I figure I may as well make a thread about glorious cheap items, particularly for the early game.

So here's an item I really like: Quelling Blade.

Building it on melee is obvious, but I tend to build this shit on ranged heroes too. Reason being: I am a woodcutting addict. Obviously a quelling blade's value rises if the enemy has a Nature's Prophet (although tangos will do too) but it has so much more fun shit than that. If you're top lane as Radiant, Quelling Blade will give you access to a fun top pull where you pull the large creep camp into your side of the lane. In general when pulling, quelling blade can give you a double pull where you pull a second camp into your first one and get an entire wave of lane creeps to vanish, but that shit is tricky to time.

Quelling Blade is also often basically my shadowblade. A few precise chops and I can hide in the middle of trees where no one can see me. And then I chop out and go SURPRISE MOTHERFUCKER and gank the everloving shit out of enemies. Dire top and radiant bot are both susceptible to some precise cuts that let you arrive right next to the tower from the jungle for some freakish ganks right where someone low hp thinks they're safe.

There are also lots of timesavers and special routes you can chop between trees. If you're Pudge, a Quelling Blade lets you be ten times the asshole and hook someone into trees where the only escape is through you (which you're blocking) so they're fucked. And a quelling blade often lets you perform great jukes in trees because you cut your way out somewhere no one was expecting. If you have tangos it can get sillier because they have no cd on eating trees but that shit costs gold per use.

gg branches just get six of em at the start of the game and you'll be fine for the next 10 minutes

'Nother fun item that drives enemies batshit insane: Soul Ring.

It lets you spam all kinds of shit in lane to drive the enemy nuts with ability harass. Damn near any hero becomes a royal pain that will burn through your consumable regen in a flash when there's a soul ring out. This is actually one of my favorite items to build as Sven at the start especially if I'm up against ranged heroes in lane. When you can spam Storm Hammer, instead of them harassing you, you're harassing them out of lane (plus in fights it's fun to be able to ult and hammer twice, but mangos also do this shit).

One of the laziest ways to win in the laning phase but damn it is good.

The fun shit about this item is the aura toggle: If you time it right you can fuck up the enemy's last hits pretty damn hard without pushing lane. Not as good as it used to be now that the aura is just 2 armor but still. I've had games where toggling this shit just right would cost my enemy some 20 last hits.

I've built this shit on Drow just for stats and regen tbh. I don't even need to build it into anything. It's just my regen item and one that helps my lane buddy too. These days it can also make for a spiffy vlads later.

I also occasionally build this shit if I have a shitty lane like double melee against ranged heroes because it lets us handle harass better and swipe some last hits instead of just hugging at zero gold and burning through consumables.

Why is this thread a thing

 No.3693

>>3692

Because I see a lot of people who are a little too eager to jump straight into lategame items as if the early game is just something you have to suffer through.

They don't seem to notice that the early game can set the balance of power for the entire match.

you're literally ripper jew 2.0

Why am I used as an insult? You've all seen me play, you know I'm not TOO bad.

Anyway, I used to really hate Ring of Aquila. Teammates would consider it as a late game core item and build it at 30-40 minutes. Because of that, I always saw it as a waste of gold and never got it, but now I see that it's really good for getting Agility carries online quickly. The stats are great early on and the mana regen is super helpful for heroes who go through a lot of mana in lane, like Troll, Medusa, and Weaver, without needing to buy stupid mana items. With Basilius, the rings fit a well-needed purpose that not many other early game items can do so easily.

I buy this on almost every hero but I hadn't thought about using that, thanks!

I go with pretty much any combination of these (though I random a lot so I can usually get most of them)

anyone who namefags makes them self a target to ridicule. The damage has been done.

>>3696

Why not keep the Basilius and build it into Vlads? I rarely use Aquila, it just seems a little…I dunno, wastey item slotty.

 No.3838

>>3837

I try not to end the game with Aquila, I make sure to sell it for something else later. Buying up to Vlad's is a bit more of a commitment and the point of Aquila is the cheap agility, armor, and mana regen for early game. I'll sometimes build Basilius into Vlad's, but more often I'll get Aquila.

 No.3943

>>3693

Early game is exactly that. It's a generally boring first few minutes.

 No.3957

>>3837

You can disassemble a ring of aquila so the vlads is still an option, but early on this is the item that gets agi heroes to go live. 15 damage, 3 str/int, 6 attack speed, almost 4 armor, plus some solid mana regen. Early game, Ring of Aquila is what switches you from a squishy meh damage hero into a decent damage dealer that can handle a beating. Lategame it's not necessary though.

>>3943

Early game is actually capable of some sick shit if you're willing to apply yourself.

 No.3987

I find that mangoes are really underused. Using on yourself and -especially- using on other people in your lane.

It's good for burst damage setups and for luring the enemy team in by appearing to be oom
