>Have to start jewing with the stream because no broadcaster gives a shit about sportscars

>Having to pay for grid girls at each race

>Don't want to pay the expense and so axe them under the guise of being a progressive

If a sponsor offered to sponsor a race and asked to be allowed to use grid girls like in other motorsports they would bend over in a second.

139d93 No.11026

>>11020

>Relatively poor/small series

The FIA fucked everyone out of the phenomenal rules that composed the group c world sports car championship. That raised costs, reduced performance, and ruined prestige for the second largest motorsport of the world.

This is the FIAs fault and bullshit can the FIA not afford grid girls when the WEC has become popular through f1 being fucked over. They never cited cost, they cited muh sexism. Don't defend them for reasons they haven't cited.

>>11026

I'm not defending them. I'm accusing them outright lying and making up excuses.

If it was a popular series it would have race sponsors and it would have proper tv deals. It has neither.

Drivers would be doing ads on TV for sponsors. They don't.

Even with F1 fucking itself over the WEC is still absolutely nowhere near it. It is why there is so many rumours about Audi joining F1.

The ACO would be the ones paying for them as the FIA isn't doing all the organisation and sexism would be a perfect cover for the fact they didn't want to pay to have grid girls with no sponsors on them lining up on the gird being shown on TV.

They would change immediately if they got proper sponsors who would be paying for them.

If Santander decided to sponsor the 6 hours of Silverstone next year they would have the Santander grid girls at that race.

139d93 No.11046

Do read up on Group C though. The rules had a maximum internal fuel capacity (100 liters) and 5 allowable fuel stops. You could have any engine or chassis (as long as it was with in the correct size category and closeroofed/covered wheeled) that was capable of doing this.

This would be a shitty rule set for f1 because f1 is sprint and thus displacement based racing, but for endurance racing, this made perfect sense. The cars were incredibly fast and asymmetry of performance allowed for cars with very different strengths and weaknesses. They harmonized the rule set with IMSA GTP, and created an amazing set of series with enormous manufacturer involvement.

Then the FIA decided that it was bad and needed to end, so they applied a displacement based formula ( 3.5 liters ) which is not the way to go for endurance racing. World sports car eventually collapsed under the costs that the significantly more restrictive formula created.

This is how I, and others on this board know that restriction on development increases, not decreases costs beyond the obvious.

I too appreciate the space efficiency of pushrods, especially with nostalgia for when you could drop a small block in any car. That said, you could do better in making dual overhead cam vee engines smaller if there were more emphasis on it.

In the US and europe there are laws that force cars to have extremely high hoods and high beltlines, and this (coupled with the fact that there are few longitudinal rear drive cars on the market) makes spending money on minimizing the dohc engines pointless.

GM did successfully put a small block in the transverse front drive buick lacrosse super, which is a feat of space efficiency for shit sure.

6c4a23 No.12668

>>12666

>In the US and europe there are laws that force cars to have extremely high hoods and high beltlines, and this (coupled with the fact that there are few longitudinal rear drive cars on the market) makes spending money on minimizing the dohc engines pointless.

IIRC, the hood height laws actually are relative to the highest point of the engine (for pedestrian safety), so a more compact engine would allow a lower hood, which then allows a lower beltline.

b633a8 No.12669

>>12668

Doesn't explain why cars from the mid 2000s that were also covered under these regulations that had pushrod engines also had enormously high hoods (chevy malibu maxx comes to mind). I see that there are laws that require space on top of the highest point of the engine, but there are also regulations that specify a high hood implicitly.

Requiring a high beltline, implicitly requires a high hood for structural and stylistic continuity.

I don't remember well now, but I read through the full US FMVSS when I thought it would be possible to import a car (it's not) and it's got something for everything.

ARCA isn't NASCAR, ARCA is ARCA

It's like F4 being a spec series.

There is just no way I can imagine the manufacturers involved in NASCAR to allow it to go spec and lose out all that advertising. Especially after the changes for Gen 6 in allowing the manufacturers more freedom in the looks of the car

It doesn't help either party.

F1 feeder series being spec is acceptable.

Driver's are meant to be proving their talent, not teams proving who has the most money.

b633a8 No.12780

>>12778

And while that is true, f3, f2, f3000, super formula, indy lights, and formula atlantic (feeder series) were not spec in the past. Before you accuse me of being a nostalgist, recognize that this did 3 major important things (by no means limited to these).

1. Non-spec feeder series trained more technical drivers that could develop cars more effectively and were more complete at an earlier stage in their career.

2. Non-spec feeder series reduced costs when there were multiple customer chassis avaliable and multiple engines available.

3. Non-spec feeder series produced teams that would later go up to f1.

If you ran a gp2 team and intended to go up to f1 now, you'd be seen as a loon (ART gp would have enormous support from mclaren so it'd be like haas f1 in terms of being effectively a customer), but back when formula 3000/F2 was going strong, Jordan, Pacific, Onyx, March , Osella, AGS, Minardi, Coloni, Forti, and probably half of the historic F1 grid came up from lower series and knew how to design, construct, maintain, fix, and develop cars instead of buying a spec chassis and having that be the end of it.

There have been successful compact dohc v8s. The Cosworth DFV is big for a 3 liter v8 because it is dohc among other reasons. CART had a DFX variant that was 2.65 liters and was turbocharged. There were major reworkings of this engine to improve packaging. The last was the Cosworth XF, which is tiny.

I couldn't find a good size comparison image, but the first image is the DFS and the second is the XF.

When you factor out the turbo ancillaries and plenum, it is a very compact dohc v8, proving that it is possible to do.
