It's my favourite Chibnall DW/TW episode, although he has a TW S2 one that I concede is better.

You ask me what I mean

by saying I have lost my tongue.

I ask you, what would you do

if you had two tongues in your mouth,

and lost the first one,

the mother tongue,

and could not really know the other,

the foreign tongue.

You could not use them both together

even if you thought that way.

And if you lived in a place you had to

speak a foreign tongue,

your mother tongue would rot,

rot and die in your mouth

until you had to spit it out.

I thought I spit it out

but overnight while I dream,

(munay hutoo kay aakhee jeebh aakhee bhasha)

(may thoonky nakhi chay)

(parantoo rattray svupnama mari bhasha pachi aavay chay)

(foolnee jaim mari bhasha nmari jeebh)

(modhama kheelay chay)

(fullnee jaim mari bhasha mari jeebh)

(modhama pakay chay)

it grows back, a stump of a shoot

grows longer, grows moist, grows strong veins,

it ties the other tongue in knots,

the bud opens, the bud opens in my mouth,

it pushes the other tongue aside.

Everytime I think I've forgotten,

I think I've lost the mother tongue,

it blossoms out of my mouth.

Paradoxically, I think boardies running rampant in the thread will strengthen the general's presence by a) keeping it bumped and b) forcing threads to be made more frequently. It won't be long before everyone gets used to it being back.

 No.91228

as someone who does post on 4chan regularly i can assure you that the majority of /who/res don't, and they are probably better off for it

 No.91229

>>91221

particularly given the nature of the next season, I expect the 4ch threads will at least at first be exceptionally shitposty and boardie-ridden. It'll possibly die down but there's no way to know for sure, for all we know every week will create a new /pol/-bait webm

 No.91230

>>91229

And /tv/ is undoubtedly one of the worst boards on all of 4chan.

 No.91231

>>91222

Yes, though I imagine the threads here will slow down a lot. Things will fluctuate depending how bad things are on 4chan - I don't just mean boardies and stuff too, I mean regulation by external janitors, constant captchas, shorter threads, having to keep all posts directly about DW, etc. Maybe those things will end up feeling inconsequential but I suspect they're creature comforts we really have grown accustomed to, for good reason. I'm pretty fascinated by what will happen honestly. I'm gonna stake out 4ch and post there a bit but will definitely be keeping one foot firmly back here and I ultimately do consider 8chan "home" more than 4chan, for me and for my conception of /who/, as of now. We'll see what shakes out.

>>91223

My prediction is, whether the janitors allow /who/ to stay on 4chan in the offseason or not (I highly doubt it, but it is possible, even then I doubt we'll take them up on the offer), we'll be fairly active on 4chan in show onseasons, get some new blood as we go (survival and all that as you say) but keep 8chan as the effective homebase and where we congregrate in the offseasons. Just a prediction.

>>91226

I post on 4chan but less than I post here on 8chan's DW board, and I don't post on 4chan at all for Doctor Who stuff. Why on earth would I want to, it's a hellscape.

>>91224

A few months ago I did but I've actually pretty much completely flipped views by now. Back in the Discord debates I maintained that wherever we camped out would fundamentally change /who/, and 8chan did, but I actually think it was for the better.

>>91229

I could potentially even see 4chan /who/ being more the shitposting hub and people keeping their longer posts/takes later in the week back to here on 8ch. Whatever happens will happen organically; I don't think we should force anything one way or the other. Just see what feels right.

 No.91232

I think it's reasonable to expect that discussion of some form will stay active here

I really like it because in its attempts to find anything to do, it manages to recreate a much older kind of science fiction, where you could only afford one effects shot in your big SF movie so you had to fill up the rest of the time with serious actors having serious drama about very specific material concerns. The doctors are trying to reason out the implications of the Miracle while on the plane they have to MacGuyver an antidote to Jack's poison.

It was a surprising throwback, but a welcome one.

A word has an objective, unshakeable meaning some people grasp and others don't. It's certainly not a negotiation of terms. There's no general alignment of used meanings. It comes from outside, from beyond. It is pure and immutable. Your definition isn't just more correct than others, it is the definition, and the others are wronger than they will ever understand. That's what makes the exchange so productive. It blew into this world on a leaf and you're the only one who saw it.

 No.91411

Did I mention how much I hate sci-fi…? I'm fairly sure I did, but what bothers me is how often I have to say it. For the most part, this is because it's much easier to be irritated by sci-fi fans than it used to be. There was a time when these people would (quite rightly) be routinely dismissed as the petty, insular, self-obsessed tedium-engines they really are, but now they've somehow managed to acquire a media-voice of their own. Just five years ago, it would have been unthinkable for anyone who believed that Babylon 5 was the height of dramatic sophistication - or, in modern-day terms, anyone who actually thinks that Heroes is a serious television programme - to have made themselves heard beyond the pages of SFX, yet now these people are somehow managing to get their point across as if… well, as if they had intelligent opinions of some description. Perhaps what I find most objectionable about this is that they keep trying to drag Doctor Who into things, although on the plus side, at least nerd-scum only like the really rubbish episodes of Doctor Who which are "dark" and "cult" instead of the interesting funny ones.

Let's take one episode that is generally liked here as an example: Hell Bent. In which there is no explanation for Gallifrey's return other than "the Time Lords must have gotten themselves out" of the pocket universe despite it being FROZEN IN TIME, in which it is suggested that the Doctor is half-human just to piss off fans who hate that idea and of course "Clara Who?" and everything that happens to what Moffat had to know was a much-hated character in the fandom.

 No.91492

>>91489

Okay, I think the biggest difference between our viewpoints is in what we look for in the show. I'll respond to some of your points individually.

> there is no explanation for Gallifrey's return other than "the Time Lords must have gotten themselves out" of the pocket universe

So the Time Lords were already able to get out, in fact they already had a way out in Trenzalore, but it would have started a war. They avoided starting a war by returning quietly at the end of the universe where they wouldnt be noticed. This is arguably not a satisfying explanation, but they returned presumably the same way they were returning in Time of the Doctor. Regardless of all that, I really dont think it's a big deal. I care more about seeing where the Doctor and Clara's whole "thrill-seeker adrenaline junky" thing was going, and what was happening with her death. I think that's what Moffat cared about too. so I can see why if you were very invested in the Gallifrey returning arc, you wouldn't be happy. I just wasn't invested in that from the start.

>it is suggested that the Doctor is half-human just to piss off fans who hate that idea

To be fair it's only suggested, and I thought it was pretty funny to mess with people's heads like that. It's like when the new series came back, people on Outpost Gallifrey complained that the Tardis was nothing like a police box, and in Blink, the police officer tells Sally "The windows are too big for it to be a real police box". Moffat has a sense of humour about this stuff, so him poking fun at the half human thing, is kinda funny to me. I like showrunner who can have a bit of banter like that.

>what Moffat had to know was a much-hated character in the fandom.

I hate it when creators pander to their audience instead of just making their best work. Often I felt Moffat was guilty of pandering, making the show more "timey wimey" because he thought audiences wanted that. This is one case where he stuck to his guns instead of pandering, and I really appreciate that. I felt Clara's ending wasn't done perfectly, but it was a good enough culmination of her arc.

I feel that where we fundamentally disagree, is that you are taking the show and it's universe quite seriously and on it's own terms, whereas I've become detached over the years, and maybe take it all as a joke. I dont think there's anything wrong with either of our perspectives though desu.

I was annoyed by the lack of explanation in The Time of the Doctor too but assumed it would come eventually. But Hell Bent, the episode were Gallifrey actually returns, needed to provide at least a halfway decent explanation for me and it was the episode that introduced the idea of UNFREEZING YOURSELF FROM TIME. Instead it was turned into a lame joke, a middle-finger to the audience for actually caring about the resolution to a decade-long story arc. And God knows Chibnall won't provide an explanation and even if he does it'll be too late and an obvious retcon. I don't see why we couldn't have gotten even a sentence or two as well as a resolution to the Doctor/Clara relationship (which was also appalling IMO). And what about those who liked Clara's end in Face the Raven?

I used to like Moffat's meta-humour about poking fun of the show in-universe. Now I just think it exposes the show's weak points and ruins the escapism just for cheap jokes.

I don't think Moffat stuck to his guns with Clara. I think the backlash to her from traditional fans made him go FURTHER with her. I genuinely think there's a self-hating part of him. He gets off on mocking what he sees as his younger nerdier more uptight self.

And don't think that I'm humourless or want the show to be rated 15 or something. Doctor Who at it's best is the funniest non-comedy on TV and should always be somewhat child-friendly..

Sorry, when I say you take the show more seriously, I don't mean in an edgy humourless serious way, I think I wasn't clear with my wording. What I mean is, I think I kinda think of the show as a joke a little bit, so when stuff is inconsistent, it doesn't really bother me. Whereas you are taking it seriously, in that you are engaging with it a little more deeply, and considering the universe of the show in a way that I often dont bother. [Autopsy room]

OWEN: So, I'm trying to interpret the results of the bio-scan. Yeah, but it's just a mess, like there's no definitive readings. Because everything in her body keeps changing, nothing stays constant. So as soon as you think you've got something clear, the metabolic rate, the blood pressure, whatever, it all goes wild again.

JACK: Because she's fighting the alien for control of her own body.

OWEN: Yeah. So anyway, I decided to do a comparative diagnostic. Recreate the circumstances, accelerate the process a little, see what's gonna happen to Carys.

GWEN: Yeah, thanks.

OWEN: I infected the rat with a combination of the Vorax and the Suranium gas traces we found at the crash site and the nightclub.

TOSH: Looks fine so far.

OWEN: Once the gases start to flow round the body, the party really starts. The heart rate triples. The brain swells, pressing against the skull. As that keeps going, the lungs began to shrink, making it impossible to breathe. The pressure increases on all the internal organs until

(The rat goes Splat.)

OWEN: Hashtag 'rat jam'.

JACK: That's what's gonna happen to Carys?

GWEN: I'm losing, that's what she said to me.

come on… Doctor Who is meant to be a show free from the real world which can I add (women are not treated un-equally any more, look at exam results, prison sentences and coverage in mental health to see that),but even so, Why bring it into this. It’s meant to be about watching a show where no matter where you are from you can learn a fun take on history, the past and future and just smile. I know this writing is rubbish but I’m tired rn and just saw this. Your new trailer has put a shame to the show and it’s disgusting. You’ve practically said males are useless at playing the doctor and Jodie is the start of the “good” doctors. All I can say is no, just no. Shame on you Chris for what you have done to the show before it even started. Watch Doctor Who and you’ll see a male can perfectly play the role and there was no glass wall preventing the doctor being female, the MASTER was female. Even in the 6th Doctors run t was suggested a time lord can change gender in an off line. It’s not a new thing that is “amazing and political”, get over the past. Write good scripts that are not advertising feminism, I’ll turn the news on for that. Just step down if you aren’t capable of that. Please, if not for your reputation do it for the show.

Doctor Who - scheggetaglienti - WordPress.com

From this blog:

THE DOCTOR FAILS

Started with the clumsy attempt to imitate the formula of the previous showrunner Russell T. Davies, the last season of Doctor Who's Moffat era continued with a compelling series of poor copies of previous episodes, which attempted to reproduce the letter, failing miserably in grasping the spirit.

Unfortunately, the worst failure was to bring back the Master of John Simm completely canceling the complexity and humanity, to reduce it to a kind of dull and irritable shoulder for the unbearable birignao Missy, and defrauding the stupendous output of The End of Time.

Twelve's self-congratulatory pippone about how kindly he was to sacrifice himself for the settlers on the ship then showed how Moffat does not understand the difference between writing A character, and writing FOR a character.

True, the Doctor helps others by kindness and sense of justice, but it is a different thing to make him proclaim aloud.

It is as if Gino Strada began to say of himself "Look at me, I could make billions with plastic surgery, and instead I'm at the front to sew the panza to the beggars, I AM A HOLY!"

The season ended with the replica of Clara's happy ending for Bill, Twelve's imitation of the iconic goodbye of Ten, and the disturbing announcement that in his last episode, the Christmas special, Moffat will try again to enter the past history of the series to rewrite it - and ruin it - in its image.

THE END OF TIME

Excluding the excesses from the final series, The End of Time is one of the best episodes of Doctor Who, and one of Russell T. Davies' most political lyrics.

The End of Time tells us explicitly that our birds of prey and war-breakers ruling classes who are leading the world to ruin must be swept away, without ifs and buts.

It is about our survival or theirs.

A revolutionary message in the literal sense of the term, which Moffat has obviously struggled to try to cancel, first with the retina of The Day of the Doctor, who shamelessly asserts the opposite imperative to preserve at all costs those same rapacious ruling classes and warmongers.

Then with The Time of the Doctor, in which his Eleven inflicts on the inhabitants of Trenzalore a thousand-year war that could have avoided him completely simply by going away, and is rewarded for this with a new cycle of regeneration by raptors and warmongers Time Lords who has preserved .

And finally, with the unworthy pantomime of Hell Bent, in which his Rassilon, inexplicably oblivious of his iron determination to destroy the universe in order to retain power until the end, suddenly reveals himself willing to immediately surrender to courtesy.

Because Moffat is keen to make us believe that the dictators at Erdogan are basically just a little gruffy old men, like the clones of Scrooge who regularly infest every Christmas special.

Once again there is a Zenith, The End of Time, and a Nadir, Moffat's Gallifreyana trilogy.

However, his time is expiring.

We hope to finally come back to decent scripts.

MOFFAT'S DOCTOR VS RTD'S DOCTOR

The Doctor Who's RTD era is full of Gnostic references. From The Parting of the Ways to Gridlock, from Human Nature / Family of Blood to Turn Left, from Utopia to The End of Time. The Doctor of Russell T. Davies is the Gnostic Christ who opposes the Demiurge, represented in Lord Rassilon's The End of Time.

The Doctor of RTD fights the Authority, always portrayed as cruel and corrupt.

Even the Moffat era is full of (more coarse) esoteric references, but the Doctor of Steven Moffat does not fight the Authority, he embodies it. And claims obedience: "Do as you're told!"

In the Moffat era, the Authority is always represented as worthy and indispensable.

If RTD also satirizes Obama, Moffat even sympathizes with Nixon.

The Doctor of Moffat shapes the universe by rewriting it and falsifying it continuously at will. "Rule one: the Doctor lies".

The Doctor of Moffat does not oppose the Demiurge.

It is the Demiurge.

I’ve had enough of the instahate towards show runners from the moment RTD was announced. It hit a ludicrous bent during Moffat. I’m not playing that game anymore. Ugh.
