> Tutoring autistic 3rd grader
> Attention span all over the place
> Asks when the break time is or waves to his mother
> Whenever asked to refer to a number he starts counting from one
> Cannot or will not subtract/add on their own
> I feel like shit when he gets tired, or when he throws a tantrum

What's a good way to hold his attention span, and take him on a magical math adventure?

 No.60

Try removing the distractions.

 No.61

>>60
Can't really remove distractions in Cafes or Libraries which is where we usually meet.

>be me
>have neighbor who suffers stress induced seizures
>same neighbor bore child
>about 6 at the time
>has add, adhd, odd, and a shit ton of other problems
>chased family dog with siccors? (can't fucking spell) wanting to see what was inside
>didn't care that dog would die
>and somehow this faggot had to find a way to tutor him

You know how I got into his mind? which also had voices talking to him and shit? We would talk about magic, and I would get him hooked onto basic math with coin tricks, making them disapear and reappear.

You want him on a math adventure? You gotta act like a dnd game master and plan the map, the obstacles, just like a teacher has to plan their sessions, and tests.

not gonna happen

Why are there adults that find math repulsive?
I was talking to my mother and for fun decided to query her knowledge on algebra. Questions were basically like this, I had to explain in depth some of the points:
"What is x*x?" "Uh 2x, 1x? I dunno." "Its x^2." …
"What is x^2 + x?" "Is it x^3?" "Not it is x^2 + x, is 3^2 + 3 [=] 3^3?"
"What is 2^3/2^2?" … [Basically explained how x^n/x^n-1 = x but with numbers and ^2 and ^3 then went on to show how x^m/x^n = x^m-n]
The way she handled it was sort of like was like she was raped by math as a child and never wanted to see math again. It would "see, look at the paper." "No! I don't want to." I wasn't being mean and was joking and stuff. It was weird.

Also does anyone understand b)? I see what happened in a) but not b).

Great book, relatively magnificent website:

1. Schools teach math the wrong way
2. People never really learn it
3. People avoid things that remind them of their failure / make them feel stupid

>>222
I understand b). Which part is confusing for you?

You could try rewriting the square roots as x^(1/2) and see if that helps.

I've got a sneaky suspicion they didn't have a real control group.

Isn't it exactly what's happening in schools?

 No.357

Work his interests or personal obsessions into it somehow.
