Alright, I think I need some help.
I made https://www.f-list.net/c/istvan%20karlow/ about a week ago, and since then I lost count of how many adjustments I've made to him. One character I approached called him "too gritty and dark", so I asked a second opinion and apparently there is a consensus.
Is he really that dark considering the amount of characters that are orphans who lost their parents at a young age, assassins trained from childhood, not to mention the rapists and prostitutes? (is that even a word?)
Does it look like something made by an edgemaster?
The person I asked mentioned he was probably "too real" for ERP. How can I make it less dark without diluting the character?
Finally, I tried to write stuff that would show that he's not a two-dimensional character made just about angst and PTSD, for example adding the "lover" section. What else can I do to make him into a more well-rounded human being?

Well, depends on at what point you asked people. As of right now with the current build you have for him, no I wouldn't say dark at all. Gritty? Perhaps, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, especially when considering he's meant to be rough around the edges without being an asshole or a psychopath. So no, I don't think he's dark at all, serious yes, but certainly not dark. I've seen some edgy as fuck profiles around, and people throw around childhood abuse as if it's a hip thing to do. I think that the people you spoke to might have had the wrong definition of "Dark" in their heads or haven't seen some of the truly edgy profiles on F-list. Take that from a person that plays a DKoK Krieger of all things.
That being said, he certainly does come off as being realistic, but so are those shitty profiles made for celebrities and porn stars, yet no body seems to bat an eyelash. There are some players that love the strong, more emotionally distanced types, as well as older characters. Again, I don't know what builds you had for him before, but this one looks like it has potential. You have the personality, the backstory which would allow for IC reminiscing and relevance, as well as reasoning for why he'd shrug off friendly advances.
Lover section was a good addition I think, but it might be nice to add something regarding what he does in his downtime. Hobbies, where he stays, etc. Does he like to sit down with a good Sci-fi novel and get away from the world, or maybe he gets a lot of satisfaction from little home improvement projects, or hell perhaps he's got a small garden in his backyard that he tries his hardest to take care of. It doesn't have to be huge, but it offers another more human side of him to look at.

Not exactly what I meant as Realism as a problem. Majority of my characters are a based on historical realism and they do just fine. What I was trying to say was that realism -isn't- a problem. If all those generic porn star profiles can get play, you can as well. Given that you're looking for something with more plot than smut (at least initially), having a well rounded and more believable character than "anime MC #672" will benefit you in the long-run. I say keep the backstory and keep his current job-line up. It's easy to understand, makes sense, and is saying that you know what you want to do with him.

I have some observations:
The first thing that strikes me about your profile are the quotes. Since I'm using the dark theme they stand out quite a bit in that color, and there are several of them. Why not use the built-in quote function instead? Also, the one about the family seems a bit drawn out.
It says that he is a "simple" shape shifter, but that seems like a contradiction, considering how much he's actually able to change about his body.
The last two sentences of the first paragraph should probably be separated by a colon instead of a period, since they are connected in meaning.
I would keep IC and OOC information separate, taking the notice and the observation about playing as a different species and put it closer to "Scene Ideas" and "Setting Ideas". I would also move the "Meet the Family" section above the OOC information.
The different sections of the profile are defined by titles in red, but they are not consistent: some are underlined and others aren't, some have colons after them and others don't, some have the text start next to them and others have it starting on the next line. Try to make it uniform.
The section about the family seems needlessly long, unless you plan on having those characters come up a lot during role-play.
Lastly, I'm not a fan of the image. This is a personal opinion and not an objective fact, but it seems a bit cliché and not made in a style that appeals to me.

It feels lacking in the sexual department though. As the setting might play a back seat to the scene sometimes, a bit more of her sexual background or some generic details of fantasies of hers might sort of help open up some doors with the kinks established.
