Brotip, most of a 2hu's "canon" identity is made up of like 10 lines of dialogue and a short paragraph of description, barring the ones that show up in multiple games. The rest comes from the collective consciousness of the fans.

Play the games, read the wiki, read a shitton of doujins if you feel it, but don't worry about getting them "right" because they're all pretty loose and vague (and probably by design, too)

If you mean leaving them loose and vague so people can get attached to them by writing in their own ideas to fill in the blanks, not really - that's like saying Big Core has no dialogue so people can fantasize about it. Most of the 2hus are just one shot boss characters to be pummeled and nothing more. KanColle, on the other hand, was absolutely built that way to attract the frothing mass of faggots who jumped on Touhou and inserted their own waifu fantasies into the cracks

Regardless of whether based ZUN wanted us to expand on his characters or simply turn them into swiss cheese, the fandom on both sides of the pacific have already made the former the norm.

Not so much a knockoff, at least with Touhou, but definitely designed to capitalize on what made it a hit with a large portion of it's fanbase, which is also why the sheer flood of 2hu porn has abated and moved to KanColle of late. That said, KanColle has yet to produce anything as great as Megamari, Scarlet Symphony, or Totsugeki Master Spark, so I really couldn't care less about it.

For sure, and it's led to some amusing things otherwise, so I won't say it's wrong or right. Just saying I don't think it was intended in Touhou's case, whereas I'm positive it is in KanColle's.
