Master Study General

For our first master study thread, I decided to start with Sargent, the master of light and color.

The Metropolitan Museum has a great website with high-rez artwork, so for this type of thread, if the artist you have in mind is on it, use it! But it's not a requirement.

I picked two sargents you could try, but if you don't like either of them, you can find your own Sargent to paint. Here are the links:

http://www.metmuseum.org/collection/the-collection-online/search/12071

http://www.metmuseum.org/collection/the-collection-online/search/12028

The way you study is up to you! You can zoom in and get a better look at Sargent's brushstrokes, and paint just a portion of the image; or you can study the overall image.

(The images attached to this post are smaller portions of the painting!)

EDIT:

This is now Master Study General. We will continue more master studies in this thread, rather than making new ones.

Beginners Thread

I think it's time for a beginners thread now. If you're new to drawing, or intimated by the level of art elsewhere, you can post here.

I also want to make it clear that you aren't restricted to this area, and when group participation threads come along, you should consider joining them as well.

Figuredrawing Thread

Post your figure-drawings and gestures here

These are from a NMA life-drawing video on youtube.
R: 14 / I: 14 / P: 1

Group Study Thread

In this thread we'll do non-portrait, non-master studies. Rather than making new threads, we'll keep putting new studies in this thread over time.

Road to CTN Expo

So I've been contemplating this and decided that having a dedicated thread for my personal project would be a good way to document my progress and get feedback. This board is slow enough that I don't have to worry about my thread dying as well.

In order to get off ass and finally make a portfolio to shop, I'm taking the next four months to build a vis dev portfolio for animation culminating in the expo. This will be similar to the everyday thread, just with a deadline.

Everyday Thread

A thread for posting everydays. Anyone who would like to join me is free to.

See >>286 for info on the everydays.

Some rules I want to establish for myself. I'll keep these rules for myself for a month, and in that month I'll be focusing on just making illustrations, solving problems in painting/drawing, and gaining some mileage in starting pictures:

-Deadline for the 'everyday' at midnight.

-Do everything I need to do before it.

-Try to make illustrations that are interesting to me

-Consult reference if necessary to get the painting to a desired level

I don't see any Art Deco thread.

Is it accepted or what?

wip thread

post your WIPs in here!

pics related are for brainstorm group. c&c greatly appreciated

Individual Study Thread

Individual study thread

Post studies of various kinds; tonal studies, color studies, compositional studies, portrait studies, anatomy studies, etc. Experimentation with methods and brushes, imagination or ref'd, are also acceptable.

Help others study and find more efficient ways to study through feedback.

Please make sure your posted image is clear and is under 1500 x 1500 pixels in size.

It would be useful to use the multi-image function to submit multiple studies at once.

Remember that there is analyzing(studying), and then there is copying. Both is permitted, but know the difference.

Thread Creation Discussion

So, I figured we should make a thread for brainstorming ideas for all-new threads, and ideas for already existing group participation threads.

For now, we can brainstorm masters for another master study thread, and other ideas are welcome.

And a new thread I would like to create, being the 'Subject of the Week' thread. For a week we'd draw, study, paint, or design(using the 'subject' in some way). Gaining knowledge/information of the subject, and developing skill in its utilization being the primary goal.

Do you guys want discussion threads to be allowed?

Hello everyone, and scragglers that might still be lurking.

I'm at odds for whether we really do need discussion threads. I decided to do this in the first place to make a more focused board, but if it means there will be little to no activity, then there's no point.

On top of that, there is no artboard on 8chan with user IDs, so it will be interesting to allow discussion to make use of it in this way.

What do you guys think? Tell me your vision and thoughts regarding allowing discussion threads, and other things too related.

Casual WipThread

Post wips done casually, which you probably won't continue.

Give feedback and critique on others' wips. Help others see what is salvageable in their trash.

Please make sure your posted image is clear and is under 1500 x 1500 pixels in size.

Speedpaint Thread

Hm, so I'm a bit lost as to whether this deserves its own thread, but what the hell I think it is a bit different than the other threads here, and I'd like to get into the habit of doing these daily, so having a dedicated thread might help me with it.

So, post your speedpaintings here! What is a speedpainting? Well I don't want to lay in any restrictions really…so I will say a good part of hte decision is up to you and your own beliefs. Typically a speedpainting might take 20 minute to 2 hours or so, but this is very flexible, and again depends on your own definition. I'd also like to say it should probably be mostly from imagination (it is not just a quick study, but rather a quick illustration) and while the use of photos is okay, don't let that take over your image. You can use reference too, but don't copy too much. Try to avoid quick doodles or scribbles as well…yes it is quick, but that doesn't mean you don't put any effort into it! Is that enough ruleless rules? hehe, post away!

Portrait Study General

Rather than making a new portrait study thread for every image, let's just put it all in this thread. After an extended period of time, just reboot the thread with another study.

Anyways, here's a photo that was posted on /ic/ recently. I'll be doing a study of it.

Thumbnail Thread

Thumbnail thread

Post thumbnails or early idea generation. The idea of this thread is to get user input for illustrations early on.

Give feedback/critique on thumbnails and help others find their best thumbnails.

Please make sure your posted image is clear and is under 1500 x 1500 pixels in size.
R: 4 / I: 4 / P: 2

Banner creation thread

We can make an activity out of making banners for /dpd/. The max is 50, and I made like 3 already(but not of my own art yet).

They're 300 px wide and 100px tall. They need to be less than 500kb in size.

Rather than taking favorite paintings, we can create our own paintings, or take some of our old paintings, to make the banners. It would be pretty cool to have banners made from user artwork.

Wip 2 Finish Thread

Wip 2 finish thread

Post your wips that you intend to finish here, and give feedback and critique on other wips.

Please make sure your posted image is clear and is under 1500 x 1500 pixels in size.

Do not submit multiple wips per post in this thread; for that, post in the casual wip thread.
