Teaching Other People Programming

Hi /edu/ , I'm teaching a group of students how to program. Each student has something that they are learning for, including game and website creation. If anybody has any tips on teaching, I would appreciate it. They are also using 'CodeAcademy' on the side, but they're not very motivated and a couple of the students are not very intelligent.

At the moment we are writing Python, I chose this language because it is extremely simple, and it makes explaining the patterns and features in programming really easy. We are going to move into C#, because of it's use in Unity, or Actionscript 3, because some students need to learn it for their ICT class. If anyone has any better ideas, I would appreciate that as well.

Thanks.

Have you guys figured out what gravity is yet?

…because I'm still hearing talks about a "graviton" particle.

Guys, there's no "graviton particle". It's all just simple magnetism:

Through velocity electrostatic friction, every planet gains two magnetic poles. All particles align to the opposite of this magnetic field, and is attracted.

You can reverse gravity by simply strapping a very huge electromagnet underneath an aircraft (with its north pole pointing toward the planet south pole). (Of course, keeping it from spinning 180 and crashing, would be practically impossible, but if you had strong enough thrusters and a fast guidance system, I bet it would allow for some pretty sharp turns.)

I hope we learned something today.

How to study effectively for history exams

Hey /edu/, what's the best way to study for a history exam? I have university finals in 5 weeks and need to remember tons of content on:

>World war I

>Germany from the birth of the Weimar republic to the Third Reich

>World war II in Europe

>Leni Riefenstahl

>I also need quotes from historians and enough information about the historiography of these events to incorporate this into my essays

Also, general european history discussion thread.

Repairing your attention span

How does one go about repairing a damaged attention span? I used to be able to read a good book or listen to a full piece of classical music, but since buying a smartphone a few years ago my attention span has gone downhill. Is there a way to reverse this process?

This is a pretty interesting documentary. It doesn't really have one cohesive focus. It follows Africans around talking about stuff, like sub-national monarchs and a couple politicians.

I have never actually won a single one of these threads. Everytime I see that comically anthropomorphized banana holding his peel in a suggestive manner, likening the peel to clothes and his peel-less nature to human nudity, I bust up laughing. This happens every time, no matter where I am, be it the house or the bus or in class. Sometimes I laugh just thinking about it. This is a dark memory but a few months back I had just gotten done with a fit of laughter caused by one of these hilarious threads. Suddenly my mom walks in and she's crying. I attempted to suppress the growing urge to laugh but it was getting more difficult. Face red, tears running down her aging face, mom grabs my shoulders and says "Your father's dead."

It was at that moment that I couldn't hold back anymore. I burst into a banana-induced fit of laughter, but the horrible news drew tears to my eyes. I laughed while I cried, tears streaming down my wide open grin, memories of daddy resurfacing and being melded and combined with the naked banana.

I ldost two things that night.

Should I get my bachelors degree?

Background:

I work as an inspector.

I'm already certified in things that matter in this job.

I'm working on a Technical Associate for a formal education in my field.

I'm clocking about 70k a year.

I'm on the fence about it because I greatly enjoy what I do and there is still so much to learn here but a Bachelors(ME) would open a lot of access to materials sciences and work down the line. The plan is to take my math/physics courses in CC and at least see if I'm cut out for it.

Even so I've seen the schedules at the university and realistically I'd have to quit for at least 2-3 years and its hard seeing as how much I've had to fight to get to where I am today only to give it up for an even more uncertain future.

I dunno, I'm tired of school and would like to focus on my job and social life for once but at the same time I don't want to be that guy who regrets not doing what needed to be done in his early 20's. But at the same time I don't want to be going part time to school for another fucking 6 years. I want to enjoy my life too.

What should I do?

Classical Education General

So /edu/ what are your thoughts on Classic Education?

Any resources that would help in pursuing a classical education?

Personally, I've been looking into it for a while and can't seem to find a really good resource for Adult "re-education" in all of the classic pursuits (Latin, Ancient Greek, English, Music, Astronomy, Arithmetic, theology, history, etc.) Closest I can find is a bunch of home school resources, but that seems a tad excessive.

I am really infatuated with the triumvirate approach as is presented here:

board circle

Would /edu/ like to join a board circle with /skill/ ?
What is a board circle?
Back on the oldish days of the internet, small website/forum owners would advertise each other in order to gain more traffic, and this can be done in 8chan.
What is /skill/ ?
/skill/ is a board where people teach and learn, much like this one, but our board has a unique format of doing this. Instead of doing things by subject, we are more like the /r/ of learning. It is hard to explain on my end, but I suggest you check it out.

Future plans

Hej /edu/ anons

What are your future plans? Are you planning anything after your education (if relevant)? Why are you choosing for this future?

R: 5 / I: 0 / P: 3
Hey, I tried starting >>>/university/
But then I was told about here and >>>/freedu/ and I was like damn

Would /university/ still be relevant? I kinda wanted it to emulate classroom where dedicated threads to a specific class, where everyone would discuss OCW or MOOC classes, or stuff like Khan. Also have them compliment their classes they're already taking, but use a MOOC that's relevant to it.

Or should I just ditch since this is here?

Documentaries

"Every day, the world over, large amounts of high-level radioactive waste created by nuclear power plants are placed in interim storage, which is vulnerable to natural disasters, man-made disasters, and to societal changes. In Finland the world’s first permanent repository is being hewn out of solid rock - a huge system of underground tunnels - that must last 100,000 years as this is how long the waste remains hazardous."

I really liked this documentary. Informative and creepy in equal measure.

Medicine

Am I the first medfag here?

Medical student, give me any/all of your medical related problems /medschool entry questions.

or just life in general.

I'll check back on here every day. if something is urgent and pressing, best to take it to the local ED rather than wait for an answer here.

if talking about certain ailments, include a picture of the thing if you can, if not, describe general symptoms including the following:

Previous episodes
Onset
Duration
Severity
Mitigating factors/alleviating factors
Other factors that come on concurrently with the ailment.

If in pain, in addition to the above:
type of pain
what makes it worse/better?
do you feel it anywhere else?

also include any past medical conditions you are aware off, as well as any medication you are on (recreational drugs, alcohol, smoking included), including the dose.

also height, weight, age, activity level and diet.

not all are necessary, but this makes sure we wont be going repeat rounds.

Khan Academy

Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization created in 2006 by educator Salman Khan to provide "a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere." Its website features thousands of educational resources, including a personalized learning dashboard, over 100,000 practice problems, and over 6,000 micro lectures via video tutorials stored on YouTube teaching mathematics, history, healthcare, medicine, finance, physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, cosmology, American civics, art history, economics, music, and computer science. All resources are available for free to anyone around the world. By 2013, they were used by about 10 million students per month. Khan Academy's micro lectures have been watched over 468 million times.

California State University Northridge fosters an environment well-suited to further one's education. It is because safety is compromised that the type of comment is going to be 'Negative'.

Having spent time as a student and guest to multiple Universities in California it is shocking to find there is a school as high-profile as this one that actively seeks to undermine its ability to make students feel like they are free to pursue their education without having to worry about being physically assaulted by other students or things possibly even worse.

The GPA held by the writer of this review is a 3.0 . It would seem that a student who manages to maintain such a GPA would be given the space to perform with little incident. Instead, there seems to be justification given by certain members of the academic student body to violate the physical space or well-being of other students. It should go without saying that saying disrespectful things to a complete stranger or using one's own person to attempt to incite violence should be grounds for expulsion. This behavior has been tolerated for well over two years since this writer's admission .

Another obstacle at CSUN is what appears to be a tolerance of people that are possibly mentally challenged. Whether such individuals are students or not is unclear. What can be said, is that the school tolerates the verbal abuse of guests on campus that verbally harass and molest other students either because they need serious attention, or because they are given free reign to do so without consequence.

Lastly there are scams targeted at gullible students simply trying to complete their education. Scams signed by officials working in various departments, officials that will remain unnamed, who have taken the liberty of exploiting the implications of their posts in order to take full advantage of students' trust for them. These officials do not make themselves available to meet the students that they are scamming and instead, make every effort to avoid them at all costs but their own. This is not a commentary on the availability of courses within a certain time frame ( a fair but common complaint ) but instead, an old-fashioned scam designed specifically to take a student's money and give them nothing in return . This isn't about tuition; it's about manipulation.

The author of this comment is African American. If a ten dollar bill appeared every time the author was provoked or challenged by a complete stranger on the street this author would be wealthy . What is shocking is that this author is being provoked on a college campus; a place that is expected to be a safer haven than the ugly realities of the world outside it. If CSUN wishes to portray itself as a beacon of crime and a reflection of the ugliness just beyond its on-campus dorms then it should be satisfied by what has been written here.

Initially I had only intended to comment on the insecurities of my professors in the face of educated and willing Black students but since lately the efforts of not only its guests or certain members of the student body but also its upper level officials to engage in underhanded money scams and attempts of incitement I decided to alter this comment to suit my most recent experiences.

I hope that those who have experienced this may find solace in reading this review. And hopefully those other individuals who find this threatening take into consideration the privacy of others who want nothing to do with you.

Neurodiversity

This thread is for discussion on so-called mental disabilities like autism, schizotypal PD, dyslexia, etc.

Neanderthals and Neurodiversity
I saw this ~4 years ago and it stuck with me.
The idea is that autism is an atavism (recurrence of phenotypes absent for generations) from Neanderthal DNA.
Abstract:
>"ASDs (autism spectrum disorders) are hypothesized as one of many adaptive human cognitive variations that have been maintained in modern populations via multiple genetic and epigenetic mechanisms.
>Introgression from “archaic” hominids (adapted for less demanding social environments) is conjectured as the source of initial intraspecific heterogeneity because strict inclusive fitness does not adequately model the evolution of distinct, copy-number sensitive phenotypes within a freely reproducing population.
>Evidence is given of divergent encephalization and brain organization in the Neanderthal (including a ~1520 cc cranial capacity, larger than that of modern humans) to explain the origin of the autism subgroup characterized by abnormal brain growth.
>Autism and immune dysfunction are frequently comorbid. This supports an admixture model in light of the recent discovery that MHC alleles (genes linked to immune function, mate selection, neuronal “pruning,” etc.) found in most modern human populations come from “archaic” hominids.
>Mitochondrial dysfunction, differential fetal androgen exposure, lung abnormalities, and hypomethylation/CNV due to hybridization are also presented as evidence."
