Why are there adults that find math repulsive?
I was talking to my mother and for fun decided to query her knowledge on algebra. Questions were basically like this, I had to explain in depth some of the points:
"What is x*x?" "Uh 2x, 1x? I dunno." "Its x^2." …
"What is x^2 + x?" "Is it x^3?" "Not it is x^2 + x, is 3^2 + 3 [=] 3^3?"
"What is 2^3/2^2?" … [Basically explained how x^n/x^n-1 = x but with numbers and ^2 and ^3 then went on to show how x^m/x^n = x^m-n]
The way she handled it was sort of like was like she was raped by math as a child and never wanted to see math again. It would "see, look at the paper." "No! I don't want to." I wasn't being mean and was joking and stuff. It was weird.
Also does anyone understand b)? I see what happened in a) but not b).
Great book, relatively magnificent website:
