It's called complementary colours, love

Big Finish's Doctor Who range makes me want to commit murder.

Really? That's your proof?

It's called making corporate-oriented decisions to appeal to the largest quantity of people with the most superficial tactics at their disposal and it should not be commended.

Complementary colors are color theory on basic bitch mode, especially teal and orange.

"The Deathsmiths of Goth"

The fact he says "I'll give you that" means it's an exception to the norm. Whatever that one image was he saw some humor in, but that doesn't override all of the others he was upset with.

You're showing a clear inability to recognise and interpret social cues.

Remember when Doctor Who had color palettes that varied depending on the tone they wanted for a specific episode/scene, instead of applying the same color palette uniformly to everything?

Actually goth and metal are completely different genres.

i can see them, yes. but do i care for them? no.

Most of that is just brown.

>Actually goth and metal are completely different genres.

To be fair, the Hartnell and Troughton era was much less inventive in terms of colour palettes.

About 4 frames are brown, anon. The rest either have some kind of red or green tinting if there's strong lighting, or they're relatively neutrally tinted allowing for the natural color highlights of the shot to stand out. There's a lot of blacks with high contrast but that's not brown.

>i can see them, yes. but do i care for them? no.

What is 'them'?

dont be daft, you know exactly what "them" is, now go fuck off.

I know literally nothing, I have never been on the reddit discord, I'm just baffled by how strange this drama is and how self righteous you're acting

As cool as a black and white episode today would be, I would no joke love an honest and wild first or second doctor episode in vivid, crazy color. Black and white TV robbed us of lots of weird ass visuals in those stories.

File: 028d6e5fc2b7adf⋯.png (24.19 KB, 1500x983, 1500:983, mud.png)

Let me show you. On the left is the S11 trailer given an average blur to show the average colour, on the right is the Series 9 trailer given the same treatment. As you can see, the both of them are brown. This means brown is the most common colour in both of these series, and neither are acceptable. Understood?

>using the trailer with the saturation and contrast cranked up

But I take your point.

I bet you think that dress was white and gold

Legitimately wonderful take. I can only hope that the next Faction Paradox destruction and diaspora waits until the Seventh Wave!

This also interfaces very well with the idea that the enemy is the cancellation of Dr Who. These sorts of metafictional interpretations are never heavy on my mind, but it's funny to notice that I started rooting for the enemy around the same time I became more open to the idea of NuWho getting the axe. Meanwhile, people like SirAlexH are taking it for granted (https://old.reddit.com/r/gallifrey/comments/9bql4m/doctor_who_extended_universe_releases_september/) that the Peace will be the Houses defeating the enemy, rather than the other way around!

In the EDAs and the FP comics, which are really the only hints we've had of the post-War universe, it certainly seems as if the enemy has won. Sure, the Time Lords set up a nice colony on the Needle, but even that was eventually overthrown. Meanwhile, in the rest of the universe, the power formerly wielded only by Gallifrey has become dispersed among all the lesser species of the universe. What better metaphor for the entry of Dr Who into the public domain?

Great post. For some reason, this interpretation is inextricably linked to the Master = War Chief theory in my mind; I think it's because it's necessary to assume "the Doctor" is a new title in order to explain the War Chief's unfamiliarity. Of course, with stories like "The Beginning" and "Auld Mortality" Big Finish has thoroughly nixed both ideas.

That's another one for the "times Doctor Who was faced with two cool options and picked a boring third middle-ground" list, isn't it?

>The Doctor was given that name by his companions

>The Doctor's name is really Dr. Who

>The Doctor chose the name "The Doctor" before he left Gallifrey

>self righteous

there's nothing righteous about that

For example, one of those "dumb joke" photoshops involved rotoscoping one of the member's faces onto various death scenes, despite knowing that said member found it all uncomfortable.

He's conveniently missed off the bits where basically every member around, both mods and regular users, said it was fucked up and told him to stop doing it many many times. The temp ban for the Doctors thing was the straw that broke the camel's back, not some one-off fun thing, and involved pictures that people had made difficult to find and long-since deleted, not just some random shit they've posted on Discord or even Twitter.

I'm starting to find it hard to tell if this is actually bait or if you legitimately believe blurring the colors like that means anything

Okay, so it's not ENTIRELY brown. There's some green in there.

The themes of brown, beige and green in Series 9 signify camouflage; just one of the many underlying pro-military messages in that series.

Arguably this entire colour palettes debate is about juxtapositions of colour within an episode, which you can't see if you smear them into an average.

averaging the colors like that anon is doing completely eliminates the concept of color palettes. The whole point is about how the multiple different colors used relate to each other, not blending the entire range of colors into one mathematical average - knowing the average has no value or meaning relevant to understanding the color composition of the image, beyond whether the shot is abstractly light or dark. And you don't need to blur the colors to tell that.

Extremely late, but I just read your post and felt like replying. I think the people with extremely negative opinions are more likely to voice that disapproval, whereas a lot of people are positive, but havent got much to say. I think the negativity will appear to be much higher til after series 11 has finished and we've all had time to think about the series as a whole. Then, if /who/ likes it, we'll chat about it, and if it's divisive, it might be the target of some negative memes. Well. It will be the target of /who/ memes regardless anyway.

I think you aren't in the minority really, I think the vast majority of us are more or less just waiting to see the season. Thanks for promoting postive vibes though, it's great.

So The Christmas Carol is a fairly faithful adaptation of the novel of the same name, and while it has a flying shark and stuff, I feel it is fairly true to the spirit of the original novel, of redemption at christmas. What other things would you like to see a Doctor Who episode do? I once had an idea that Doctor Who could do an episode where the Doctor is talking someone out of suicide and shows them the alternative timelines where they never existed.. like "Its a Wonderful Life"

Curious to know if you guys have other ideas for things Doctor Who could roughly adapt

Christmas Invasion > Voyage > Runaway Bride > End of Time > Christmas carol > everything else

When Return of Doctor Mysterio first aired, the complaints were really weird like,

>capeshit episode

>he's just a copy of superman

But like… it was a parody of capeshit, specifically a parody of the christopher reeve superhero films. So of course it was basically just discount superman and discount lois lane…. and of course it was unoriginal… because it was poking fun at superhero tropes, so it basically had to use all the superhero tropes.

Surely if it was bait you'd put The Next Doctor at the top.

mofffags just got dabbed on

People who hate Mysterio have bizarre brainlet complaints in general. As if a show that has pastiched countless genres is suddenly barred from doing cape movies? And that still misses the real core of the episode, which is a romantic farce with Capaldi as the third wheel.

If someone just said they didn't like it, or thought it wasn't a funny parody, or if they just didnt like doctor who doing genre stuff then… fine. What are /who/'s thoughts on changing the 'present day' of Classic Doctors to more modern times. E.g a 5th Doctor story where modern day Earth is 2018.

i could see it. i'd be fine with that.

Doesn't matter as long as it's consistent, either they are a product of their time or they aren't.

What do you mean by this? Going back and changing the stories?

For more then just one just one story, it becoming the default for modern Earth stories.

With new stories like Big Finish who do this most of the time.

I prefer the reverse tactic, taking modern day earth and treating it as a sci-fi dystopia when classic characters visit it.

They came really close to this in The Time Travelers but they didn't quite go through with it.

Well, it does make sense. You physically can't write a story in 2018 where "modern day" isn't 2018. If you write a story set in 1985 it's still going to be retrospective.

I really like the meta idea of having Doctors in Big Finish or novels or Titan comics or whatever more or less sticking to their era for present day episodes, unless there was an idea for something that required the current present. So if youre giving 5 a Russell T Davies style invasion episode, I'd still set it in like 1983 or something.

But hey, Troughton visited 2018 in Enemy of the World haha

>They came really close to this in The Time Travelers but they didn't quite go through with it.

sounds like a kino idea

I really do prefer that method too, makes for much more interesting stories. Big Finish almost gave us that in The Destination Wars but they chickened out.

It's the original crew, Ian, Barbara, and Susan, and they land in the then-near future of 2006 (it was released November 2005). For reasons that become clear as the plot unfolds, London 2006 is a miserable sci-fi dystopia filled with some pretty insane stuff, but the half-measure I allude to is that a lot of the things Ian and Barbara are shocked by are true in our world as well, such as what tube stations look like now and the increasing sprawl of London over the past 50 years.

I should totally write a "Classic Tardis Team travels to modern London" story when Shit Trips 3 comes around.

You can measure how advanced of a Doctor Who fan someone is by how unwilling they are to watch it with their family or friends, or really with anyone else in the room at all. Your garden variety pleb will happily force their mum and dad to endure it. But as your engagement with each new episode becomes more complicated, watching the show becomes an increasingly private, sacred business that you don't want to have made uncomfortable by the presence and scrutiny of other human beings.

This is partly because you become more conscious of how awful the show sometimes looks to non-fans, and internalise that sense of shame. It is also partly because you start having reactions to the show, perhaps even external, that will be incomprehensible to anyone who doesn't see why The Rescue's rubber suit twist is brilliant, doesn't know which hack writer is ruining the show this week, or has never heard of Ian Levine. If you're an introverted loser, which by this point you inevitably are, the pressure to mediate and control your behaviour while watching with others starts to actively impede your enjoyment, as does the risk of people talking over the show, or worse, the implicit awkwardness of nobody talking over the show at all.

(Doesn't apply if you're attending a cinema screening with a load of strangers, where everyone's safely shrouded in darkness and the episode is too loud to be heard over.)

She's in charge bro!

miss me yet?

I'm still cautiously optimistic. I am going in thrilled for anything amazing we get but won't be disappointed if we somehow get something worse than series 2.

>supposedly more critical-thinking and edgy personalities in the online Doctor Who fandom sticking their heads in the sand regarding the ideological takeover of the show

Er. Who the fuck is he talking about? Sincere question. He can't possibly mean the Eruditorum guys because they're all perfectly aware (and supportive) of the SJW angle. And surely any critics in the fandom that Hoodie would cite as 'edgy' would have already jumped on the "Vandalization of Doctor Who!!!" train. So who is it?

He's talking about people here. I'm certain of it.

One thing I really do miss about Moffat is having him write stuff about the show; press releases, DWM columns, interview responses, etc. Moff would always go out of his way to sex it up with some ostentatious wit, self-deprecating barbs, sardonic jibes at his colleagues and an irreverent attitude to his characters.

Chibnall is so mincing, simpering and fucking dull in comparison. Maybe he's put a massive filter on himself so he only turns out empty, corporate-friendly platitudes.

…Ohhh. I get it now.

>implying I haven't forced my family and friends to watch shitty shows for my own personal enjoyment and to punish them for the audacity of taking an interest.

There have been so, so many. I've even forced loved ones to watch dinosaurs on a spaceship.

Doesn't go far enough desu.

Yes, though mostly because I don't get angry when I see his hairline.

Chibnall looks like a guy that was bullied by the DnD club at school.

Stubagful? FiveWhoFans? WhoAddicts? Dimmeh maybe?

+ The other element of Moffat is that he's a showman through and through. I think he once said that he wrote every line of his scripts to try and entice the viewer into staying for the next line, or something to that effect. This applies to virtually everything he writes. There's always a punchline coming or a seduction happening. Obviously this had a severe negative side, but Moffat knew how to tease people and get them interested even if what he was selling was shit.

Chib's just hoping everyone watches it for the sake of it being Doctor Who. La di da, isn't Doctor Who great, you never forget your first Doctor, the Doctor brings hope to the children, we're making the Doctor Who you know and love. Doctor Who. Doctor Who.

I think one of the more annoying things of the Doctor Who fandom is how some fans of the classic - not all of them, but it does happen - get mad or annoyed at the fans of New Who who haven’t seen Classic Who.

I would love to watch Classic Who, and I know I’m not the only one. However, it’s impossible. Not because the episodes are simply not online, but they don’t exist anymore. They were destroyed, lost, whatever, but the BBC no longer has a lot of Classic Who.

So to the Classic Who fans who have a problem with the New Who fans not seeing the old series, it’s not because we don’t want to see it, it’s because we can’t. And I’m not going to watch a show with big chunks missing from it. That would be like reading a book with pages missing. And I won’t do that.

NuWho would be a better show if certain episodes went missing.

Is this from reddit?

I just saw the Series 11 new trailer.

I'm honestly even more hype now.

Of note: "I'm the Doctor. When people need help, I never refuse" sounds like this is from when 13 gets back her memory in Ep 1. It's also notably, whether intentional or not, a restatement of 12's monologue in The Doctor Falls, showing that she remembers the character growth of her predecessor. (Also, the differences between what she said and "I save people" from Series 9 probably shows a key difference between 13 and 12.)

Opinions on Nilso unironically coming out yesterday?

The stories will be mediocre but the character interactions will make them enjoyable

just like half of S10

Even if the stories are bad, the character chemistry will be off the roof.

Also, I like how Northern the 13th Doctor is. "let's get a shift on"; "when things need fixin." And her voice is very nice to listen to.

Telltale haven't released an official statement on TWD yet, but fired employees on twitter have said that the TWD team were all fired along with everyone else and there's only like 25 people left at the company. Episode 2 still comes out in a couple days, but that will likely be the last unless there's more information we're yet to be told

same desu, they seemed to have finally figured out a dynamic that worked (basically redoing S1 lee-clem but with clem-AJ) and I was actually legitimately interested again for the first time since S1

nilsos unironically verged and unironically gay. it's a big day for unirony

Series 4 has finally found its way after the roadblock of "fun" that Series 3 was, and a lot of the characters seem really fresh despite their allusions and stereotypes (the tough one, the quiet one, the inquisitive one, the brash one, the smart-arse one) etc.

If S4 doesn't finish I'm gonna be really annoyed.

There are no 2 parters in the season but I’m sure Neo will try to tell you there are after it airs

I don't really think visuals matter in the grand scheme of things if the episode or story are strong enough to work without them. Saying that, however, the gothic horror stories would look out of place in an environment which doesn't suit them.

Visual EFFECTS don't matter as much but the location is no doubt very important in the scale of things. The "gothic horror" stories of the Tom and Sylv era wouldn't be anywhere as good if they were brightly lit and openly planned.

meant to delete that top one, apologies

Take Timelash for an example in setting. The Borad works best as a visual character when he's in his control room surrounded by dim lights and slightly off-color schemes. When he's out in the dull grey and brightly lit Council Room at the end of the story he's nowhere near as impressive.

In the Power of Three, Chibnall brought back RTD-style gratuitous celebrity cameos…. This season will be full of them. And that's a good thing!

I bet pregnant man is actually minor part of the episode. Thoughts?

wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he's just a setpiece and not related to the actual plot

From how this shot is framed I think he'll be a fairly prominent side character.

Also according to old news and interviews that I've been going through recently, Chibs was appointed to write at least 2 episode for 7b.

what changed?

Anybody actually got the leaked pics of pregnant dude? Particularly the one where he's presumably cradling the baby.

He wanted to do Broadchurch instead

We know from the leaked pics that he gives birth during the episode, so I wouldn't be surprised if he's a big part of it. For instance, maybe there's a monster stalking the space station or whatever it is, and they can't run away because soyboy is pregnant. So they have to stay on the ship and protect mr betacuck. Im making those jokes purely because of his face, not even because hes pregnant

honestly this is such a non piece of news, monsters alone rarely make the story.

I dont really care about whether there are old monsters or not. I hope Jodie meets the daleks though before she fucks off, even if it's just a cameo

The era of Big Finish and new who has actually made it newsworthy that the show can go ten episodes without a Dalek

>“There are no [Daleks]!” he says.

What did he say instead of "daleks"?

pepperpots. probably

It would make Jodie stand out if she never had them. Even McGann had a small cameo for them in his movie. She’d be unique

>Peter Capaldi had an idea for a musical Doctor Who episode that never got made

fuck he was too good for this world

>“This is Doctor Who in an era of Netflix – you’ve got to keep up,” he says. “You’ve got to keep up with Black Mirror, you’ve got to keep up with all the DC shows in the US."

Can't wait to see the Doctor Who that will compete with fucking Arrow and Supergirl.

Just a note, if Daleks turn up at Christmas can we take it as official proof that the "Daleks are contractually obligated to show up on screen once a year" urban legend is actually true, regardless of Moffat's denials?

>2005: Dalek, Parting of the Ways

>2006: Doomsday

>2007: Manhattan/Evolution

>2012: Asylum

>2013: Day/Time

>2014: Into the Dalek

>2015: Magician/Witch

>2016: Friend From The Future minisode (perhaps the most egregious example)

>2017: The Pilot (cameo)

"stupid salt shaker shaped fuckers"

Capaldi's era was very referential to the show, even having Gallifrey, 60s daleks, mondasian cybermen, multiple masters…

It makes sense to do a less referential series in 2018. I dont think its a big deal though, he doesnt need to make a song and dance about it

there are "people" who thought capals input on his era was bad

Peter Capaldi for showrunner

If they can get away with the 2016 one they should just do more of those instead of putting kino taxes on full episodes

pic rel right?

The problem is, the amount of cameos daleks have had contribute to their overall feeling like a non-threat. When the only time they're shown they aren't relevant to the story and don't pose a threat, it becomes more difficult to make them a threat again. Capaldi didn't have a single story where the daleks involved were actually a threat, besides ITD partially except even then they weren't the main conflict of the episode.

Same actually largely applies to the entirety of the moff era, not just smith. It's not really since journey's end that the daleks have actually been a credible threat. It's more than time for the daleks to have a rest so they can be reintroduced as an actual threat once again

>Chibnall said: "I mean, Doctor Who is the single greatest idea anybody’s ever had in the history of television, so just make that, really, and make it to the best of your ability.”

Sounds like a perfect strategy to make shit Doctor Who.

>Capaldi didn't have a single story where the daleks involved were actually a threat

Magician's Apprentice had a pretty badass scene where they execute Missy and Clara, and it didn't get undone for a whole week!

Big Finish Productions: We just like… make it?

Virtually the only time in the moff era where a dalek shot at something and actually hit its target

do you think the BBC cucked chib or does he really think template doctor who is the best possible thing he could contribute to one of the longest running shows on TV?

heaven sent would still be pretty good if it was filmed in moffat's house on a camcorder

I suspect Chib just has pretty low standards and would be happy with any churned out generic Who as long as it appealed to a certain sense of nostalgia within him.

just fuckin do doctor who ay

Why was Jeff watching porn fully clothed while his grandma was just in the other room?

He's a man with very specific tastes. Although, we've always assumed it was porn, but it could just as easily have been 4chan.

Chib is SJW Briggs

Doctor Who is dead.

so briggs then

There is yet to be anything in tv doctor who to surpass Creatures of Beauty. Briggs might be shit most of the time but he does occasionally write the best doctor who stuff of all time

>There is yet to be anything in tv doctor who to surpass Creatures of Beauty.

I love Creatures of Beauty but no. The ending is the only genuinely inspired thing about it.

I need to give it a listen.

Anyone here listened to I, Davros?

So did I.

It's kino, Davros is my favorite vilain so I might be biased but I think that it is one of the best mini-series BF has done.

I liked it. VNA level dark too

In hindsight this is unfair. Creatures of Beauty is seriously admirable for its non-linear structural choices and the way it uncompromisingly pushes its artistic vision, depicting a true tragedy where the problem is a doomed society rather than a single villain. I still wouldn't put it above most of the true standouts from the TV show, but it's easily in the highest echelon of the audios.

why? Honestly the single part finales in the new series haven't been my favourite tbqh. I dont think there will be 2 parters, but I kinda wish there would be for the finale. Gives it more time to flesh stuff out

Same as ever - take whatever TV/film/game he's interested in and put his self-insert Doctor OC into it.

I wish he'd use some more photos of himself if he's going to do this.

>imitating Big Finish

Saying that, I can't even fucking talk about others using the same image multiple times when I've done the same thing.

Sometimes I have to stop and remind myself that there was a point this year when I was actually cautiously hyped for S11. The reveal of 3 companions, finding out there was a police station involved in the first episode and that Yaz was a cop, the leak that Alan Cumming would be in it, the rumours about exploring the companions' ancestry in Ireland, India etc.

Literally all of my anti-hype started after SDCC, Chib and company spouting empty rhetoric about the show and lead character, the teasers looking boring as hell/slightly embarrassing, the total absence of reasons to be interested in this take on Doctor Who. I can't believe how downhill and pessimistic I've gotten as a result of stuff that's supposed to be promotional

Also, apparently it's from the mpreg episode and if that one ends up being the kino of the seaso I'll have a good laff

> Like a farewell. Maybe she's making some kind of self-sacrifice, and she thinks this is her final moments.

I got that too. Or maybe someone else is doing the sacrifice, and she's saying good-bye. Either way, it's emotional, in a way we might not have seen from 13.

> if that one ends up being the kino of the season I'll have a good laff

So will I. I've heard that it might be Ep 7 of the season.

>Also, apparently it's from the mpreg episode

nah, she wears a red shirt in the mpreg episode:

>So will I. I've heard that it might be Ep 7 of the season.

Yeah, it was the second episode to be filmed, part of the first shooting block. It was confirmed later that episode 7 was in Block 1

Interesting. Then this "blow a kiss and walk away" ep >>99985 is Ep 2, most likely. The mpreg ep is still Ep 7, though.

>The mpreg ep is still Ep 7, though.

Yeah, it was just filmed second. Like how Castrovalva wasnt the first story Davison filmed. I once had a thought about watching a season in filming order, just for the idea of following the lead actors. For matt smith you would start with the angels and river song, before you even got to the 11th hour

So, based on what we know now, the order seems to be:

Ep 1: 13 lands on Earth

Ep 2: Weird alien planet

Ep 3: Rosa Parks

Ep 4: Pendle Witch Trials

Ep 5: ?

Ep 6: ?

Ep 7: M-preg ep

Ep 8: ?

Ep 9: ?

Ep 10: ?

> I once had a thought about watching a season in filming order, just for the idea of following the lead actors.

We should do a S11 rewatch in filming order, after it airs.

iirc the filming order is mostly the same as the regular order, except episode 7 is right after episode 1, and 5 and 6 swap places

I'm gonna frame this

quints confirm

Doctor Who premieres at 7pm british time

I agree, Chibnall seems so timid and doesn't seem to be able to get people hype like RTD and Moff could.

Moffat was EXTREMELY aggressive with Series 5.

I wonder if this has to do with the fact that the episodes Chibnall wrote in the past were "okay" at best.

Moffat was known as the guy who could deliver an amazing 10/10 episode every year; everyone loved him, and he used that to build up hype.

True. Chibnall seems more introverted or reserved, to be honest. RTD knew how to market to excite an audience, and Moffat was cheeky enough that he could rile people up. But Chibnall seems to lack that skill.

Moffat, Series 5: "This whole series is gonna be like a fairytale. It's magical and scary. It's brilliant as hell."

Chibnall, Series 11: "Well, it's Doctor Who, you're gonna watch it, right?"

inb4 the BBC picked Chinballs to lead the series because he could be easily pushed around, unlike RTD and Moff who were loose cannons

Chibnall said that having a female Doctr was his condition for working. He's calling the shots.

Well, Chibnall was more talking about the heartwarming parts of being a Who fan. But yeah, he's not really hyping it up as much.

wouldnt even be surprised desu

This really sums it up.

Look close in this scene in the trailer, and you can see the frown line that Jodie was talking about in that interview. I think it looks cute.

chibnall was the only candidate who had showrunning experience with a well received show

im fully convinced "showrunning experience" is just a meme desu

Trust me, it's not a meme. Showrunning is a job, that's as much organizational as creative. It's a different skill from writing, and should be taken seriously.

I'm fully convinced that you are ignorant of the logistics of running a TV show desu.

kinda bought super male vitality just to try it out as a joke

please enlighten me o' wise television industry worker

you aren't just a writer, you're a production manager and that's a position that needs experience to prove ability

>that needs experience to prove ability

oh yeah?

have you ever had a job interview?

a what?

Migration back to 4chan when?

probably when the first episode airs, depending on the climate people may stay here though

It's annoying that I can't unify my 4chin threadwatcher with this one

I've never had any idea how to use this function or why it's a feature. I just leave a tab open.

I use it when it's a slow thread on a slow board like /mu/. It's basically a (You) alert.

Why is Chibnall being selfish and not bringing back a monster/ villain? At least 1 would have been nice.

Selfishness would have been giving in to his nostalgia and bringing back more old shit at the expense of potential new ideas.

Absolutely based

I don’t think he’s said they refuse to have any returning monsters, just that from the 10 episodes this year there won’t be any with a returning villain.

He wants to establish his era as a new thing rather than relying on the past

This is your periodical reminder that of all the pop musicians the BBC could have used in their marketing for the new era of Doctor Who, they went with Macklemore.

It was Chibnall's personal choice

Jodie is unironically a poor choice for The Doctor. She lacks charisma, seems very boring and has little experience with anything other than hard-hitting drama.

This is all spot-on.
