Stickied discussion thread.

Sorry for my lack of activity here the last few days - I was out of state for a wedding. I am also starting my new job tomorrow so I will attempt to update/evolve when I can, but might not be around a whole lot. These games are always amazing because of the community, not the game leader (though I like to think I help).

I am making this a sticky so we can put all ideas/discussion/questions into one thread so I don't have to sort through individual games to find said things.

I want to start by suggesting everyone pop over to the wikia and edit when they can. I know we don't have a lot of players now, but I fear one day a game may reach page 15 and all will be lost.

http://evol.wikia.com/wiki/Evol_Games_Wikia

GMS created this and to my knowledge is the only one who had edited anything (this is an apology from me as well).

So, let the discussion commence!

Board rules.

New players, read this!

First, welcome new players. We need you. Similar to fight club, if it is your first time on the board - you have to evolve a creature. So how do these games work? There are really only 2 rules:

1) Take an image, alter it somehow, save as .PNG

2) Post the image with a short description on what has changed

You should also name your creature, you can keep the old name or give it a new one. New names tend to signify a splinter-species. This thread does not count as a game.

There are a few other guidelines for playing.

> If a previous player made a change (added wings for example) the next evolution should not remove the same change. It can breed out over time, but allow the species to splinter and grow first.

> There is no winning, you do not "own" these creatures. The point of this game is to have a good time and help build a universe. If you're a control freak we don't want you playing.

> Please get my approval for a new game. We need to build on what little we have, Rome fell because it spread itself too thin.

I want you to play and have fun. If you find the game is stale or want to add something new, let me know. This is not my game, it is ours.

General MS paint thread

So I'm sure you guys have some other masterpieces laying around. Or maybe you just want a place to drop in other pictures that don't really fit in the other threads. New or old, this is the place to do it.

Tropical Island Evolution

Welcome to Thrasja island, a small cluster of tropical islands (consisting of two major islands, and small dots of land, all of which is easily accessable) far from any other land, with a climate perfect for life. The forests on Thrasja are lush and tall, akin to the rainforests of Earth. There is a large lake near the top of the large island, between two peaks. Three large rivers go down the mountain, holding fresh water that feeds into the lake from an underground well. smaller creeks are common around the big rivers.

Meet the inhabitants of these islands below:

The Oco are primarily herbivorous, eating bark, leaves, fruit, tubers, and other vegetation, but are known to feed on dead animals and anything it can catch. They scale the trees of the island, using their large front limbs like ice picks. They are adept swimmers as well, being descendant from octopus-like creatures, as evident from their eight limbs and hard beak. Their sturdy exoskeleton keeps them mostly safe from falls and predation. Their long "tail" gives them balance while climbing, and a rudder while swimming. They are active at any time of day or night. Females will lay their soft-shelled eggs by the hundreds by the sea, or in rivers or lakes, wherever there is water. If any eggs find themselves out of water, they will not develop and "die" until water becomes available to them, and then the eggs will continue to develop. Oco are primarily solitary, but do not mind the company of other members of their species. Oco are mild-mannered and are generally only aggressive when hungry or looking for a mate.

Laz are plain lizard-like animals. They are capable of eating everything the Oco do (they are capable climbers and swimmers as well), but their main prey is the Hof. Laz must be active during the day, while the sun can warm their bodies, as they are cold blooded. At night, Laz are inclined to dig underground the beach, where the sand/soil is still warm from the sun's rays. They lay their clutch of 3-5 hard-shelled eggs in the hot sand. Laz are extremely aggressive and territorial.

Hof are small hoofed mammals, and are very similar to small rodents of Earth. They primarily eat vegetation and seeds, and produce many young quickly, as many as 8 young per pregnancy. Hof have keen senses, but have especially keen smell, which allows them to find the ripest fruit and keep out of the way of predators. They also produce milk on patches of their underside, letting their young lap it up. Hof make their homes in nooks and crannies, which can be under roots, inside a tree, or in small underground tunnels that the Hof or Laz dig. They are mostly active at night, when Laz are not a problem. Hof are somewhat solidary, but as there are so many of them across the islands, bumping into another of their kind is not uncommon or unwelcome. There is plenty of food and mates for everyone, so there is no need to be aggressive.

The trip I'm using is for events I will do in the future.

Cave Evolution

The Caves, it's abundant in underground ponds, only if you can find them. The caves are frigid, despite this, they have boiling sulfuric pools as well.

The Sik are insects that use it's two legs to hop around, and uses it's tail to push off the ground.

They has a head ornament that has no blood vessels going to it. They use it to confuse the Zih into biting it, as to give the Sik a better chance at survival.

These creatures a much more resistant than the Zih, as they feed off the Ubt, using their dual-pronged lower leg to scoop up any that float to the edges.

The Zih the only creature with bioluminescence in this dark abyss. It is amphibious, and moves from pool to pool. They don't have eyes, and therefore, some get lost in the migration from pool to pool.

These creatures dominate the water pools, as they are the only creatures that are capable of swimming.

On land, these creatures are very slow, and move like an earthworm, making them easy to pick off.

They feed off the Sik, which can become a problem, as the Sik have eyes, and are much faster, meaning they also starve easily.

The leads the pools to be littered with dead Zih at the bottoms of them.

The Ubt are waterbound creatures who float on the surface of the sulfur pools, they absorb nutrients from the vents below those volatile pools.

They're amorphous body allows them to move around, but even then, their movement is slow, and inconstant.

Deep sea evolution

Welcome to the deep sea!

Here we have 3 creatures all hanging around volcanic vents:

Ble – A crude cell. It is slightly photosynthetic. It has no form of locomotion and just rolls around on the ocean floor

Uing – A fat-bodied worm. It feeds mostly on debris put out from the vents.

Syx – An immobile predator. The Syx reaches out attempting to grab anything it can. It uses its roots to attach to the sides of volcanic vents.

Let us go forth and populate the deep sea!

Desert evolution

Welcome to the great desert. In front of you is an open landscape shaped with occasional hills and mountains. The heat here is oppressive and the land is cracked, dry, and dead. For a few months out of the year, the desert springs to life with these creatures:

Dico - A strange and fragile plant. During the dry months it shrivels and rolls across the landscape. When the rain comes the Dico hydrates and races to go to spore. Spores that land in pools form new young Dicos and the cycle begins anew.

Nish - Shelled invertebrates. Their dried eggs come to life in the vernal pools. They eat anything organic voraciously (including other Nish). When they can, they mate and their eggs dry as the wet season ends.

Iby - A weak mollusk. Its clear body is its main defense. It spends the wet months cooling and feeding in the waters. When the dry months come the Iby dig into the mud and cover themselves with mucus. They rely on their fat reserves until the next wet season brings fresh Dico.

Forsaken Plains

In the stretch of land between the great desert and the mountains lies an ancient land. Flesh stretches like a canvas across an alien landscape. There are no plants, or species of animals. The plains are their own species. Individual body parts form from the land – some are free moving, most are rooted in place. The free-moving creatures are called fleshlings – they are short-lived and have no impulses or instincts, they just jut around looking for other fleshlings to dine upon. The air here is heavy and wet and the weather is always warm. Patches of fur flow like grass in the humid wind. Occasionally pools of algae appear giving the landscape a vibrant green hue. Tumorous mounds grow the size of large hills and spikes of bone stand like naked trees.

This is the new home of the Syxiar Hominad, Xigz, Halon, and Hobo. (Some will also remain in their original biomes as well)

There are large pools of water-like fluid so the Syxiar Hominads can remain in their water-dwelling form.

There are 2 creatures that form other than the fleshlings:

Symbionts - slow moving and often root to anything they can get ahold of; they prefer mobile creatures. When attached they feed off the creature, but do no kill it. In exchange, they provide amazing eyesight to the mostly blind fleshlings. (yes, they can attach to the Hobos, Xigz, Syxiar, and Halon.)

Hum’yl – voracious bipeds. They drag their long mouths across the landscape gobbling up any fleshling unfortunate enough to get in its path. When they are ready to breed they attach their maw to the landscape and feed off it. The Hum’yl always bear 2 children that burst from the body of the “mother” when gestation is complete.

Archipelago Map Evolution

Same deal as the other one:

1) Pick a tile

2) Draw a rough outline of the continent/island

3) Make sure you connect to any open spaces if left in an adjacent tile

Try to make it look like the islands we see in the main map.

Sorry To Shill... But...

Hey users of the /evol/ board! I know I haven't been posting much recently… but… I've been retooling an idea I had when I first found out about Evogames a couple of months ago.

I present you: Janjira

Worry not, as I will still be active on this board, but I wanted to create sister board.

It's basically the same, but you follow one creature as it splinters out into various different creatures.

If this interests you, then follow along!

Fleshling evolution

This game will be similar to the no description game (which seems to have run its course), but with a twist. In the forsaken plains fleshlings are creatures that spring up from the landscape and live for a short period of time before their unstable genetics dissolve into a puddle of useless flesh. In this thread we will create some and have them slowly evolve overtime. The resulting creatures may or may not become relative or important to the over-all world of Nubterra.

This game is different in there are no starting creatures, just body parts that wonder around the landscape on their own. You can use pic related to help make a creature, or draw one up from scratch. Combine body parts from the list and/or feel free to add some I may have missed. After you design your creature, other players may evolve it as normal.

I have one major rule that must be followed at all times - == Make it weird ==

This game is inspired from a few things. First and foremost is the philosopher Empedocles who had a strange theory of evolution. He stated "Here sprang up many faces without necks, arms wandered without shoulders, unattached, and eyes strayed alone, in need of foreheads". Fun stuff!

If not already perfectly clear, this game takes place in the Forsaken Plains.

Shores Evoloution

SHORES:

The shores are a paradise for life, having many miles of water and area to grow, with easy access to the sun. In addition, the temperature is a lukewarm tempature, hardly damaging to any creature.

There are three creatures who have their hold in the shores.

The Sprun

This creature is a colony of smaller, identical cells. each cell is oblate with two tentacles on each end. This allows them to manipulate water and the nutrients floating through it. It pumps the water along it's body, distributing the nourishment equally along the cells. The cells grow and split individually, and decay into their basic parts as they die. They eat everything they can break down.

The Ayalt

The Ayalt is simple- it clings to the sand, other living objects, or the surface tension of the water. It uses photosynthesis to process nutrients from the water into proteins, and a substance similar to fat or sugar witch is energy rich. It produces oxygen from breaking down carbon dioxide.

The Clend

The clend is a mobile, small creature that lives in and plucks from Sprun. It reproduces "traumatically", hunting down another clend, tearing it open and placing small, virus like objects which uses the partially live body to produce many tiny clend. A clend has no gender, and the ripper passes on more genetic code then the rippee, because they tend to live longer, which drives up competition- rip or be ripped. They have no competitors but themselves as of yet, so they have little defense but an offense.

!!The shores have plenty of room for diversity, so it is rare for a species to be replaced when a new one evolves, unless one fills the same niche so well it destroys the competition completely.!!

R: 20 / I: 19 / P: 2

"The Depths" Evolution

The Depths. Below all the shallow caves, what some would call hell is located. Water is scarce, you will mostly end up finding steam or hot water geisers on the uppermost layers if you're lucky. The deeper you go the highest the temperature. Rockslides are common and if you go deep enough you may encounter lava pools.

In this hell somehow some life managed to thrive:

Sar:

A snail like creature that can survive by somehow absorbing the steam from the air with it's skin. It has one eye (meaning it has no depth perception) that can barely distinguish shapes and light from dark.

Tuor

A small turtle like creature with a hard carapace covering his lower body. Most of its skin has a thick cartilage underneath that helps him resist some of the heat.

Fya

A coral like plant that grows in ash and rock on the ceiling of and walls of caverns. It glows bright yellow in the dark and its roots often grow to the top layers in search for water. Once it matures the tips of its "tentacles" blow up spreading a foul-smelling spore that grows other plants.

R: 9 / I: 6 / P: 2

Krobbe Island

On a particular island, the early evolutionary forms of these creatures have been lost. We may only begin observing their changes in growth and features starting from their discovered state:

The Calgo are a race of tentacle-arachnoids with heavily armored faces, which many refer to as their mask. They tend to cluster near bodies of water to rehydrate their tentacles weekly. Their horizontal slit pupil is exceptionally good at seeing in poor lighting, making for excellent nocturnal hunters.

The Dillepi are a strange mammalian creature borrowing traits from other areas of the animal kingdom: they have talons as well as a segmented tail. They are omnivores, in that they eat insects and plants, but their stomach cannot handle meat. To mate, the males detach from their shells when in a "heat" state, and temporarily inhabit the shell space of as many female Dillepi before they die from the lack of their shell organs.

The Sha'Vang seem to be a creature either currently moving from a land-to-water state, or a water-to-land state. At this time, the results are inconclusive, but they seem to inhabit some areas of deep water as well as far inland. Their vision is better suited for mainland survival, but their rubbery skin and anatomical fins seem better adapted to the aquatic environment.

The Tungalo are an incredibly lightweight creature, despite their size. With hollow bones and thin blood, it seems their tongue is the heaviest part of their body as well as its strongest muscle. They seem to coil through tree branches as their primary resting home, as their small wingspan requires a large amount of their energy to travel through the air. Their tongues emit a weak acid that, over time, will soften organic structures like wood, which they then ingest in its chewy state. After a Tungalo eats, the increased mass in their stomachs makes them only capable of gliding. However, they seem to be able to go days without food.

Happy Evolving, people.

A happening

In the plains between the mountains and the great desert a being appears. He centralized here, but speaks directly to all the creatures of Nubterra.

"Sentience, alas!" The being cries out to the Halon of the mountains. It speaks not with words, but intentions.

"I call to those who like risk! The creatures of this world who seek to do more than scavenge for the scraps this world throws."

Each "player" must suggest a creature from any other game (except the no-description game) to join the ranks of the Halon. All you need to do is post in this thread the suggested creature with your trip/name.

This offering will end Thursday at midnight, don't miss out.

R: 41 / I: 37 / P: 2

Marsh Evolution

Welcome to the marsh! The land is covered in pools and rivers, some of which connect to the sea. In addition to there being water and muddy land everywhere there's also an abundance of heat and humidity, all of which are great for the creatures that live here.

The Yean are grass like plants whose roots function like stilts to keep it out of deeper pools. Despite its hard root and seed coverings it is frequently eaten.

The Nol are omnivorous amphibians that chew on Yean roots, Moi, Xiz, and whatever else they can fit their mouths around. Their coloring helps them blend in with the mud so they don't get eaten by larger Nol.

The Xiz are small, insectoid animals that tend to get eaten by everything else however their speed and small size does tend to help them out. They bury multiple Yean seedlings in the mud next to their eggs so their offspring have something to eat.

The Moi are primarily aquatic animals that have the ability to leave the water for a few hours at a time. They are very slow on ground and not much faster in water.

New game, something different.

I would like to start a new game with a slightly different factor - no descriptions. Just let the pictures speak for themselves. So, here are the rules:

1) Edit a creature

2) It replaces the former creature, unless the word "Split" is used.

Other than that, there is no need for a creature description. Simply edit as you see fit.

Mountain Evolution

Welcome to the mountain! Though not as dry as the desert, the mountain inhabitants still struggle finding water. Winter comes fast at this altitude and is very unforgiving. Here are the creatures available:

Alo - A simple mammal. It is herbivorous and its soft fur is designed to camouflage with snow. During harsh storms packs of Alo snuggle together to reserve warmth. Alos are very social creatures.

Dree - Tiny bird. Dree eat mostly fruit, nuts, and seeds from nearby vegetation. They nest high in trees and occasionally scavenge carcasses that have been bested by the cold.

Enti - A balloon-like creature. The enti possess no intellect or sensory organs. They create a gas inside a specialized bladder that allows them to float into the air. They can slowly release this gas to drop back down. They land on trees and suck the sap from them, often killing part of the tree as a result.

R: 19 / I: 14 / P: 2

Deep Sea 2: The Shallowing

Welcome to the Shallows!

>Tectonic plates in the deep sea begin to shift. The currents change drastically. The deep sea warms back up, but a strong current begins to pull the creatures from their deep sea, to a shallower part of the ocean. Here the water is significantly warmer.

> The current is one-way only, once a creature is dumped off here, it will remain here. It can adapt or die.

Although every deep sea creature has had a chance to be washed up here, only a handful have come to dominate the landscape.

Syxiar Nomad - A large beast. It walks on its "legs" across the ocean floor filtering food from the waters. It can also use its arm to manipulate objects.

Syxese - An immobile feeder with iridescent petals. It keeps its mouth open at all times and some creatures come and seek shelter inside its body. It snatches up most of these creatures as a food source. It is symbiotic with the Bleeck.

Bleeck - A boneless jelly-like creature. It is matriarchal with the "henchmen" serving the large mother bleeck. They attack as a group with the henchmen doing most of the work. The smaller bleeck seek shelter inside the syxese in return for easy meals.

Duilgus - Social detritivores. They feed on the fallen and have long hooks on the end of their fore-limbs. They roam the sands in tight packs.

Uing-Long - A hydrodynamic worm. It swims slowly though the ocean picking up easy prey. They use bio-luminescence to communicate.

Belgux Kirotmaka Lunhius - Titanic blobs. They roll around gathering mass (either food or new inhabitants to live inside it). They have become massive gelatinous cities. They emit small pulses of light.

Fanart

So let me cut to the chase:

I want to do some Fanart of this board, but I want you guys to choose what biomes I do. (I do enjoy pleasing a crowd from time to time)

So suggest away! I'll delete this post once I think I've accumulated enough data.

[Example of the last project I did like this {and yes, I still do hate the pictures}]:

Recruiting.

I'm actually curious how many people are still playing here. I feel that we need more people. Where are some good places to recruit for this board?

4chan is out because you can't even link to 8chan. I already posted on /tg/, /atheism/(I figured they would like evolution), and /qu/. Any other suggestions?

R: 9 / I: 5 / P: 2

Voat

Hey guys, just wanted to bring this to your attention. I started a thread not long ago about backing it all up. GMS!as0d4Rm7wU was kind enough to create a wiki and give the wheel to me, but updating the wiki will take some time (at the moment I have not started).

I also started a subverse over on Voat. It is a great site with a wonderful community, I even suspect a lot of cross over between voat and the chans. When I post there I need to link to an image hosting site, but I feel this will be a quick and easy way to archive creatures/threads. I would love for all of you very active players to sign up for voat and subscribe to https://voat.co/v/evol .

My greatest fear is losing everything we all have accomplished from some slider or troll. I also do not want to lose you guys either.

Side question - does anyone know how to save an entire thread in image format?

R: 12 / I: 1 / P: 2

Backing it all up

So I really love what we all have done here. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if it will last forever on 8chan. I am not putting an end to the game, quite the opposite. I want to immortalize it. I want it all to be backed up somewhere else. Problem is, I have no idea where. Does 8chan have an archive? A lot of my old evo games from 4chan, though archived are dead and gone.

I thought about voat.co - I have been a member since early July and it is a great place, it may even attract others to the game. Problem with Voat is - it needs an image host to post images. So it would all likely get backed up on Imgur and I have no idea how permanent that is.

I'm open to suggestions. I also want the few of us here to be tightly knit, maybe start a group somewhere that will allow us to stay in contact. I fear this will all be erased one day and we will have to start over (which I have had to do a couple times). If that does occur, I want not only the images, but the community to stay intact.

Pic unrelated.

Map Evolution

So before I do anything drastic and mix habitats together, we need to make a solid effort to map out our world so far. This will be a map of all land playable and can possibly change over time.

Because there are only a few of us, the rules will be simple:

1) Pick a tile

2) Draw a rough outline of the continent/island

3) Make sure you connect to any open spaces if left in an adjacent tile

I have marked the currently running games, so if you choose that tile make sure it makes sense (desert cannot be in the ocean/shores can't be in the middle of a continent).

I think this will be fun. Remember, this is our whole world - just a few pixels could be the size of England!

Introduction

Welcome to /evol/! Let the nubs be your guide.

This is a place to host evolution games, which is an image based game where one takes an image and changes it slightly. The new picture can either be a sub-species, or replace the main species. The rules are very loose and fun:

1) Take an image, alter it somehow, save as .PNG

2) Post the image with a short description on what has changed

Current game - >>>2

That’s really it. We don’t expect everyone to be an amazing artist, that’s not what the game is about. The core of the game is to have fun and build up an imaginary world full of crazy creatures. Remember, there is no winning or losing, don’t get upset if someone takes a creature and evolves it in a way you don’t like, just go with it.

This thread can be used to ask any questions about how these games work. I will also be posting examples and previous games.

Me, Life, Child

I want to apologize for my inactivity this past week. I am extremely happy that a few of you keep evolving and posting. If I'm not mistaken, there might even be a few new faces around here. This is all very exciting for me.

I am expecting my first child soon. On top of that, I have recently made a change of careers as well. The next few weeks will be a massive adjustment for me. I have no idea what my availability or sleep schedule will be like. I will try to drop in as frequently as I can, but I don't want to make any promises I can't keep.

I am not abandoning you, I still check this board every couple hours for new posts - each new creature filling me with joy. Keep on doing the lovely work you all have been doing and I will jump in whenever I can.

R: 27 / I: 2 / P: 3

Discussion

So I'm going to propose an idea and I want you to let me know if you are on board with it or not.

When I ran these games in the past, I always added events. These are changes that are meant to hasten evolution - really get a fire under the ass of DNA. These can be natural disasters, bacterial outbreaks, sunlight changes, really anything. At some point I will try to implement those.

Now the question: how would you feel about divine intervention? In my most successful games I used an ancient group of creatures called the "stygians". They were gods who had lost their natural bodies. All of them would give "gifts" to their followers which were randomly generated mutations. Does this sound like something most of you might be interested in?

R: 8 / I: 2 / P: 3

Science Thread

Alright /evol/-Knievels, this is your boy Darwinbrah.

I've been taking a look at the way this game's been going and have become disappointed in the lack of scientific backing and general astuteness behind the creation of different beings and the changes made. So I'm going to give a few lessons on a whenever I feel like it basis talking about how life happened and how it turned into all the neat little shapes and sizes it's come to on Earth.

It probably isn't as fascinating to you as it is to me, but if nothing else, the board needs some traffic. If I got anything wrong, just tell me. I'll do some extra research, then probably debate you on it.
