Am I the first medfag here?

Medical student, give me any/all of your medical related problems /medschool entry questions.

or just life in general.

I'll check back on here every day. if something is urgent and pressing, best to take it to the local ED rather than wait for an answer here.

if talking about certain ailments, include a picture of the thing if you can, if not, describe general symptoms including the following:

Previous episodes
Onset
Duration
Severity
Mitigating factors/alleviating factors
Other factors that come on concurrently with the ailment.

If in pain, in addition to the above:
type of pain
what makes it worse/better?
do you feel it anywhere else?

also include any past medical conditions you are aware off, as well as any medication you are on (recreational drugs, alcohol, smoking included), including the dose.

also height, weight, age, activity level and diet.

not all are necessary, but this makes sure we wont be going repeat rounds.

other medical and medically related staff feel free to chime in and offer alternative opinions. it is highly likely that one person cannot cover all the angles.

29, male. Once in a while I feel a slight pain in my chest, near the heart. It happens seemingly at random, when I'm at rest, never during a workout. My family has a history of heart conditions, but I had an exam done a few years ago by a specialist and he assured me that my heart was fine. I don't smoke or drink, I don't take any kind of medication, I'm not overweight, but I live a fairly sedentary lifestyle. The pain usually lasts a few minutes and goes away on its own. Should I be worried?

what type of specialist?

there is a few possibilities, prinzmetal angina comes to mind, alternatively, conduction rhythm abnormalities may be possible (look up wolf parkinson white syndrome).

it would be wise to go for a checkup with your gp so he can refer you to get an ecg done (EKG if you are murrican) with adminsitration of a provocative agent.

usually prinzmetal angina dosent show anything on an ECG unless it is during an attack, so there is a possibility that it was for this reason it wasnt picked up by the specialist.

how often does this occur? if its more than once a day, 24 hour holter monitoring can be considered as a diagnostic tool.

alternatively, it could just be something like regular gastrosephageal reflux. (theres a name, i forget).

does anything make it better? does anything make it worse? e.g. like lying down

Are the attacks getting more frequent? if not, odds are you have nothing to worry about (although you should try to exercise a bit). if they are getting more frequent, best to go back to your gp and see him again.

>what type of specialist?
A cardiologist.

>how often does this occur?

Not very often, but since it's not a regular occurrence and it doesn't always come with the same amount of pain (sometimes I barely feel it, others it's moderately painful), I wouldn't be able to say exactly how often.

>does anything make it better? does anything make it worse? e.g. like lying down

I've tried changing positions but it doesn't seem to make any noticeable difference. Sometimes I think that physical activity might make it better, like going for a short run, just to get the heart pumping.

>Are the attacks getting more frequent?

I would say no, but I'm not too sure. I think I'll start taking note of when they happen, to see if there's any kind of pattern. If it gets to the point that I feel the need to get it checked again, I'll at least be able to answer these questions.

Thanks for your time, Scholar!
