Hm, I'll have to see about posting some life drawing a bit later…

>>98
These look pretty nice, but it's really hard to see with the way they are all creased and patchy lighting on the paper. Can you get better pics of them? Hard to crit when you can't see it well.

>>99
The texture brushes you are using aren't helping at all and just muddle the readability, especially in the shape based ones. I like most of the top row and the first one in the second row.

>>102
Ridiculously good digital lines, so clean and accurate, especially given how fast some of them are done. Very nice proportions and weight, and I love how well you quickly indicate complex things like fingers. Might be good to draw through forms more though? I dunno, you rely on 2d observation a fair bit in some places, so I wonder how well you can draw these from imagination. Then again, the forms read really well so maybe it's nothing. Post more :)

>>111
Great sense of weight in these. I have a soft spot for the directness of charcoal like this. I think your line confidence and just general markmaking can use a lot of improvement, not sure what to say about it though other than keep drawing a lot and it will improve with experience, and just be aware of it and try to make nice marks.

I don't go to life drawing often enough to grind off the constant rust, but here is some stuff from the past couple months when I have gone more than in the past like two years.

Gonna do a few posts. The poses range from 2 to 20 minutes.

I'm guessing you are talking to me since the reply is right after my image dump…so uhm, no I didn't study Bargue. Or well I have a bit, but not in the way that modern ateliers copy it (which I think is misguided and dumb). I've only done a few studies of Bargue and they were a long time ago and quick things. I think I learned most about figure drawing from Bridgman. But I also studied a fair bit of other resources–lots of Peck, some Vilppu, lots of Kevin Chen, some Hampton, a decent amount of Reilly stuff, some Vanderpoel, some Hogarth, some Mentler, a bit of Bammes uhhh probably then another half dozen names I studied a tiny bit. I dunno, I have looked at lots of approaches and studied a bit from each, and of course drawn from life a lot. But TONS of Bridgman, he really clicked the most with me and taught me a lot, and for actual anatomical stuff Peck taught me the most.

>>144
Looks good! As you say, there are a few wonky parts where it looks like you jumped to details and rendering before fully ensuring the larger mass was put in proportionately and accurately. Since you are aware of these things on your own, you will go far :)

Got around to photographing last week's life drawing. Blegh, not happy with them. I can't ever stick to one thing, so I end up switching media and approaches like every pose. Plus the model was really bad, doing dumb poses then not being able to hold them properly so either stopping early or just moving like crazy and the pose would literally completely change during it. I know, excuses….excuses….anyways, poses were from 2 to about 15 minutes long? A-at least the noobs that go to life drawing in my city were impressed, r-right guys? I had a swarm of them flocking my sketchbook after it was over and asking me questions. Then getting disappointed when I am like "I literally took a different method/approach on every drawing I did tonight".

>>172
>>173
These are nice but you are losing sight of proportions a bit in a few of those. Like figure5.jpg the leg on our right looks too small.

>>180
Nice, but the shadows aren't adding anything really, if anything they just confuse stuff. Try to lay in cleaner shapes and simplify more. Maybe use a soft brush or smudge tool too in a few places to help turn the form a bit rather than a hard messy grey shape.

>>211
Proportions look pretty good to me, maybe a few heads are small but otherwise they look fine. The bigger issue is on the 15 minute poses you lose a lot fo the life and gesture that you managed to capture in the shorter ones.

I took what you said into consideration and did some shorter poses. I think that when I start a longer pose my brain freaks out and tries to do it differently instead of just doing it the saw way I do it for the gestures, except just take it further. I think they are still a little stiff but maybe a little better.

Friday's life drawings, first time I think drawing a pregnant woman and it was fun. I really enjoy using pen with no underdrawing, it keeps your senses sharp constantly since there is little room for error and you need to observe really closely, but then you also want to keep a bit loose and not get too stiff. I think the poses are 2m, 5m, and 15m.

>>216
These do have a good sense of structure to them. I think this approach of using boxes works well for you.

>>219
Yeah it seems your longer poses you just add a bunch of smaller lumps and lines and such and lose sight of hte big picture. Not sure what to say really, maybe just try to do some even longer ones and really observe. Don't be afraid too to use some 2d observation to help correct your 3d forms. Studying more anatomy can't hurt either.

>>229
These are nice yeah. For the charcoal pencil one, be careful of making shapes too messy, I think slowing down a bit and getting things in a bit cleaner would be nice. And then on the sanguine one the texture is a bit distracting…I think just using your finger or a rag and smudging some areas would be nice. It would just remove the texture where you rub and get a smooth gradation. Obviously this can easily be overdone, but in just a few key areas it can work well I think.

Mine are kinda old, but 1 from a figure drawing session and the rest from a costumed fig drawing session. I feel like I got confused by the clothing, and I didn't pay enough attention to gesture, but I'm really excited to attend the next one for sure.

Thanks for the kind words! Those gradations are easy with newsprint and conte :P

Your stuff is nice, I really like the simple line ones, like that's what I try to get with my quick things. Just capture the main forms and rhythms clearly with only a few marks. So good. The charcoal things are a bit…clunkier? I dunno, they are stiffer and feel kinda heavy or dirty with the values. White chalk is a dangerous thing imo. I think it works best when used very sparingly and isn't mixed with things much. And then I think you are doing lots of work in the midtones, with lots of smudging. Maybe doing a simpler more planar approach might help? they're certainly not bad, but they don't appeal to me as much as your quick line sketches.

>>333

Thanks! And nice stuff! I like the brushpen, especially the drawing with the leg raised (on a treasure chest?). Lucky you get costumes and stuff like that, they don't have it in my city at all.

As you say, sometimes the drapery isn't shown that well. I think simplifying it and thinking a lot of the weight and where it drapes off or pulls to would help. Also I realize they are quick and the focus in on the costume, but a couple of the faces are a bit of symbol drawing type things and rather flat.

Checked out a gesture drawing website today cause its been too long since I've done it. Used a site caled quick poses and I was somewhat happy with their collection of photos. I thought the photos had a lot of energy but you begin to see the same pose over and over after a few photos. Another thing I noticed was the poses were in general very simple. I would have liked more of a challenge but overall I'm not too displeased. If anyone knows of any better sites I'd like to check them out. I did this drawing in under a minute for those curious
