ITT: We help each other get better at Dota by answering questions and giving advice.

I've played quite a few games and I've come to form a general understanding of each hero, including their strengths and weaknesses. I'd like to use this thread to help newer players and hopefully make this board more active.

 No.630

Got rekt recently by a DP, shadow shaman, Lycan and undying.

How do you counter this? They started pushing at level 6 and didn't stop. Didn't help that I was playing weaver and couldn't even finish my linkens before they ended the game.

 No.636

>>630
That was actually pretty smart of them, but always try to make sure that you and the rest of your team are on your toes whenever pushers are picked. I don't think Weaver may not have been the best choice.

Assuming the 5th hero was an agility carry, your best lineup would have been something along the lines of this.

>Tiny, whose movement speed, nukes, disables and late-game pushing potential can spell trouble for Death Prophet and Shadow Shaman.

>Earthshaker, whose Fissure can stun Lycan and put a barrier between him and your towers. Echo Slam is also devastating to Shaman if you can use it while he's close to his serpent wards or against Lycan, assuming he buys a Necronomicon.
>Bane, whose long disables and heavily-damaging, mana-draining ultimate can ruin anyone's day. Enfeeble also greatly limits Lycan's DPS.
>Spirit Breaker, the bullshit space cow whose chain stuns will make Death Prophet and Shadow Shaman hate life.
>Luna, whose glaives turn powerful serpents into gold. She also has a great nuke/stun. Luna is able to carry and can push and farm very well in the late game. An alternative to Luna would be Faceless Void, whose Timelock can fuck up squishy heroes. Assuming Faceless has a reasonable amount of farm, he should be able to win any 1 on 1 fight with the enemy's lineup.

Gank with 2-3 heroes as early as possible. Jungle Lycan is an easy kill for Bane, who can take the mid lane efficiently, and an Earthshaker/Tiny combo can make the laning stage hell for the enemies. Spirit Breaker becomes a click-and-win hero when taking on a lone enemy, which gives him the ability to gank anyone on the enemy's team efficiently. Place a ward in front of Roshan's lair around the 10:00-12:00 mark, since Lycan is able to solo Roshan fairly early on.

Undying is a little harder to counter than the others, but he's only powerful when there are many units around him. Because of this, never choose heroes like Nature's Prophet or Broodmother, who can make Undying's role much easier. The best time to attack Undying is when he's out of lane with no creeps around to strengthen him.

 No.645

>>630
naga would be a good counter to that lineup cuz they'd wanna group up, push towers and force team fights.

 No.655

>>645
I wouldn't be so quick to say that. Earthshaker's Echo Slam considers illusions as heroes, making him a direct counter. Luna's glaives and Tiny's AOE nukes and eventual cleave will also make it easy to spot the real Naga. The team has a great amount of disables to pick off Naga before she can use her ultimate.

Shit, my bad. Was on mobile when I posted >>655 and it looked like it was directed at me.

 No.657

I was just playing a game as timber, I ended up going 13-2 beyond godlike but my team feed so much we still lost. This way I will never get 4k mmr how do I fix this or any tips or something?

 No.658

I find tiny really difficult, It seems like I can't solo kill people as him, but against tiny I get blown out.

 No.659

>>657
Being forced to play with bad teammates is the biggest flaw Dota 2, and unfortunately, there's nothing you can do to change how well your teammates do.

What people often forget is that pushing is what was the game. It's good that you got a great K/D, but getting a thousand kills doesn't matter if you can't push towers.

In the case of MMR, you'll have to be a cheap bastard to get a good ranking. If you know that you will do well every game, your best option is to always choose a cheap herk like Ursa, Huskar, or my personal favorite, Lycan.

I once played a match where my team had one kill and 14 deaths by the time I finished soloing Roshan as Lycan. My team was getting stomped into the ground and we lost most of our towers within the first few minutes. As soon as I got the aegis, I entered the teamfight and went Godlike with an untra kill before pushing through their entire base and winning the game.

Again, you didn't do anything wrong, but pushing is what wins the game, which is something Timbersaw isn't excellent at.

 No.660

>>658
Practice makes perfect. If you really want to learn how to do well with Tiny, I'd suggest playing a few bot matches. Pulling off a flawless combo can take a while, so oblivious bots can give you multiple attempts at pulling it off. Remember that not every hero is for everyone, so don't fret if things don't work out with Tiny, there are over 100 other heroes to try to master.

Tiny works best when he has a partner, preferably someone who doesn't mind being in the middle of a battle. He depends very heavily on performing combos in the early game. If you don't use hotkeys, I suggest getting used to it, since Tiny is almost IMPOSSIBLE to use otherwise. Depending on the situation, 1, click, 2 click or 2, click, 1 click will be all you have to do to get it down.

Tiny's armor is extremely low in the early game, so unless you intend on getting a kill, never go far from your tower and try to keep at least one teammate near you.

 No.661

>>660
>if you don't use hotkeys, i suggest getting used to it

Are there people who do not use hotkeys, as in clicking each ability individually? or do you mean quickcast?

 No.664

>>661
Hotkeys, although quickcast could be helpful with Tiny, I personally don't use it and tend to forget about it.

From personal experience, I had never used hotkeys for abilities when I had first started playing. Yeah, it may seem obvious to use hotkeys, but it's such a huge deal-breaker for Tiny that I have to mention it. It wasn't until I had first used him that I started using hotkeys.

 No.668

>>659
Well I get 2 or more people that go 1-2 kills and 10-15 deaths.
In 20 minutes, ofcourse by the time it's 20 minutes we lost all our outer towers because they just mindlessly walk in and die.
Biggest issue is I am not the best carry player. Offlane and support alright but not carry

 No.670

>>668
Give it a try first. None of the heroes I mentioned are very hard to use, Timbersaw is much harder than all of them. Don't think of yourself as a carry, just make pushing your top priority and your team will stand a much better chance. Since the heroes I mentioned are all Strength (Ursa is agility, but plays more like a strength hero and has higher strength gain), don't be afraid to get into the enemy's face.

>>659 is right you fucking pleblords you can gain thousands of free MMR by playing cheap fucking heroes that wreck havoc once they have 1-3 core items, e.g. vlads and blink on ursa = autowin in ANY ranked pub for me thats around 2k-4.5kMMR

URSA is a cheap fucking hero and if you can play ursa and get rosh at around the 4-10min mark and have blink, vlads and brown or phase boots by 15-20 mins you WIN THE FUCKING GAME, cause people rarely counterpick with say PA or TA or silencer and if they do you build the appropriate items e.g. MKB/BKB or whatever the fuck you want

 No.1029

Any advice I can get on timing? What's the general advice for when to leave your lane and gank, push etc?

Also, any advice on facing an already-fed Riki? As someone that almost exclusively plays mid, he's never been my problem until fairly far in the game when it's too late.

 No.1032

>>1029
There's no set 'time' where you should do certain things, since every match is different. You have to be able to tell when's the right time for what. That's what Dota is all about. Generally, for heroes who specialize in ganking, you typically want to start ganking once you hit level 6 or 7, if you need to max out an ability first. If an opportunity comes up, you can gank sooner, sure. For Tiny with the traditional build, level 8 is a good time to start ganking. Vengeful Spirit might want to wait until level 11. Earthshaker might want to get arcane boots or a blink dagger first. There are a lot of variables that make it hard to say when is the perfect time. Pushing is a bit more straight-forward. Unless you're not ready to leave your tower, if your enemies are roaming, push. You'll find small opportunities every so often to do a little damage to a tower, which adds up and can often make winning easier.

Unfortunately, Riki is a carry, and snowballing into the late game is just what he does. There isn't a whole lot you can do once he gets the farm he needs, so while you've probably already heard it a million times, do what you can to kick his ass in the early game. If you're constantly having problems with Riki players, the best thing to do is ask your teammates to choose a hero who can counter him, such as Slardar, Bounty Hunter, Axe, or Bristleback, or anyone with silence (if they're smart, they'll repick, saving you the trouble all together). Death Prophet is a good choice for you, since she fairs very well in the mid lane and has a long AOE silence that can easily find Riki, same goes for Silencer, of course. Other mid heroes are often great gankers, so find opportunities to kill him in the laning stage. Make sure your team sticks together in all stages of the game and ask teammates to stock up on invisibility detection, preferrably Dust of Appearance. Never attack while in Riki's smokescreen, find your quickest way out before retaliating Because the smokescreen slows and you have to turn away from Riki to get out of it, you might want to consider getting a Force Staff on appropriate heroes. As you clock more play time, you'll start seeing Riki less often, rest assured, but I know how much of a pain in the ass he is.

 No.1034

>>1029

Easiest way to avoid getting rekt by any of those crazy snowballing heroes (Riki, huskar, ursa, etc.) is to 5 man.

If you're team groups up as 5 at 10-15 min and just pushes down a lane, you no longer run the risk of dying solo in jungle to a riki, and I can guarantee you that if you're in a lower bracket, that riki player will either dive straight into the middle of your team and instantly die, or be too scared to help his team and they will lose the fight 4v5.

Any time the enemy team has something annoying like a clinkz, invoker, storm spirit with an orchid you always want to have at least 2 people together at all times. If you're alone in the jungle or in a lane – even if you're close to your tower – you are susceptible to getting picked off.

Don't be afraid to communicate with your team. It doesn't matter if you're 2k mmr or 5k mmr. People do stupid things unless you tell them otherwise.

How do you guys have your item hotkeys set up?
I'm using quickcast, and have them set up to use my two extra mouse button, and alt + w, e, s, d, . But I'm looking for something new.

 No.1059

>>1056
I'm not very happy with the way I have my hotkeys set up, but I'm currently using WASD for camera, Q to deny, 1-4 for abilities, E for heroes with fifth abilities, Spacebar to select summon units, Caps lock to voice chat (it's been a pain in the ass) and ZXCVBN for items.

 No.1060

>>1059
Huh. That's different.

I guess I should have mentioned I'm using 1 to level up, 2 to level stats, and QWER for abilities and then the aforementioned Alt + WESD.

It's also weird. I might give yours a try.

 No.1063

>>1056

QWER, T and mouse 4 for sub abilities (i never play heroes that require more than 5 abilities).

space d f c v x for items. Space is always boots, C is always wand, X is always TP. D/F main actives like bkb, blink, force, etc.

 No.1064

>>1060
It's weird, I know, but I like it more than Alt keys. Of course, I try to keep my active items to just ZXCV so I don't have to reach very far to use them. Otherwise, everything is right around my camera keys. I don't have keys for leveling abilities and stats, so I manually click on the button to use my points and then click on what I want to level, mostly because I feel like the number of keys I'm able to use is too limited for little things like that.

Wait so do you use edge panning or anything mouse related for camera or just use wasd?

I use G for select hero but you could swap that out for mouse 4 so your abilities are qwer t g if you play invoker or earth spirit

 No.1079

I use edge panning, yeah, but mostly WASD. I feel like I need the freedom of being able to move the camera with both of my hands. I've never really thought about it, but I know that I wouldn't be able to play otherwise. It's hard for me to explain.

 No.1101

>>1079
I guesss the argument for more precise camera control is there.

Kinda related: when trying to run back away on the radiant side I tend to click the minimap by mistake and run forward. Is that something you'll get used to or should I go ahead and switch it t9 the other side?

 No.1102

>>1101

You get used to it pretty fast.

If you haven't already, go into your mouse settings in the windows control panel and uncheck "Enhance Pointer Precision" in the pointer options tab. This is mouse acceleration, and is the bane of every gamer's existence. If you had it on, it's going to feel really awkward for a few days, but it becomes normal REALLY quickly.

Alternatively, you can mess with the dota_minimap_misclick_time (?) cvar and make it a little higher (like 0.3 or 0.4). This will ignore anything you do on the minimap unless your mouse has been on the map for at least that amount of time. I don't suggest this because it makes some stuff you do globally a pain in the ass, but it is an option if you aren't willing to move your minimap.

Does adding a level to any of Techies' mine skills increase the damage of mines that you've already placed?

 No.3899

>>3898

No, but to add to this, will Bloodseeker's Bloodrage on Techies amplify the damage of his mines? I don't think so, but I thought I'd ask.

 No.3900

>>3899

>>3898

Mines are considered their own units for a lot of things. For example, blademail considers the mines to be the source of the damage, so they do not affect techies. For the compendium last hit challenges, last hits gained through mines do not count towards the challenge counter. It is weird. Bloodrage does not increase mine dmg.

 No.3903

>>3899

Would it work with suicide?

 No.3905

>>3903

No. Bloodrage doesn't amp spell damage, only auto attack damage. Unless you mean the lifesteal aspect, which does not matter since the mines are the unit doing the damage. Suicide doesn't do self-damage, it just kills you.
