Welcome to Drawfag Academy! This is a place where both novice and seasoned drawtards can come and present their works to all to be criticized or to inspire others, or for any reason. All you need to join is to post something you've drawn recently.
I'm starting this academy because I want to learn to draw. Quite frankly, I suck. I also saw that many people on this board are here to pick up tips on how to get better. I thought that having a dedicated thread where people can showcase and critique their work would be a great place to do this. I also thought it would be great if an experienced drawfag would be a headmaster of sorts, but I didn't want to wait around for that person to show up, so I'm doing it myself. As you can see, I'm not very good at drawing myself. This was done with a graphite
uni kuru toga pencil. I don't have a scanner, so I took a picture with my phone. If you're like me, then you might feel tentative and embarrassed about displaying your work for anyone to see, but until we improve, we just have to deal with it. I'm also heavily left brained, so don't feel discouraged!
If you're at a loss on what to draw, there are plenty of requests floating around on this board. Just find one and start drawing. Don't even think about it, just do it! You don't even have to show it to the requester if you don't want, just post it here to fill the halls of our great academy. It would also be appreciated if you share any resources you may come across online that gives tips and advice on how to improve. Mark Crilley's YouTube channel is a good example

>>556I'm really self conscious about my drawings, I can't seem to free draw for my life, though I can copy off other drawings okay, if they're not 3D, I usually mess up.
I'm kinda at a lost on how to get guud, everywhere I go its a different answer.
So I'm in the same boat as you!

Try doing simple little exercises drawing with your arm. I didn't really do that, but I evolved into using my arm more eventually. You ought to just make it a habit ASAP to save yourself a lot of wrist pain.

If you're still here… There's something informative about watching pro's do their thing. Watch Chuck Jones draw:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlpRoyjX-mQHe draws the important contrasts (having already internalized the type of constructive 'volume' drawing you would learn in the loomis pdf), he makes mistakes, and just reiterates new marks over the mistakes. Example: Look at bugs cheek on the left of the paper.

Video on learning. Also check out this guys other videos on drawing excercises. He's pretty damn smart and well rounded.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJtriGiRJzEHe also has some interesting software that can rank your accuracy drawing particular kinds of strokes. You can find links to it on his tumblr:
http://le-mec.tumblr.com/ and perhaps donate since the concept of software assisted drawing practice is very cool and should be expanded upon.

I also added a hands and feet design sheet to help people who cant draw them (i know i did when starting out and sometimes still do)
Hope this lot helps!

-Side note buy some design books from shows or movies i have the dragon ball art book and its served well as a reference guide for that style.

For real models doing various poses in HD there is this youtube channel:

Man, I've been gone a while. Video games are more enticing than drawing.
>>560That's an awesome resource, and I did a few heads following those instructions. I'll continue some more another time.
The second pic is something I found that I did about six years ago. I don't think the physical version exists anymore. That rose is the best looking thing I've ever created.
Anyway, criticisms, tips, advice, lay it on me.

>>839Once you feel comfortable doing more careful copies, you can also check for errors you didn't see by using software like krita and overlaying your drawing on top of the original. You might opt to use a scanner though, since a photograph distorts your drawing.
One thing I did that helped with construction lines was drawing stuff on a transparent water bottle. You can observe the way a line wraps around the front and back. Take pictures if it helps.
In the mean time, just keep at it with the book.

G'day mates!
I was hoping someone could help me out with a bit of a dilemma. I look at a figure, and I know something's off, but I can't tell exactly what.
Pleased for to ignore the chicken scratch comrade.
I doubt it's the best way to go about it, but the way I had planned to scribble for now was "Chicken scratch until I am happy with proportions, then blow up the image and do solid lines." I'm working on using solid lines from the get-go, but for this image in particular I am doing what I am used to.
Something about the guy on the lefts proportions just seem off to me (ignoring the head, it's meant to be large and almost blocky). Ultimately I will 'dress' them in thick vests and whatever other military gear I shall dare to draw but, I want to get his proportions right damnit.
Any suggestions/help? The girl on the right I'm unsure about also. Thoughts?

Trying to get better at drawing. Eventually came out with this. I need to know what to fix on this.
The reason the picture is so pixelated is because this is just the head shot of the full picture but its all i have done so far.

Generally speaking, just make her a little rounder/curvier, draw the lines softer. Thin should be a little bony. That makes it easy to show different shapes. Belly's are actually optional, as not everyone has a body type that puts much fat in their belly.

My theory ATM: if my drawings aren't messy and shitty, I'm probably not learning anything. I think it's because the brain grows from stress and failure. (failure from struggle, as opposed to failure from being lazy)

You can only be good at drawing once you learn to visualize every single reference you can get including your own body portion into drawing.
Try measure everything like, for instance take your palm and put it in your face and measure it how big a human hand should be in a ratio of your head. Same goes to your arm length, your torso, legs, put your hand on them and stretch your palm by measuring from your thumb to you pinky finger.
As for feet, imagine if you have to stomp someone of your size in the face, how big does human foot be in term of ratio from his face. Every single measurement make sense.
