>What is IPFS?

It's basically BitTorrent on steroids.

>why would one use it

* Distributed, decentralized filesharing (for now - ipfs is merely the communication protocol, and additional applications can exist on top of it).

* You can have a mutable address (i.e. always points to the latest version of a site), or a static address (points to a specific file). Yes, you can host sites over IPFS.

* Peers are found fast for new downloads since the entire content is basically one huge torrent.

* Already very fast, fast enough to stream 720p videos in realtime. Uploading and publishing are also very fast.

localhost:5001/webui gives you a web interface to upload files by drag'n'drop and explore the files you are seeding ("pinned files").

The command line functions are as follows:

>how to upload a single file

$ ipfs add ./$file

Access it at localhost:8080/ipfs/$outputted-hash

>how to upload a dir

$ ipfs add -r ./$dir

Access it at localhost:8080/ipfs/$last-outputted-hash

>how to make the thing mutable

$ ipfs name publish ./$file-or-dir-hash

Access it at localhost:8080/ipns/$output-hash-aka-peerid (it's ipNs not ipFs)

To update, publish another hash and it will be available at the same IPNS address.

To give an easier name to an ipns or ipfs site, add a TXT record to your DNS with value "dnslink=/ipfs/hash" (or ipns if it's an ipns hash).

You might want to use ipfs add -w <hash> for single files, it wraps the file in a directory which allows you to link through the directory with a readable filename for the file proper.

For publishing, the -t option, which defaults to 24h, decides how long the ipns name remains valid. You might want to use -t 9Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

Warning. IPFS is currently in alpha. Its currently very usable, however when a bug occurs it cripples. Otherwise it is very likely that IPFS will become a good protocol once the bugs are hammered.

I have decided to start a short thread and share some of the Operating System backups I have backed up over the last year. If anyone wants to add some more links, please feel free to do so! The more operating systems we backup and share with each other, the better off we are when the TPP hits the fan!

Windows XP Professional SP2 & SP3 Backups!

https://www.mediafire.com/?8pleulcef91dr

This is a bundle of Windows XP (SP2 and SP3) operating systems including the Warez "Black Edition" (available for 32-bit and 64-bit processors)!

Some come with serials and others are Pre-activated! Many versions of Windows XP are included in the bundle! This huge bundle includes pretty much ALL you will ever need!

Following files include:

• EN Windows XP Pro sp3 VL (MSDN).zip

• Microsoft Windows XP Professional x86 (32 Bit) Edition with SP3 VLEN.zip

• Microsoft.Windows.Xp.Pro.Sp2.32Bit.October.2007.iso

• Microsoft.Windows.XP.Professional.SP3.x86.Integrated.April.2014-Maherz.zip

• WIN XP SP3 (1-1).ZIP

• Windows XP Professional BACKUPS + Serial.pdf

• Windows XP Professional SP2 Original with key [trutorrent].zip

• Windows XP Professional SP3 + Serial.iso

• Windows XP PROFESSIONAL SP3 Jan 2015 + SATA Drivers [TechTools.net].zip

• Windows XP Professional SP3 x86 - Black Edition 2014.7.13.zip

• Windows XP Professional with SP2 ISO, Pre-activated, and key included.zip

• Windows_XP_Pro_SP3_32bit_Black_Edition_2013.4.16.zip

PLEASE don't forget to disable auto-update! Windows auto-update can detect, and likely will defunct pirated versions!

They either don't need serials or have the serials packed with them… Then again every Windows version up to XP can be easily activated with any serial found on Google.

Have any of you heard of I2Pd? It's an I2P implementation that was written in C++, not Java. Many here seem to distrust Java because it requires you to download the JRE, which is only available as a proprietary binary for those still on windows; in addition, it has a myriad of security issues. It doesn't come with a built-in torrent client, but it seems interesting and very helpful to people who don't trust Java.

Hoarding is good and all, but it only takes one hard drive failure for it to all be in vain.

Right now I have 4 terabytes worth of data spread out among multiple hard drives. What would be the best method to back this up? The only decent means of back-ups that I've found are either cloud storage or external hard drives. Building a (multi-terabyte) server seems really expensive, and paying other providers online is much, much more expensive (most providers cap out at like 250gb of storage for hundreds of dollars a year, fuck that). I've found some 3-5 terabyte external drives on Amazon for a good price (fuck they'll probably be even cheaper once black friday/cyber monday rolls around), but I want to know what you guys think.

>more than I could ever consume

Right, but if you store "just enough content" that you imagine yourself enjoying, when you want something else that used to be available before it was lost/your tastes changed, it might be more difficult to find it.

Then, of course, there is the sharing aspect of things. Some people leech and don't give a fuck. I'm not one of those people, nor do I think most "hoarders" are - most I know think it would be cool as fuck to have things set up like mesh networks, WAPs, etc., it's just an issue of spare bandwidth and privacy concerns. Most of us want to share, and our archives are not strictly for ourselves.

>>774

For what reason do you need a backup server and not JBOD? Or, just plain old backup drives? If you want a seedbox or something you can just build a really low-spec PC and slap hard drives in it, but then the questions are

>what OS do you want it to run (linux or BSD obviously recommended)

>how do you plan on seeding

VPS? Paid VPN? Which ones? etc.

It just sounds like you don't completely understand the question you're asking. That's fine, it's a sign of curiosity, but when you're curious about a topic searching startpage.com can give you some answers, or simply better ways to ask better questions so you can get better information.

I would say that a paid VPN (I use Nord VPN, but check Torrentfreak to see what others are out there) a Free torrent client (qbitorrent) and maybe a simple USB external hard drive would be a good place to start for you. So long as your VPN is up, you can leave your torrent Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

Duno if this helps. This was randomly included in a torrent I downloaded.

X– How the make a torrent live forever –X

Do you hate it when torrents of cool old shows whither and die as trackers obsolesce? Well, that doesn't have to happen.

1) Get yourself a bittorrent client which either [A] supports the editing of torrent files to update their trackers *without* altering the hash-number (circa 2006, I am aware of no utility which does so, although it is an obvious improvement), or [B] allows manually editing the tracker field of a a torrent presently open in the client (circa 2006, uTorrent for PC is capable of doing so).

2) Go to http://www.openlitebt.com/trackerlist/ and save the tracker list. If the site is down, changed or defunct, do a web-search for "torrents public tracker list".

3a) [PC/uTorrent-specialized instructions] Edit the list of public trackers in notepad so that there is a blank line between every one. When it's done, highlight, right-click and "copy".

3b) Open uTorrent and open the torrent you wish to trade. Right-click on the torrent's name in uTorrent's main window, and drop down to Properties; click. A pop-window will appear with General (default main) and Advanced tabs; the torrent's tracker list should be showing in General. Left-click the list to insert a typing cursor, then down-arrow all the way to the bottom; make sure there's an extra empty line, then paste in the trackers you cut/copied in 3a. Click the [OK] button of the Properties windows.

Example of this in practice: "Greatest Ultra-Rare Show Ever" torrent is hosted on a single site, with a tracker of something like "xyztorrents.com/6969:announce" – and that site goes down. With the "uTorrent trick" above, seeds and peers who employ it can continue to trade the file until either someone creates a new torrent file with new trackers (resulting in a new hash number) or a means is created to edit existing torrent files.

b800a3 No.788

>>749

Torrents can stay up for years and years (some have lasted for over 10 years now). It all depends on whether someone is still seeding. If the last seed drops, and disconnects, never to come back … then the torrent dies, and whoever is left holding some of the bytes is sharing partial bytes of a defunct file.

Trackers only help the client to find more peers/seeds. It will not necessarily mean that there are any left if the torrent is old.

Bit torrent (the DHT protocol) is really just a more advanced, decentralized version of P2P file sharing where several can share a file at the same time, and if one disconnects the rest of the file can be seeded (shared) by others still online.

Thus, unlike P2P or file hosting services, torrent links (magnets) typically last longer.

I am very interested in a new protocol called IPFS which (allegedly) will keep files online indefinitely… although this new protocol is not widely adopted … at least yet.

a48a96 No.790

>>763

DHT and peer exchange make trackers obsolete. The only reason to have them is for private trackers to keep track of ratios.

Have anyone else here thought about reviving BBSing? You see, this method of communication would work great on low-bandwidth networks, like meshnets. There's BBS-software that is still developed, pic related is from the official BBS of x/84. Big files, like the ones y'all are archiving, could be transmitted through sneakernet, or we could revive the concept of copyparties.

d81ae5 No.772

Very interesting op, bbs's may be essential for meshnets running at shortwave.

The creation of a sneakernet will have to depend on the dedication of anons and more importantly, location.

I don't see copyparties happening though.

Also, have you ever heard the occurrence of digital shortwave?

Only problem would be the equipment, but can you imagine nodes spreading a few hundred - or even thousand km.

Makes for a very accessible network.

And imagine DX skipping with it, although with digital signals bouncing off the ionosphere I highly doubt the connection would be anywhere near usable for casual use - hence the bbs

a0397e No.782

>>772

I imagined the sneakernet being a set of discs with media and software on it, where you spread textfiles containing file lists and checksums over BBSs. Look up the Fish Disks.

823aa4 No.785

>>782

I like this idea. I have tons of shit already backed up on flashdrives, CDs & DVDs I can share with others (as I often do today, mostly software programs and music too).

There is already something similar going on in the prepper world using HAM radio networks:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKYqkNAN4q8

I will not lie though, someone would have to coach me on how BBS works because I've never had the privilege to try it.

a0397e No.786

>>785

Just try telnetting 1984.ws, this is the official BBS of x/84. I've heard that both Telnet and SSH would be unsuitable for communication over meshnets and other high-latency networks because they query the server for every character typed, which would mess up your typing. We'd need a protocol that sends all the text you write in one chunk, when you tell the client to do so.

in all honesty anime/manga and books/information is the only stuff worth archiving. since anything else is cheap and easy to find/replicate

7d01ea No.781

I highly disagree with you, for several reasons. Sure, anime is important to have backed up, for those who wish to have it if TPP hits the fan (full-blown internet censorship). But guess what? You need operating systems and the right kind of software to read those PDF/Epub/Ebook files. So you should have backups of your favorite OS and software. You need stuff like I2P or P2P or BT clients to share that anime with others, right? Well, you should have backups of I2P / P2P & BT clients. You wanna remain anonymous right? You should consider having a backup of the newest Tribler (P2P onion routing platform) as well as onionshare and Tor.

If all you do is collect anime … what happens if your system crashes and you need to reboot the OS but you don't have a backup? You loose your all your shit, and you loose your access to those anime files too.

In my opinion, you need backups of everything: from an extra computer, to extra operating system backups(bootable ISOs), right down to the software in which you rely on.

Upload it to tracker2.postman.i2p if you have I2P set up, my man. After that, upload it to ebooks.i2p and tome.i2p, they're ebook archival eepsites.

I made a channel in the i2p IRC, we should migrate there.

>HOW DO I IRC WITH i2p????

Start your IRC client (e.g. Chatzilla, Pidgin, XChat) and connect to the server at 127.0.0.1 port 6668. You do not need to configure a proxy in your IRC client; I2P provides you with a local IRC tunnel (configured in your IRC client as an IRC server or remote host). Your local I2P IRC tunnel on localhost:6668 will direct you to one of two IRC servers hosted on I2P by Postman and Badger, but neither you nor they know where the other is, and your mom, ISP or government is unable to intercept your conversation!

Then you just join #EternalArchive

PD: The old irc operator can get op if he wants

The problem right now is no one usually runs i2p if they arent actively using it. And sitting idle in irc isn't exactly fun.

Also it fucks with my games so I cant run it while doing that

Even a Raspberry Pi can work as an I2P router:

What happened to the channel? No one, not even Machai or even a bot is there anymore.

441653 No.759

Can anyone tell me about the "test text board" that is mentioned in by chanserv on the channel? I can't connect to it as an eepsite, and I didn't manage to telnet into it either.

With the TPP coming soon, I'd like to switch over to Linux. What distros would /eternalarchive/ recommend, and why?

I installed Manjaro about a week ago. If you want to take some time to learn, Arch isn't that hard either. I couldn't get it to work with my wireless adapter with plug and play and I couldn't find the right drivers for it.

Xubuntu is my favorite Linux OS. Linux Mint is pretty nice as well. Also check out BlackLab, very nice easy to use environment.

I have MEGA archives of Linux distros posted @ http://8ch.net/killcen2015/res/2.html

bea33d No.734

First thing to do:

Get the live bootable DVD installer of gentoo linux (no meme plx) so you'll be able to try out ALL the different desktop environments.

DEs or desktop environments target different users.

Descending order of bloat:

KDE Plasma for people who love to customize almost anything incl animations and you can even rotate widgets! (how cool is that eh?) Comes with a nice GUI but beware of crashes! Works best with a bleeding edge (or up to date) distros and the best choice for this would be OpenSUSE tumbleweed420.

memory hog and CPU hog. low-end devices such as netbooks are it's nemesis! 2GHz 2008 dualcore processors and a 2GB ram would do fine otherwise it'll be unusable.

Unity is just simple. For those who hate GNOME. Unity is recommended for first timers. Ubuntu is the distro! Stable and smooth.

GNOME is like KDE but less tweakable, less settings than KDE, OK tier. much more memory hog than KDE Plasma (Last I checked!) but less CPU hog! Stutters sometimes.

Cinnamon for those who like Windows. Linux Mint is the way but why choose the kike distro with a horrible logo? You can get fedora spins or opensuse version with cinnamon preinstalled.

Openbox, XFCE, i3 , iceWM are for those who like it minimal, those who don't compromise performance with graphical fancies. It doesn't require you to use bleeding edge distros! low-end devices are its friend! 1GB

- - -

Which DE?

Minimal net install or fully packaged distro?

Bleeding Edge Stable or Unstable or Stable distro?

Package manager?

Which *nix file system?

For me Arch, Debian, Gentoo/Funtoo, Mageia, Fedora, OpenSUSE, Ubuntu are the best choice.

Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

Are there any kinds of all-in-one downloads available for Linux software useful to us? Do many distros just come with a large amount of software included in the installation? I'm thinking of Wine, for one thing.

Seconding Void as a distro.

XBPS along with everything else I tried works a lot better than I had expected.

(The repos are missing some stuff so you ought to be prepared to grab things yourself even though you should only have to do it a few times.Don't forget to add the other repos as needed)

It also frees you from systemDick

A bunch of anons were talking about how they wanted to begin archiving music. I guess we can discuss that here.

>What format should it be?

FLAC or 320 MP3 I assume. FLAC is preferred.

>What can I do to help?

Find a best of/top 100/etc and download those albums.

Post ITT the ones that you have so we don't get too many duplicates.

>Where can I upload it?

http://tracker2.postman.i2p and/or http://diftracker.i2p

The first is preferred, and then you can post the link to the torrents ITT if you wish, so we can get a few seeders.

In a little bit I'll create a community pastebin type thing where we can all add the albums that we've downloaded and uploaded.

Pic related is part of my music library, most of it is in FLAC or 320, so I'll start going through that and making torrents.

Of course, any other ideas post them ITT.

Here's what I got. Like 128GB, all mostly complete discographies. I'm gonna check each band's wiki page and see if I'm missing any albums of any of these I already got in a few hours.

But like, what do I do with it now? Do I put it all in a huge zip file and upload it somewhere? How are we actually archiving this?

Alright, I'll have this uploaded to an i2p torrent as soon as I can figure out why Postman is refusing my torrent file upload. If clearnet is wanted, I'd go ahead and just click this mega link, unless it gets DMCA'd.

Also remember, the devs said the transition over to Next will delete all our content, so be sure to archive those archives (or at least how to get to them).
