Feel free to make any constructive suggestions. For the forseeable future, discussion of NASCAR, WEC/LeMans, Indycar, and other motorsport series will be allowed. It is preferable that discussion be related back to F1, but not required.

What happened to Auto Union?

983508 No.184

Auto Union the team folded after the start of the second world war because grand prix racing stopped for those 7 years.

Auto Union the company merged with NSU and eventually was propped up by the German state enough times that it became Audi (hence the logo being the same).

Fun Fact: Horch (one of the companies that merged to form Auto Union) means "listen" in german; "Audi" means listen in latin. Clever.

Fun Fact 2: Volkswagen Group has from time to time considered rebranding as Auto Union since that is more descriptive of the large multi-brand company it has become than "Volkswagen" alone is.

Hey, can you name yourself "Autounionguy" I think that would really meld with our forum here. It would also make you spontaneously 10x cooler.

For one, competing in Formula One is very expensive. Audi races in WEC (World Endurance Championship) and is very successful there. Volkswagen owns Porsche as well, and Porsche has recently had their own WEC/LeMans program. There are rumors that Volkswagen does not want to have two WEC teams and wants to enter Formula One, but there is no proof of that yet. Lastly, Audi hasn't been involved in F1 for a long time, so why would they enter now?
I think it would be cool to see more companies return to F1, but there isn't really any evidence that that is happening yet.

Also worth noting: Porsche was directly involved in F1 for a very short period of time. From the mid fifties into the early 60s, Porsche was a mildly successful F1 constructor, Dan Gurney, an American driver, scored their only win.

Porsche also designed the TAG engines used by McLaren in the 80s, and the terrible engines used by Footwork in the 1991 season.

Don't worry, you don't have to be Auto Union guy.

Unrelated Autistic Fact of the Day : Are you aware that Jody Sheckter, 1979 world champion, runs a biodynamic farm in England known as "Laverstroke Park Farm?" A Friend and I have tried one of his beverages before, it was excellent.

Auto Union Guy, why, oh why, do you blow my mind?
