So /erp/, lets share our sources of inspiration when it comes to making characters.

On F-List I play only straight/bi blues so of course I have my work cut out for me when it comes to making a character that people actually want to look twice at. I've had some mixed results of course but lately I've learned that doujins are a good source for me to draw from when it comes to making a character that people want to play with. Of course I'm not talking about the ones where it's just a average guy in an average or slightly less average situation, but the kinkier stuff. My newest character has been getting tons of attention lately which is pretty pleasing even if I have to wade through a lot of shit so I think I'll be sticking to reading doujins about a fetish I like and then creating characters based off of that from now on.

What about you guys? When making a character what do you draw from to ensure that they have a good hook to them?

I'm interested in this but don't have much input.

I've only played slutty catgirls, a shy girl, and a drunk dom in my extremely short tenure, and those have been pretty generic.

I usually try to ask the people I've been playing with on /b/ what they're looking for to get inspiration, and then I look up relevant pics on gelbooru.

No, not curve balls. I won't like it if it's just *anything*. I have *one specific thing* I want to have happen. It's stupid, it's counter intuitive, and it pisses me off that I can't even pretend to like it because it's so taboo. I can't even make a profile that kinda hints at it, because the second I think it might be happening because I asked for it, I get turned off.

This sounds like a stop mixing IC and OOC up kind of thing. Even if your magic button is pressed by chance, it’s still not you it’s happening too. By extension, if you advertise for it ooc, it’s not your character asking for it. I know it sounds a bit robotic, and I’m not saying that there should never be any cross over, but keeping you and your characters as separate skins to slip into could be a way to go about getting your itch scratched.

I do get it though. That surprise favourite kink out of the blue is always a treat. Mine is face slapping inside and out of sex with a very light dash of Stockholm syndrome mixed in, and I’ll be damned if anyone would ever dare to just do it in a scene, even if I have it on my favourites. At least I can make dom characters and slap a cute face by surprise instead.

It's about as much mixing IC and OOC as the idea of fapping to or schlicking to an RP is. Having something that gets me off is simply something I'm gonna strive for, period. That being said, if I'm not turned on by something, I have a hard time making my character get turned on. Kinda like I can't for the life of me play a character that's not my gender.

That's the thing: If I tell anyone what it is, I'll always wonder if someone's put it together and talked to me because of it. I'll basically never be able to talk to someone from f-list or /erp/ without thinking about it, and realizing that I set myself up for it. It'll turn me off for the rest of the roleplaying career.

How about getting someone to set you up? A friend who convinces a stranger to surprise you. Maybe even yourself, asking someone to come at you with an alt account without your knowing when or who.

Set up your profile with kinks that lean towards being submissive or someone needing to be put in their place, lay down your hard offs, and state that you don't want your character raped, etc. RP like usual. But if you're lucky, one of them will disregard that last rule out of no where.
