And be sure to install Wireshark (https://www.wireshark.org/), it's a free packet analyser, play with it while you are studying.

Wireshark works on GNU/Linux, you should be able to install it using your distro's package manager. If that doesn't work, you can try compiling the source code yourself or downloading one of the third party packages listed at the bottom of the download page.

But if you really need something other, you can try tcpdump, but it's really bare-bones.
