Favorite chassis/car design Autophile 10/24/14 (Fri) 05:50:21 bb6df8 No. 15
Here, we post our top picks for chassis, design, and downright sexiness (interpret that however you may like.) Ill begin with the Ferrari 312T, for some reason, it and all its variants have always caught my eye. Image is of Carlos Reutemann in 1978 driving one of these hot-rods in Watkins Glen.

Lotus 72, I've always preferred the high airbox variants, and this picture caught my eye. >Lotus 72 as driven by Ronnie Peterson at the 1973 German Grand Prix (when they used to run the full Nurburgring)

Despite being a car from 1970, the DeTomaso 505-Cosworth has no rear bodywork and is simultaneously raucous and refined, just like the DeTomaso road cars. The gold wheels and Argentine flag stripes are nice touches as well.

The Lotus E22 because it has lopsided lady parts.

The Brabham BT52 (as driven by Nelson Piquet in the 1983 formula one season), of which there are many pictures involving fire. Gordon Murray has shown time and time again that he can make functional designs that are beautiful (the Mclaren F1 comes to mind). The extreme profile of this car and its narrowness, accentuated by the parmalat colors, makes it just a wild looking creation.

The twin chassis on the Lotus 88 is something to be appreciated. Even though it was banned before it even got to race :(

>>92 It kind of sucks that the moment the Lotus had another stroke of ingenuity, all the other teams got catty and had their car banned. Lotus even made sure to let the wardens know of the vehicles production, and got a pass.

>>3058 I went through my list of stuff that is beautiful but nothing beats the early/mid 70's F1 cars to me. They've got the massive rear wheels, the huge intakes, very early aero, it's amazing to look at.

I'm surprised these sex-machines weren't mentioned.
Williams had an institutional design philosophy of, "Don't bother with weight, fuel consumption or size; buy the biggest / strongest engine, drop the lump in the back and we'll build a car around it. "
Two great examples, pictured, featuring an active suspension and a monster V10 Renault engine.

The Rothmans livery on that car was just beautiful.

The most confusing thing ever was that BMS Scuderia Italia, which purchased cars from Dallara, ran red cars with a white Marlboro stripe longitudinal to the car. In 1993, Ferrari ditched the red on black, and went to a livery that was red with a white marlboro stripe.
When you watch the grainy video from back in the day, it's impossible to tell them apart.

If you hadn't pointed it out, I would have assumed it was the same car. Somehow Ferrari copied dallara, and not the other way around.
