There are a handful of heroes who can play well in any lane, I suggest you practice with some of them, since they have such high utility. They are Magnus, Queen of Pain, Kunkka, Weaver, Dark Seer, Undying, Bloodseeker, and Windranger. Most middle lane heroes can also safelane and vice versa.
Timbersaw is my personal favorite offlaner. If you're good with positioning, he pays off really well and is an excellent pub stomper. Depending on the lineup, nearly ANYONE can lane mid. I've won games by playing as heroes like Ogre Magi mid, it's the most important lane in the game and heroes can get so much out of it if you play well.
There are a few "instant win mid" heroes, who have laning presence so strong, they should only be beaten by other instant win mid heroes. These heroes are Viper, Huskar, Luna, Sniper, Clinkz, Skywrath Mage, Lich, and Bane. I wouldn't recommend starting with a hero who is extremely reliant on success in the middle lane, like Tinker or Shadow Fiend, until you've got the hang of it.

>Huskar offlane
Not recommended, but I guess it could work. I've learned that safelane Huskar sucks, so the offlane might be worth it.
