 No.1943

Hi, /dota2/,

I've been trying to become a better carry player as of late and, while I think I've improved, I can't seem to farm nearly as well as I should.

I know of all the basics to farming. I know how to last hit, deny, stack and pull camps, but a typical match as a carry usually puts me at 3-4 last hits per minute or 5 last hits per minute if I go tryhard with farming. My personal record, according to Dotabuff, if 6.6 last hits per minute, and I know that's pathetic. I've been watching a lot of professional games and they always seem to farm miles ahead of me. I've tried to mimic their actions, but I still only get half as much farm as they do.

What can I do to better my farming?

 No.1944

They farm well because their supports give them a free lane. Of you're playing someone who can clear creeps well, just burst down the wave them go into the jungle to kill the 2 nearest camps. The offlane won't go contest your farm because they will have a creep wave at their tower from you clearing it fast

This is assuming their offlane is solo, which usually doesn't happen in low tier matches.

Something that most people find helpful is going into 1v1 bots and setting the enemy one to hard or unfair. If you have around 50 lh at the end, you're doing pretty good.

I've always figured that last hitting was something you had to learn on your own, like most things in Dota, but is practice really the only way to improve? There isn't a secret to getting more LH/Min?

It seems like there's only so much I've been able to improve on with last hitting practice.

Quelling blade helps but a higher tier people don't like it because you need that extra 225 gold and it can be a burden. ring of aquila, if you're playing a natural carrier of it, it's always good in lane, You honestly shouldn't need quelling blade if you're good at last hitting, but for a lot of people because it helps speed up that farm. I mean you can also get it to cut down trees but usually that's pretty irrelevant unless you're constantly getting ganked, you have a gem and enemy treant has aghs, or if you just fucking hate trees for some reason.

Bots are a great way to practice. The harder ones are huge assholes and you can get used to constant harassment and denies while you're just trying to get cs.

Basically, my response is "git gud." learn how to lh with your favorite heroes since they're going to be the ones you play the most often.

Oh, don't be a fucktard and farm the whole time. cs is good but if your team is trying to get the rest of rax and you're the tipping point to mega creeps, you do everything you can to push with them. I just dealt with said fucktard. God, I hate solo queue.

The only magic way to get better at last hitting is to learn how to gauge things better.

You need to learn how long your animation takes and, if you're ranged, how long the missile will take to travel to the creep. Then from there you need to work out when you need to start your animation to do your damage so that you get the last hit. I, personally, attack two or three times on the first creep wave to get an idea of how much percentage I do to that creeps health bar and to familiarize myself with the animation.

Some heroes will require more practice than others, some examples:
Chaos Knight has a pretty huge damage range at level 1, 29-59, so it's very easy to miss a few last hits in a contested lane due to bad luck.
Drow's animation, before getting marksmanship, takes almost 2 seconds to wind up.
Razor's animation can be misleading as he has to have a missile travel and people will often just assume it's instant, like a melee hero.

Also, like >>1952 said.
Quelling blade is a good way to help with last hitting, but I should add that it's only good if you're melee. Ranged units would benefit more from a Bracer/Wraith Band/Null Talisman as the lower percentage of damage will often be less useful than most flat damage increases.
To quote a playdota thread from long ago:
>12% of 60 damage is 7 damage. For 225 you can be picking up much better shit. I've only ever done it on enchant for pullin as sentinel in order to double or triple pull easily and save time between the three camps. Even then I usually just waste a tango charge for the 5 minutes
>Its the impossible problem of by the time you have enough damage for quell to be worth it on ranged heroes, you don't need to waste the slot and don't need the damage to last hit anymore.

Also, yeah don't be that guy that AFK farms until the enemy are pushing your rax and then wonder why your team is so shit.
What you should do is you should try to be more aware of your situation though. If your whole team is just staring down the enemy team in the mid lane and no one is going to initiate you should be farming, but keep a TP handy so you can get there if something does start to happen. You need to make the most of your time while also being a team player.
