In terms of mute people? Gestures. You definitely need to think about things differently when all you can do is point and nod, and it somewhat limits your character to relative extremes of "takes charge without regard for others" or "just sorta goes with whatever's happening", though playing the extremes can, in itself, be interesting. In terms of ferals? More body language, mainly. Confused stares, suggestive nudging, and you can still use vocalizations that make sense for whatever your playing as, such as growling or whining. You can also write out your characters thoughts, even if they have no way of actually conveying them, so that the other player has a better idea of what you want and for a bit of added context.
Either way, non-speaking characters are fun and interesting to play, but a fair amount more difficult because you have to actually think about how your character would express themselves.
As a side note, I once had WAY too much fun playing a pokemon that expected humans to understand pokemon-speak.

You definitely put a lot into describing actions, little inflections in your movement, the tone or length of a squeak. You can actually convey a lot without actually narrating it; though it usually involves being rather forceful or touchy feely to get the point across. Knowing how to react to a partner's actions is really important too, flinching, nuzzling or leering to being petted take the situation in three completely different directions, though you'll want to avoid performing too much or you'll have your partner playing catch up or unsure on how to react.

And so, when things go from Otherworld to here, it tries to convert these beings that really don't belong, and you end up with oddities. Unusual coloring is pretty much a given. Floating bits are pretty common as well. It's important to distinguish that these are pretty unique from fantasy monsters or lovecraftian horrors. Fantasy monsters are generally variations on what we have, given a bit of oomph, eldritch abominations are gigantic quasi-godlike beings that flood your mind with imperceptible notions, meanwhile otherworld creatures simply don't belong. They are the result of the universe trying to display something that it is physically unable to, and the end result coming out relatively corrupted. Like, if you opening a microsoft word file using notepad, there's a lot of data there about formatting and whatnot that notepad simply has no equivalent of, and so you end up with a whole bunch of garbage text, BUT, if you look around enough the content is still there, nearly lost but still readable
I know that's a rather large text block and I'm probably doing a poor job of explaining it, but it's something that's hard to explain. It's like describing what makes something "dreamlike". There's no really good description, other than maybe "surreal", but that's not really a description, more of a synonym. Dreams can be fantastical, but they generally aren't so full of lights and magic and abstractions as most images you find trying to depict dreams. They can be almost entirely like real life, but there's still always something off: mirrors simply looking shiny rather than reflecting things, inconsistent details.
Similarly, Otherworld beings can be bizarre variations of things we have here, but most of them aren't. These creatures are certainly full of all kinds of crazy features, but it still all has more or less work together; keep in mind that back in its home dimension, these things are relatively mundane. What's most important is abstraction from reality. These things were NOT designed for life on earth, but somehow, they're here, and they're not having much of any problem living. They likely won't be able to speak in the traditional sense either, but may have other ways of communicating, which may be more or less efficient
