Coming from someone who writes from the opposite side ( Mostly female canons with a thing for shotas ) I've found both can be fine. I've written with people who have sort of 'blank slate' or hub profiles and it can be fun to plan out who his character is and all that. With a set in stone character you lose out on that, but both work.
