I totally agree. And I will do that. I'm just unsure wich direction would be interesting to do that with. I'm kinda hesitant between the maiyan, knight, shaolin monk and the viking/barbarian one.Since I like all those ideas but obviously can't make all of them.So Im kinda looking around for some input to see what's interesting to people so i can push more in that direction.

looking good here. Be careful with your neck on the bottom left for the faces.jpeg. The shoulder/trapezius is too low/zebra neck.

I really dig the pyrite. Looks like a pretty good way to practice form as well. To challenge yourself you could try to light it with a single lightsource maybe?

I really dig any humanoid creature designs in general, so you got me good there. Your hands are pretty wonky though, especially on the guy on the left. I would recommend some studies eventually.

The grass is kind of pulling the eye away from everything else. You could change the hue so it's more blueish, same darkness. The figure will still read in this scenario, which is probably what you want.

Individual study thread

Post studies of various kinds; tonal studies, color studies, compositional studies, portrait studies, anatomy studies, etc. Experimentation with methods and brushes, imagination or ref'd, are also acceptable.

Help others study and find more efficient ways to study through feedback.

Please make sure your posted image is clear and is under 1500 x 1500 pixels in size.

It would be useful to use the multi-image function to submit multiple studies at once.

Remember that there is analyzing(studying), and then there is copying. Both is permitted, but know the difference.

These are nice, but you can be a bit more decisive with things. Get the shapes in clearly and simply, be a bit more bold with the decisions and colours and such. They look good but…safe and boring. Even if it is a study there are many decisions that you can make–try to have a focus somehow to the study, maybe emphasize the colours, or the scale, or the edges.

So, I figured we should make a thread for brainstorming ideas for all-new threads, and ideas for already existing group participation threads.

For now, we can brainstorm masters for another master study thread, and other ideas are welcome.

And a new thread I would like to create, being the 'Subject of the Week' thread. For a week we'd draw, study, paint, or design(using the 'subject' in some way). Gaining knowledge/information of the subject, and developing skill in its utilization being the primary goal.

Sounds interesting. For no cheating, you could include things like no warping/distortion tool, no auto-tone/levels/filters. Do you want to make a new thread for each challenge, or keep them all in one thread? At least for now it seems collective threads would be better, since we're not going to see any 404's for a while,.

So, I'm really thinking about making an 'everydays' thread. If nobody else is interested, I will probably start one anyways for myself and let others join over time.

It's a really great idea I think, and this isn't the first time I've done this sort of thing. Though the ideas I feel are pretty good for this one, and keeps it from being a bullshitting thing. I think it could really work if we had at least 3 people interested in posting their everydays in an 'everydays' thread.

Speedpainting and the other wip threads will still be there, but I think the idea of the 'everyday' deserves its own threads, as well as the other ones. Spending the amount of time you have available that night doing the everyday, rather than stopping when you have satisfied the 'speedpainting' level could be quite beneficial. And also each poster can have their own specific goals for a set of everydays, so it's not limited to any medium either, so it will also be an all-medium-welcome thread.

Do you guys know the roll threads across the board culture? Like the towergirls thing, for ex. Img related.

I'm trying to make a thread where you can roll for vehicle, landscape, human anatomy, animal anatomy, or fantasy subjects. This way we can learn more about the world visually and with more breadth. But first, I need to create a list of subjects. I've created a spreadsheet here.

Would appreciate any help https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JsJoNOzgO8Vz3ljjJlzDI-l52Gq2QIp9e_eydziK8tQ/edit#gid=0

We can go up to 99 for each category, I think. And it can be something we/or I grow over time, too.

The whole thing of rolling for a random number doesn't work so well on a board where the number of posts per day hovers around like 2. It becomes pretty darn predictable what number you'll get.

Hello everyone, and scragglers that might still be lurking.

I'm at odds for whether we really do need discussion threads. I decided to do this in the first place to make a more focused board, but if it means there will be little to no activity, then there's no point.

On top of that, there is no artboard on 8chan with user IDs, so it will be interesting to allow discussion to make use of it in this way.

What do you guys think? Tell me your vision and thoughts regarding allowing discussion threads, and other things too related.

Just to clarify, what are ban-able offenses? Perma-bans?

ee0793 No.361

>>357

Unreasonable, intentional, and repeated shitposting/trolling will get the user's posts deleted, and they will be banned for 3 days.

Repeated moderate-intensity shitposting in one thread will get a user a 1-day temp-ban, and their shitposts will be deleted. Repeating this offense will raise the temp-ban duration by 1-day.

Spamming, posting that is not board-related will get you a 3-day ban. If a user repeats this offense 3 times, perma-ban.

I don't really want to use perma-bans on posters that can potentially contribute. And if someone is toxic enough to earn temp-bans over and over, they're probably going to be able to avoid perma-bans anyway.

I think discussion threads should be allowed mate, they help clear things up for beginners/shite artists like me.

899ce7 No.404

>>399

When you're transitioning between planes like that, I would have it slightly darker at the terminator/where the light side ends, just as an effect to help the form read more.

This is the 4-value simplification thing, right? It can be tough to know which value to choose. But I think it's a good idea to choose what will help the lighting read better. For example, in the first one, have the hair on the top of the head be the 3 value instead of the 4 value, so that it be more understandable that the hair below is in shadow.

overall I like the eyes in the second one way better. The gradation in the eyes you added in the first one i don't think really helps.

In the second one, as I said I really think the eyes are well done. The lips may have been better with a darker value, though. I do think you're overdoing it with the generic highlights on the chin and the cheek. The forms and surface are different there than the nose, highlights/specular reflections happen a lot differently there if at all. Though overall a solid simplification in the second one; another thing you could have done is use the 4 value for the cast shadow or occlusion shadow under the chin, but I think it works the way you have it as well.

372733 No.405

>>404

Thanks for the critique, anon! I'll grind out a couple of studies and attempt this again. 4 value simplification is a bit difficult, but it's worth trying to master.

Hm, so I'm a bit lost as to whether this deserves its own thread, but what the hell I think it is a bit different than the other threads here, and I'd like to get into the habit of doing these daily, so having a dedicated thread might help me with it.

So, post your speedpaintings here! What is a speedpainting? Well I don't want to lay in any restrictions really…so I will say a good part of hte decision is up to you and your own beliefs. Typically a speedpainting might take 20 minute to 2 hours or so, but this is very flexible, and again depends on your own definition. I'd also like to say it should probably be mostly from imagination (it is not just a quick study, but rather a quick illustration) and while the use of photos is okay, don't let that take over your image. You can use reference too, but don't copy too much. Try to avoid quick doodles or scribbles as well…yes it is quick, but that doesn't mean you don't put any effort into it! Is that enough ruleless rules? hehe, post away!

Forgot to post this yesterday haha, this one was really out of my comfort zone and I fucked it up a bit. Trying to design, paint perspective, paint new subject matter, and try new painting techniques all at once…in the end I couldn't juggle it all, and even somehow managed to mess up the values which is the ultimate sin in my book! I feel like you can get away (sorta) with screwing up ONE aspect of a painting, so I usually let the drawing slide a bit but make sure I get the values and mood and other things right…in this case I screwed up both the drawing and the value so it is not working well…plus my visual library for sci fi stuff is so limited the image is pretty bare.

My opinion:

So the values are a bit patchy in yours and the local value of his skin is becoming a bit ambiguous. You always want to maintain the local value, so don't go too extreme with highlights and such. The original photo has some of the same issue to a degree, but you've gone and made the problem worse rather than corrected it. It's a little tricky because there is a lot of light in the photo and his skin has some general specular qualities to it so the shine throws off the value read–all the more reason to be careful with how you handle it.

I did a super quick paintover, hope you don't mind. First I used a darken layer and just slapped a middle value on it to unify the overall read of local values. From this middle base, I then was able to bring back some of hte highlights carefully, as well as craft in the dark shapes more carefully. For example, in the photo the dude's eyes are the first place I look–they are intense and large, so getting the character of them correctly is important in getting the likeness. I just did it sloppy and quick, but it is a bit closer I think,

3336df No.280

>>278

Ahh!! Thank you so much!

You've definitely made it look better (and I obviously like it more with unified values). I think I will try out this darken layer myself as a way to 'soft-reset' my pictures if my values/highlights are getting out of hand.

I didn't realize how the proportion of the eyes/pupils can make such a huge difference. It definitely does a huge amount in changing the structure of the face, and the likeness.

A lot of things are running through my mind when I'm doing these studies, and especially doing it in 1hr makes me think about the essential things to do. I was thinking to myself "what would this person look like in real life." Half-way through I started to see form, and planes, a lot more than usual.

However, turns out I made it worse than the photo, because I lost the local value as you said. But you've given me a good tip for that.. and that's to not do that!

I'm going to do some more of these soon, trying out the things you said.

Cool, glad you managed to take something from my comment :)

And now for me going against my own words and fucking shit up into a mess hehe. Trying out some new things, painting without pressure etc. In the end I did a bit of soft brush on top to help the forms cause it looked like crap. Also unsuccessfully tried to get some posterization and dissolve into it…the dissolve stuff I removed but I think can maybe have some neat effects in other things. Gotta figure it all out and experiment more! I think posterization has some powerful potential, but it messes up the colours, so maybe just use it for selections to create interesting shapes? I dunno, more work needed in that avenue….

We can make an activity out of making banners for /dpd/. The max is 50, and I made like 3 already(but not of my own art yet).

They're 300 px wide and 100px tall. They need to be less than 500kb in size.

Rather than taking favorite paintings, we can create our own paintings, or take some of our old paintings, to make the banners. It would be pretty cool to have banners made from user artwork.

Wip 2 finish thread

Post your wips that you intend to finish here, and give feedback and critique on other wips.

Please make sure your posted image is clear and is under 1500 x 1500 pixels in size.

Do not submit multiple wips per post in this thread; for that, post in the casual wip thread.

Want some critique on the composition, values, anything you want to point out is fine too.

Apparently 8ch messes up the values of the thumbnail view. Make sure to view it in another window.

I think the values on the thumbnail looks better, maybe put a more contrast on it?
