How does one play Spectre?

I tried her out in a game with a few friends and finished 7:2 without really knowing what I was doing. Since then I've played her over and over again and still don't get why I can't get even close to 5 kills by the end of each game.

Every single guide tells me the exact same thing: get Radiance by the 20-25 minute mark. That rules out pub games as the odds of NOT ending up with a farm-stealing carry or support in lane with me are very low indeed. Even if I do by some miracle bag enough early-game kills/farm to grab a Radiance… why do I need it? Farming at that point is useless as any form of silence or even a mere stun while my ult is on cooldown would turn me into some carry's meal, meaning that farming past the mid game would be too risky. It doesn't add any form of disable to her lacking inventory (so why not just get diffusal every game?), meaning that its gank value is low.

Upon throwing all of my gold into the overly-praised Radiance, I'm left with a pair of boots, a shield (that self-counters one of my passives) and a lot of right-click damage. Using my ult to prey on those alone sometimes works but more often than not they just stun or slow me and run away until my dagger loses its effect.

Is there something I'm missing here?

Radiance is definitely a weird item that seems really useless at first. You spend 20 minutes farming for a radiance, and then when you do get it you have to farm for 20 more minutes because all you have is a radiance.

However, radiance does work on spectre for a couple of reasons.

First, she is not someone who has burst damage. She can't kill someone extremely fast like an ursa or PA can. But, because she's really hard to kill because of her passive, she stays alive longer in fights. As a result, you get more radiance burn damage off. Radiance also works on illusions, so whenever you ult everyone on the map is receiving the burn damage for the 7 or so seconds that your ult lasts.

Second, because of her ult, you can be constantly farming and then pop into a fight when you need to. The radiance helps a lot with her farming speed, too. Midas and battlefury are also good items for helping with farm, but neither do anything to make your illusions stronger.

Of course, radiance isn't the only build on her. A popular build besides radiance is rushing drums diffusal for lots of early-mid game damage. Another build that's a bit more unorthodox is rushing mask of madness skadi. The skadi makes you incredibly tanky and slows by a lot especially with her Q providing a slow as well. The mask of madness's attack speed does so much if an enemy is alone because you're getting a lot more desolate hits in for the bonus pure damage.

250/300/350 dmg to the entire opposing team is it not? Plus the bonus attack damage for all your illusions. Its not going teamwipe in itself, but it can pop escaping bad guys or make the enemy hesitate in their engagement, fracturing their team.

the shield doesn't counter your passive, think of it like this. You only have so much health you can lose before die, which means only a set amount of damage can be inflicted with the passive before you die. The shield stops you taking damage, but they'll still have to inflict that damage on you to kill you, so they'll still take that damage eventually. It slows everything down, which as a tank, is exactly what you want.

Thats what your escape, your passives and your team are for. You are the hard carry, you should have total farm priority, when you can't get it you go elsewhere and your team should move in to deal with the problem you couldn't tackle solo. Obviously in pubs this may not happen as it should. An early BKB is a must, as is a Vanguard and probably a wand.

Diffusal has its uses, if mana draining/purging is going to be particularly effective against the opposing team, Medusa for example, then I'd get it. Otherwise you'd be better off with a Manta for silence purging, spell dodging, more illusions and a plethora of other things.

Just want to make a note that raw attack damage does not affect your illusions, same with attack speed. Only your base damage (stats).

Hp and mana are the only that remain the same, otherwise you could distinguish the real hero based on their health bar.

Other than that, illusions only benefit from strength, agi, int. And for passives: mana burn, radiance burn, evasion, true strike.
