About 4 frames are brown, anon. The rest either have some kind of red or green tinting if there's strong lighting, or they're relatively neutrally tinted allowing for the natural color highlights of the shot to stand out. There's a lot of blacks with high contrast but that's not brown.

Legitimately wonderful take. I can only hope that the next Faction Paradox destruction and diaspora waits until the Seventh Wave!

This also interfaces very well with the idea that the enemy is the cancellation of Dr Who. These sorts of metafictional interpretations are never heavy on my mind, but it's funny to notice that I started rooting for the enemy around the same time I became more open to the idea of NuWho getting the axe. Meanwhile, people like SirAlexH are taking it for granted (https://old.reddit.com/r/gallifrey/comments/9bql4m/doctor_who_extended_universe_releases_september/) that the Peace will be the Houses defeating the enemy, rather than the other way around!

In the EDAs and the FP comics, which are really the only hints we've had of the post-War universe, it certainly seems as if the enemy has won. Sure, the Time Lords set up a nice colony on the Needle, but even that was eventually overthrown. Meanwhile, in the rest of the universe, the power formerly wielded only by Gallifrey has become dispersed among all the lesser species of the universe. What better metaphor for the entry of Dr Who into the public domain?

>>99289

Great post. For some reason, this interpretation is inextricably linked to the Master = War Chief theory in my mind; I think it's because it's necessary to assume "the Doctor" is a new title in order to explain the War Chief's unfamiliarity. Of course, with stories like "The Beginning" and "Auld Mortality" Big Finish has thoroughly nixed both ideas.

That's another one for the "times Doctor Who was faced with two cool options and picked a boring third middle-ground" list, isn't it?

>The Doctor was given that name by his companions

vs

>The Doctor's name is really Dr. Who

=

>The Doctor chose the name "The Doctor" before he left Gallifrey

For example, one of those "dumb joke" photoshops involved rotoscoping one of the member's faces onto various death scenes, despite knowing that said member found it all uncomfortable.

He's conveniently missed off the bits where basically every member around, both mods and regular users, said it was fucked up and told him to stop doing it many many times. The temp ban for the Doctors thing was the straw that broke the camel's back, not some one-off fun thing, and involved pictures that people had made difficult to find and long-since deleted, not just some random shit they've posted on Discord or even Twitter.

Arguably this entire colour palettes debate is about juxtapositions of colour within an episode, which you can't see if you smear them into an average.

 No.99391

>>99390

averaging the colors like that anon is doing completely eliminates the concept of color palettes. The whole point is about how the multiple different colors used relate to each other, not blending the entire range of colors into one mathematical average - knowing the average has no value or meaning relevant to understanding the color composition of the image, beyond whether the shot is abstractly light or dark. And you don't need to blur the colors to tell that.

Extremely late, but I just read your post and felt like replying. I think the people with extremely negative opinions are more likely to voice that disapproval, whereas a lot of people are positive, but havent got much to say. I think the negativity will appear to be much higher til after series 11 has finished and we've all had time to think about the series as a whole. Then, if /who/ likes it, we'll chat about it, and if it's divisive, it might be the target of some negative memes. Well. It will be the target of /who/ memes regardless anyway.

I think you aren't in the minority really, I think the vast majority of us are more or less just waiting to see the season. Thanks for promoting postive vibes though, it's great.

Well, it does make sense. You physically can't write a story in 2018 where "modern day" isn't 2018. If you write a story set in 1985 it's still going to be retrospective.

 No.99476

I really like the meta idea of having Doctors in Big Finish or novels or Titan comics or whatever more or less sticking to their era for present day episodes, unless there was an idea for something that required the current present. So if youre giving 5 a Russell T Davies style invasion episode, I'd still set it in like 1983 or something.

But hey, Troughton visited 2018 in Enemy of the World haha

It's the original crew, Ian, Barbara, and Susan, and they land in the then-near future of 2006 (it was released November 2005). For reasons that become clear as the plot unfolds, London 2006 is a miserable sci-fi dystopia filled with some pretty insane stuff, but the half-measure I allude to is that a lot of the things Ian and Barbara are shocked by are true in our world as well, such as what tube stations look like now and the increasing sprawl of London over the past 50 years.

I should totally write a "Classic Tardis Team travels to modern London" story when Shit Trips 3 comes around.

You can measure how advanced of a Doctor Who fan someone is by how unwilling they are to watch it with their family or friends, or really with anyone else in the room at all. Your garden variety pleb will happily force their mum and dad to endure it. But as your engagement with each new episode becomes more complicated, watching the show becomes an increasingly private, sacred business that you don't want to have made uncomfortable by the presence and scrutiny of other human beings.

This is partly because you become more conscious of how awful the show sometimes looks to non-fans, and internalise that sense of shame. It is also partly because you start having reactions to the show, perhaps even external, that will be incomprehensible to anyone who doesn't see why The Rescue's rubber suit twist is brilliant, doesn't know which hack writer is ruining the show this week, or has never heard of Ian Levine. If you're an introverted loser, which by this point you inevitably are, the pressure to mediate and control your behaviour while watching with others starts to actively impede your enjoyment, as does the risk of people talking over the show, or worse, the implicit awkwardness of nobody talking over the show at all.

(Doesn't apply if you're attending a cinema screening with a load of strangers, where everyone's safely shrouded in darkness and the episode is too loud to be heard over.)

+ The other element of Moffat is that he's a showman through and through. I think he once said that he wrote every line of his scripts to try and entice the viewer into staying for the next line, or something to that effect. This applies to virtually everything he writes. There's always a punchline coming or a seduction happening. Obviously this had a severe negative side, but Moffat knew how to tease people and get them interested even if what he was selling was shit.

Chib's just hoping everyone watches it for the sake of it being Doctor Who. La di da, isn't Doctor Who great, you never forget your first Doctor, the Doctor brings hope to the children, we're making the Doctor Who you know and love. Doctor Who. Doctor Who.

I think one of the more annoying things of the Doctor Who fandom is how some fans of the classic - not all of them, but it does happen - get mad or annoyed at the fans of New Who who haven’t seen Classic Who.

I would love to watch Classic Who, and I know I’m not the only one. However, it’s impossible. Not because the episodes are simply not online, but they don’t exist anymore. They were destroyed, lost, whatever, but the BBC no longer has a lot of Classic Who.

So to the Classic Who fans who have a problem with the New Who fans not seeing the old series, it’s not because we don’t want to see it, it’s because we can’t. And I’m not going to watch a show with big chunks missing from it. That would be like reading a book with pages missing. And I won’t do that.

Visual EFFECTS don't matter as much but the location is no doubt very important in the scale of things. The "gothic horror" stories of the Tom and Sylv era wouldn't be anywhere as good if they were brightly lit and openly planned.

The problem is, the amount of cameos daleks have had contribute to their overall feeling like a non-threat. When the only time they're shown they aren't relevant to the story and don't pose a threat, it becomes more difficult to make them a threat again. Capaldi didn't have a single story where the daleks involved were actually a threat, besides ITD partially except even then they weren't the main conflict of the episode.

Same actually largely applies to the entirety of the moff era, not just smith. It's not really since journey's end that the daleks have actually been a credible threat. It's more than time for the daleks to have a rest so they can be reintroduced as an actual threat once again

Literally all of my anti-hype started after SDCC, Chib and company spouting empty rhetoric about the show and lead character, the teasers looking boring as hell/slightly embarrassing, the total absence of reasons to be interested in this take on Doctor Who. Yeah, it was just filmed second. Like how Castrovalva wasnt the first story Davison filmed. I once had a thought about watching a season in filming order, just for the idea of following the lead actors. For matt smith you would start with the angels and river song, before you even got to the 11th hour

 No.99996

So, based on what we know now, the order seems to be:

Ep 1: 13 lands on Earth

Ep 2: Weird alien planet

Ep 3: Rosa Parks

Ep 4: Pendle Witch Trials

Ep 5: ?

Ep 6: ?

Ep 7: M-preg ep

Ep 8: ?

Ep 9: ?

Ep 10: ?

> I once had a thought about watching a season in filming order, just for the idea of following the lead actors.

We should do a S11 rewatch in filming order, after it airs.

I agree, Chibnall seems so timid and doesn't seem to be able to get people hype like RTD and Moff could.

Moffat was EXTREMELY aggressive with Series 5.

 No.100005

>>100004

I wonder if this has to do with the fact that the episodes Chibnall wrote in the past were "okay" at best.

Moffat was known as the guy who could deliver an amazing 10/10 episode every year; everyone loved him, and he used that to build up hype.

 No.100006

True. Chibnall seems more introverted or reserved, to be honest. RTD knew how to market to excite an audience, and Moffat was cheeky enough that he could rile people up. But Chibnall seems to lack that skill.
