Have anyone else here thought about reviving BBSing? You see, this method of communication would work great on low-bandwidth networks, like meshnets. There's BBS-software that is still developed, pic related is from the official BBS of x/84. Big files, like the ones y'all are archiving, could be transmitted through sneakernet, or we could revive the concept of copyparties.

Very interesting op, bbs's may be essential for meshnets running at shortwave.

The creation of a sneakernet will have to depend on the dedication of anons and more importantly, location.

I don't see copyparties happening though.

Also, have you ever heard the occurrence of digital shortwave?

Only problem would be the equipment, but can you imagine nodes spreading a few hundred - or even thousand km.

Makes for a very accessible network.

And imagine DX skipping with it, although with digital signals bouncing off the ionosphere I highly doubt the connection would be anywhere near usable for casual use - hence the bbs

I imagined the sneakernet being a set of discs with media and software on it, where you spread textfiles containing file lists and checksums over BBSs. Look up the Fish Disks.

I like this idea. I have tons of shit already backed up on flashdrives, CDs & DVDs I can share with others (as I often do today, mostly software programs and music too).

There is already something similar going on in the prepper world using HAM radio networks:

I will not lie though, someone would have to coach me on how BBS works because I've never had the privilege to try it.

Just try telnetting 1984.ws, this is the official BBS of x/84. I've heard that both Telnet and SSH would be unsuitable for communication over meshnets and other high-latency networks because they query the server for every character typed, which would mess up your typing. We'd need a protocol that sends all the text you write in one chunk, when you tell the client to do so.
