and coverage in mental health to see that),but even so, Why bring it into this. It’s meant to be about watching a show where no matter where you are from you can learn a fun take on history, the past and future and just smile. I know this writing is rubbish but I’m tired rn and just saw this. Your new trailer has put a shame to the show and it’s disgusting. You’ve practically said males are useless at playing the doctor and Jodie is the start of the “good” doctors. All I can say is no, just no. Shame on you Chris for what you have done to the show before it even started. Watch Doctor Who and you’ll see a male can perfectly play the role and there was no glass wall preventing the doctor being female, the MASTER was female. Even in the 6th Doctors run t was suggested a time lord can change gender in an off line. It’s not a new thing that is “amazing and political”, get over the past. Write good scripts that are not advertising feminism, I’ll turn the news on for that. Just step down if you aren’t capable of that. Please, if not for your reputation do it for the show.

NPC's are real

The tendency to interpret this article as proof that other people are mindless, subhuman zombies, is 100% characteristic of inceldom.

I think "people who don't experience inner thought are mindless and have no critical thought skills" is an extrapolation too far, but it's definitely within reason that some amount of the population are like that - just not 75%

Nice try NPC

Not really, no. Speaking from a designer perspective, it's reminiscent of the era of Saturday morning cartoons, where everything was a bit more experimental and cartoons were throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks… which sounds right up Doctor Who's alley so good job I guess on the logo creator's part?

Really it just reminds me of the Skeleton Warriors logo.

still waiting for my cheque, Russia

Doctor Who - scheggetaglienti - WordPress.com

From this blog:

Started with the clumsy attempt to imitate the formula of the previous showrunner Russell T. Davies, the last season of Doctor Who's Moffat era continued with a compelling series of poor copies of previous episodes, which attempted to reproduce the letter, failing miserably in grasping the spirit.

Unfortunately, the worst failure was to bring back the Master of John Simm completely canceling the complexity and humanity, to reduce it to a kind of dull and irritable shoulder for the unbearable birignao Missy, and defrauding the stupendous output of The End of Time.

Twelve's self-congratulatory pippone about how kindly he was to sacrifice himself for the settlers on the ship then showed how Moffat does not understand the difference between writing A character, and writing FOR a character.

True, the Doctor helps others by kindness and sense of justice, but it is a different thing to make him proclaim aloud.

It is as if Gino Strada began to say of himself "Look at me, I could make billions with plastic surgery, and instead I'm at the front to sew the panza to the beggars, I AM A HOLY!"

The season ended with the replica of Clara's happy ending for Bill, Twelve's imitation of the iconic goodbye of Ten, and the disturbing announcement that in his last episode, the Christmas special, Moffat will try again to enter the past history of the series to rewrite it - and ruin it - in its image.

Excluding the excesses from the final series, The End of Time is one of the best episodes of Doctor Who, and one of Russell T. Davies' most political lyrics.

The End of Time tells us explicitly that our birds of prey and war-breakers ruling classes who are leading the world to ruin must be swept away, without ifs and buts.

It is about our survival or theirs.

A revolutionary message in the literal sense of the term, which Moffat has obviously struggled to try to cancel, first with the retina of The Day of the Doctor, who shamelessly asserts the opposite imperative to preserve at all costs those same rapacious ruling classes and warmongers.

Then with The Time of the Doctor, in which his Eleven inflicts on the inhabitants of Trenzalore a thousand-year war that could have avoided him completely simply by going away, and is rewarded for this with a new cycle of regeneration by raptors and warmongers Time Lords who has preserved .

And finally, with the unworthy pantomime of Hell Bent, in which his Rassilon, inexplicably oblivious of his iron determination to destroy the universe in order to retain power until the end, suddenly reveals himself willing to immediately surrender to courtesy.

Because Moffat is keen to make us believe that the dictators at Erdogan are basically just a little gruffy old men, like the clones of Scrooge who regularly infest every Christmas special.

Once again there is a Zenith, The End of Time, and a Nadir, Moffat's Gallifreyana trilogy.

However, his time is expiring.

We hope to finally come back to decent scripts.

The Doctor Who's RTD era is full of Gnostic references. From The Parting of the Ways to Gridlock, from Human Nature / Family of Blood to Turn Left, from Utopia to The End of Time. The Doctor of Russell T. Davies is the Gnostic Christ who opposes the Demiurge, represented in Lord Rassilon's The End of Time.

The Doctor of RTD fights the Authority, always portrayed as cruel and corrupt.

Even the Moffat era is full of (more coarse) esoteric references, but the Doctor of Steven Moffat does not fight the Authority, he embodies it. And claims obedience: "Do as you're told!"

In the Moffat era, the Authority is always represented as worthy and indispensable.

If RTD also satirizes Obama, Moffat even sympathizes with Nixon.

The Doctor of Moffat shapes the universe by rewriting it and falsifying it continuously at will. "Rule one: the Doctor lies".

The Doctor of Moffat does not oppose the Demiurge.

It is the Demiurge.

Doctor Who is inherently political. It supposes that the scientifically minded, enlightened man, has the right to impose his moral values on the savages.

Is World War Three the most political episode of new who? Politicians making the earth uninhabitable in order to make profit.

People are following along with the marathon who haven't seen Torchwood before; please be more considerate with spoilers.

surely they were spoiled by the S4 finale then?

adric dies

I am asking you to please be considerate. This is not a big ask.

Not comparable. Maybe if you knew there was a group watching the fifth doctor and some of them for the first.

I'll be able to attend in 4 hours, no earlier

your point is reasonable but I find it hard to believe that someone could be completely unaware of something that was explicitly mentioned in doctor who. I haven't ever watched torchwood the whole way through but I know of that factoid because gwen mentions it in the S4 finale.

I can't delete the post because the password thing has reset

4 hours sounds great to me.

I understand you can personally find it hard to believe but no one is trying to really contest anything here or make a debate about it, just a minor heads-up that given /who/'s been running a marathon of a show with some big spoilers and there's more than one person watching who hasn't seen the show before, it'd be very appreciated to be a bit more cautious about posting those spoilers, regardless of how non-spoilery or well-known they might seem to most users. No worries about the deletion, just a heads up for future.

It genuinely was. Williams acted like a total fucking child and should be ashamed

It's shameful what normies did to peter capaldi

Most, if not all, of series 1 is. The Long Game - Bad Wolf - Parting of the Ways is arguably a more political story though imo.

The Long Game is incredibly underrated

woah dae the long game predicted fake news :O

nilsos heterosexuality dies

If series 1 is so political then why do boardies like it so much when they claim to hate politics in tv.

…I don't know? I'm not a boardie, I'm not sure why you're asking me. Are you disagreeing that it's a series with explicit political undertones or questioning boardies' approach to it?

they were little babbies when series 1 aired and didn't notice the political messages

because the political messages aren't hostile, provocative or based in identity politics

good political messages are all three!

how do you expect to change someone's views if you're being hostile towards them? They'll just get defensive and dismiss you out of principle as a natural psychological response

a political message does not need to change someone's pre-existing views to be good. it can present new views

What's the point of presenting new views if you're doing it in a way that prevents them from being receptive to them?

The kind of people that get upset at gay people being in media aren’t going to change their mind so it’s not worth wasting time on them.

People don't mind gay people in the show but it's when they remind you they are gay every episode by literally saying 'I like women' or 'I'm gay' then it becomes annoying as fuck

People who are upset at flamboyant and overtly sexual gay representation might be less bothered by a character who largely acts 'normal' but happens to have a boyfriend

if someone can't accept a good point presented in a "hostile" manner than that's on them. some injustices deserve to be protested with hostility

If people wanted to watch stuff about flamboyant gays then they would seek those type of shows, not a children's sci-fi series.

If you want a show without them then seek it out and stop complaining

Nothing "deserves" anything, the world doesn't work that way. If you have a message, you present it in the way that would be most effective towards the people you are trying to influence. To do anything else is self righteous idiocy.

File: 3a34cf8d213214f⋯.jpg (9.92 KB, 194x259, 194:259, images.jpg)

>Nothing "deserves" anything, the world doesn't work that way.

okay, this is political nihilism

I'm not bothered, but all you have to do is look at the tumbling ratings to see that people don't want this type of forced SJW garbage any more, especially when it's at the expense of story. Dr Who will be cancelled within 2-3 years anyway.

Who decides the objective rules for what deserves what?

reminder that american civil rights protesters never had the support of the people. neither did suffragettes. hostility is effective because it threatens those in power and forces them to make changes.

Note how hostility in that context was effective in conveying a message to the people they were trying to influence. Not everything works that way.

me. and i've decided that you are a massive twat who deserves hostility

What makes your rules more valid than mine?

This is unrelated but politicians should live in fear of the people attacking them for not serving the people.

well as i just said i'm the guy who decides the objective rules for what deserves what. so obviously my rules are more valid than your subjective ones

that's exactly why hostility can work on politicians. Hostility on civilians by civilians doesn't produce the same result because the power dynamic is fundamentally different.

Wednesday for Beginners is great. Jack and Jackie perfectly in character. You can tell Goss loved this era.
