Just watched the race, nicely chaotic, overtaking everywhere, easily the best this year.
Bit unfortunate from a Finnish standpoint, both drivers would've gotten good points and had to retire essentially not because their own mistakes.
Hamilton's antics were hilarious to see, I guess he has forgotten how to race and thinks he is invincible so he just pushes like in a noob in playstation, going off the track all the time or crashing to others. Although I'd say his crash with Ricciardo and following clusterfuck of a track presence by him lead into Verstappen going too close to Bottas and slashing his tire so fuck you Hamilton. Even secondberg had bad luck while he could've easily made the gap smaller in standings.
Tribute to Jules was nice in the beginning, and it didn't even bother that they started playing the national anthem since it actually fit very well on the background (whereas Canada style would've been disastrous), very emotional scene.

longer car, especially by way of longer wheelbase makes a more stable car (which is often a disadvantage on difficult technical tracks of which we pretty much have none) and, more importantly allows a narrower car and thus better aero.
The aero improvement is likely the reason.
This year's cars and last years cars have (in recognition of the power deficit that these cars have) become longer.
Backmarker 07/31/15 (Fri) 07:37:09 48b57f No. 17966

Even though width has been consistent over time (except from 1998 to now at 1.8 meters), a big part of the perception of scale is the height and bulk.
Modern f1 cars (especially from 1995 onwards, thanks senna) are much taller and bulkier than their predecessors despite similar width. The cars have gotten longer for aero purposes when engine development was limited (thanks mosley).
If you look at these pictures (the first is maggie and colin chapman with the revolutionary lotus 88) (the second is andrea de cesaris, who was not particularly tall, pushing his crippled jordan 191 over the line to finish 4th) you will see that f1 cars were pretty low profile and small looking despite mostly consistent width.

http://www.theverge.com/2015/7/29/8822041/closed-cockpit-f1-concept-car-open-wheel-racing
It's cool that there are occasionally articles aimed at mainstream readers authored by long-time fans but it's too bad this one has gone full reddit. His premise is that the sport is dying, but in the US at least that isn't true. Closed cockpits are a knee-jerk reaction, even the Bianchi so-called investigation said the aim should be to reduce the impulse on the car/driver during a crash rather than try to make the car even more rigid. What's missing from that fighter jet metaphor is the presence of an ejector seat, which would also be ridiculous and Bond-esque. Once we have 3D 400kph "rainbow road" tilkedromes with loop-de-loops and other junk there can be enclosed cockpits but there are so many other factors at play in the Massa/Bianchi incidents that they really shouldn't be invoked arguing to newfags such as that article is intending.

Only the most stubborn Hamilton fan wouldn't love this first lap. Sure it was a shit lap for him, but there were battles all over the place and unexpected events. It's just great.
And it really shows that the worst thing about the current formula is the huge gap in relative performances between the cars. Ferraris were as fast as Mercedes that weekend so we had fun. At Silverstone, in the beginning the Williams were about as fast as the Mercedes and it was a good show.
I'm pretty sure that even on the most boring Tilkedrome we can have some good racing if the cars are comparably fast.

Not exactly. Mercedes have been repeatedly fucking up on the start and it is becoming more of an issue from them. Generally, if merc fuck up at the start, they do bad throughout the entire race.
>f1 isn't dead guys, this formula isn't bad
It isn't, and that's not based on my opinion in the post you responded to. The new clutch rule at the start will change everything about the usual starts you are used to. Then in '17 Formula 1 will be reborn imo.

At least it works, unlike a proposal made by some Hamilton that was so shitty you couldn't see anything.
I'm not against it, but I don't see any point. DRS is clearly visible on the car unlike push to pass, and F1 is the sort of sport where you basically only care about where are the first 5 drivers so you don't need to know which position which driver is in.
But introducing that pretending it will raise TV ratings is bullshit. On TV you have the rankings and pit stop times and usually if someone on screen enables anything commentators will comment, because it's their job. It could be interesting for on-track spectators though.

It's not a gimmick that really affects anything, that's probably why people don't care. At least that's why I don't care about some flashy lights on the roll hoop. It won't fix any of the issues, but at least it won't make it worse.
If F1 was to trade away DRS for an LCD screen I would be very happy. I can't understand why FIA/FOM/teams/whatever are scared of removing DRS though. It's probably the #1 complaint people have on F1, and disabling it seems easy and wouldn't have a huge impact on the racing.

It further establishes the idea that F1 exists to entertain first, and to be a sport second.
For instance, complaining that the cars are ugly may be a legitimate complaint, but asserting that the solution to that is to have f1 cars that are more spec, or "styled" by the FIA is insulting to the sport.
This gimmick further normalizes shit like push to pass.
neither marathon runners, nor tour de france participants, nor olympic sprinters are required to wear a sign demarcating their current position. And while it may be easy to see where the sprinter is in the field, it may be difficult to visually identify the front runners in a marathon or endurance event. Even so, they have not disparaged the sport by adding anti drag flaps to helmets that can only be engaged on straight aways and number signs indicating their current position.
Sure the tour de france is entertaining, but it is entertaining because it is a competitive and pure sport (save for the doping), not because it is artificially made better for the spectators or tv audience.

IMO it's really a non-issue, and I don't see why a bunch of flashing lights normalizes gimmicks that actually influence racing. The point of watching a sport for entertainment is the sport itself, and fixing that would require removing all the other stupid things that have an actual influence on racing.

It wouldn't be that hard to put on a bike. You could just put on the wheel.
Heck easy place to have some extra ad placement if it dynamically changed.
You might have to run stages at night but then that has the bonus of making the tour de france less boring to watch.
Especially if they ran it at Col de Turini so it would basically be the Monte Carlo rally (I know they have done it before).
>Even so, they have not disparaged the sport by adding anti drag flaps to helmets that can only be engaged on straight aways
With the current thing about mechanical doping I can easily see them standardising it and basically introducing KERS.
Standard motor and battery and hook it up to the wheel light so big lightning bolt is shown when they use to show off to the spectators. Maybe have a little battery gauge to show how much charge they have left for attacks.
They will argue that it's easier to just allow it in some form then try to police it by x-raying every bike. And making the bikes faster will bring in more fans and tv viewers.
Maybe they will even claim they are trying to make the tour road relevant as normal bikes have motors on them now.

I'm not attacking you as if you were are fan of push to pass, I'm just pointing out that this idea that we're willing to modify the cars for perceived viewer enjoyment is the last thing that f1 needs right now.
>The point of watching a sport for entertainment is the sport itself
You're right, but the dangerous fact is that there are noob or just retarded fans of f1 that legitimately think it is a show and a show only. A quick skim through plebbit (which is one of the largest f1 boards on the internet, retarded as it is) produces numerous threads asking why f1 isnt as close or exciting as GP2 or indycar.

And we could put propulsion fans on the back of sprinters or exoskeletons that accelerate foot movements on marathon runners.
Just because we can doesn't mean we should. Putting KERS on tour de france bikes defeats the whole point because it is no longer the same sport. It misses the point.
Imagine a mutant league baseball, where everyone could use whatever drug, and cyborgs could compete, and every possible thing that wasn't already covered in sponsor stickers, is now.
It would probably be entertaining for a bit, people would be curious for sure. But it would fall off and die eventually (or at least suck in its zombie state) because it would no longer be a sport, it would be a shit show.
The WWE tried something similar to this. It was called the XFL (WWE football league). The whole thing was officially not staged, and was somewhat competitive, but it was so artificial in that there was made up trash talking, and announcers that hyped conflicts that werent there, and "Storylines".
Even vince mcmahon admitted it was a mistake.
Shame that it's been 15 years and motorsport can't learn from this.

The thing I dislike about Indy currently is this "ghostly" push to pass shit. Why is it such a mystery, even for the commentators? It should be openly available to everyone and not be some mysterious thing that drivers use "behind our backs".
Also, the amount of time that they have increased HP is fucking disturbing. Shouldn't it be less? I mean, come on.
I also don't really understand the aerodynamic rules. Do they even have a limit on how radical they can get? Some cars look so different from others it's ridiculous.

The criticism was genuine, the compliments were facetious (aka you were right).
In a nutshell:
IndyCar (under CART sanction) used to be an open 2.65 liter turbocharged formula. It was very much like Formula 1 of past years in that there was much technical freedom, and many routes to success/performance. Over the years, it became very successful even outside the U.S. and demand became enormous. Countries in Europe and the Americas started building tracks (ovals and road courses) to accommodate Indy racing. Reigning f1 world champion went to CART to win the title, Michael Andretti went to F1 from Indy, Jacques Villeneuve won the last real indy 500, and promptly went to F1.
In 1995 Tony George (heir to the Hulman family, and owner of the Indianapolis motor speedway) threw a hissy fit that the sport was so successful and that he only owned the one track. He created a rival series called the Indy Racing League. Despite CART being far better racing with more talented drivers and better teams, the IRL won out for a number of reasons including control of the Indy 500 event.
Tony George's series claimed that they had more American drivers, an all oval schedule, and a cheaper to operate (not actually though) spec car.
In the end the IRL killed American open wheel racing and even with enormous money being brought in by the CEO of Hulman and Company (Mark Miles) the series is still crap.
Recently, there were a number of high profile crashes in practice for the indy500 that looked embarrassing as the aero kits (limited body work that Chevy and Honda are allowed) failed to keep the cars from flying into the catch fencing.
More recently than that, especially at Fontana (where the stands were empty), the racing became pack racing, where there are rows after rows of cars going around the oval three-wide. This is dangerous because one crash takes out the whole field (see Las Vegas Dan Wheldon crash, so much for making Indy safer Tony). Spec cars with aero that heavily incentivizes the draft will inevitably make these non-talent-rewarding deathtraps.
Large amounts of criticism from drivers came out making fun of the level of danger for a tiny crowd.
Ed Carpenter (step son of Tony George and driver) attacked the drivers that criticized IndyCar ( http://motorsportstalk.nbcsports.com/2015/07/01/ed-carpenter-driver-criticism-of-indycar-confusing-for-fans/ ). Promptly everyone called him a shill, and that was that.
Mark Miles (head of IndyCar) just passed a policy threatening nebulous charges and license suspension for any driver or team member that insults this rapidly dying sport. http://www.racer.com/indycar/item/119488-indycar-series-imposes-strict-guidelines-for-competitor-conduct#
When people called this a gag rule, Mark Miles claimed it wasn't a gag rule, but a rule providing IndyCar "authority to act when we feel it is required." http://www.racer.com/indycar/item/119493-indycar-miles-clarifies-competitor-conduct-rule
Yeah, so Indy blows and has a gag rule.

There is a difference between an accident happening, and ignoring safety.
For example:
People should get over Bianchi's crash. It was a freak event, and no one could have foresaw it.
However, if they parked a tractor there before the race, and everyone told them it was too dangerous, but the FIA told them to shut up and said there was nothing to worry about, wouldn't that change your opinion of Bianchi's eventual crash?

>The thing I dislike about Indy currently is this "ghostly" push to pass shit. Why is it such a mystery, even for the commentators? It should be openly available to everyone and not be some mysterious thing that drivers use "behind our backs".
There was a genuine reason for this but I've forgotten it. The commentators used to (as in last season) know how many they had left and when they were using them.

Shit they changed it before Toronto
>IndyCar will no longer display push-to-pass counts and usage on timing screens in an effort to encourage overtaking on road and street courses.
>Previously, the series' standard timing screen had included both the amount of push-to-passes that each entrant had left, as well as indicating in real time when each driver was activating the system.
>That information will be removed for Sunday's race race in Toronto, with the change to remain in effect until at least the end of the season.
>"Unfortunately, the information given to the teams on the push-to-pass function has tended to be used as a defensive measure," said Derrick Walker, IndyCar president of competition and operations. "The driver being overtaken activates his or her own P2P [push-to-pass] to defend – which defeats the intention of P2P, obviously.
>"We will limit the availability of that information, which will make things interesting, particularly late in the race."
>The push-to-pass system adds an estimated 50 horsepower per use, with each engagement lasting 20 seconds. Drivers are allocated 10 push-to-passes for each street and road course race.
>Series officials will continue to monitor each car's push-to-pass usage from race control.

More to the point, none of these retards realise this is a staged event. Both vehicles had to be on track and look as if they were fighting without really fighting. Just a bit of show for the people watching.
Same with this "race" between an F1n a V8SC and some motorbike. It wasn't a MotoGP because it wouldn't have been interesting, and perhaps because Red Bull wanted to have the F1 come on top to make their programme look good or whatever. And yet, bike tards are all over the comment section whining about how it wasn't an actual race bike and more bullshit.
They sound so fucking insecure. Almost like they're trying to justify their death machines by having to spout how great they are in every single fucking occasion. They remind me a bit of Apple users, spouting how great their piece of aluminium is.

>They sound so fucking insecure. Almost like they're trying to justify their death machines by having to spout how great they are in every single fucking occasion. They remind me a bit of Apple users, spouting how great their piece of aluminium is.
Sports bike riders have incredibly fragile egos.
I tend to drive like a leadfoot tard, so I'm always quick away from a set of traffic lights, and damn near every time I'm next to a sports bike, as soon as they see that I have out-accelerated them, they have to speed up and "beat" me.
I once had a biketard tell me it's because the biker wants to get clear of traffic for "safety".
Yet strangely enough, I've almost never experienced it with cruiser riders, only sports bike fags….

I've been to a couple of the road/track races this year, and there were plenty of spectators, and I personally enjoyed the racing, and its become a yearly thing to go to. However, I totally don't care about Indy when it comes to the oval tracks, I feel like the oval tracks kill enthusiasm. I remember after Toronto, a commentator said 'and its all left turns for Indy until mid-Ohio!'. Fuck man, I know this is a murrica based sport, but fuck ovals. The only reason ovals exist is because back in mid century there was no other viable way for spectators to watch the whole race (cameras/tv) so they wanted ovals in order to see the whole race, even though the whole race was boring AF. If there were more races like Toronto/St. Petersburg I think the sport would get more of a following. But this is murrica, so

My comment was more in reference to the fact that no one seems to be aware of the difference.
I recognize that CART had the right to the IndyCar mark until the lawsuit.
As an aside. It is interesting to note that the term champcar predates the term indycar in wide usage.

Funny that he has to use the throttle to move the car's ass around the corner.
Are there any videos of the Monza combined layout? The movie grandprix is the only example I can think of that have the full course without the chicanes, with the faster lesmos and the oval.

>Abiteboul said that when his company finally gave the green light for their use, then Renault's teams should expect a proper jump up the grid.
>“I want it to be a visible difference, so not just a difference that can be seen with the performance engineer on the laptop looking at the telemetry,” he said. “I want it to be a difference that can be seen in the lap time.
>“It is not the type of difference that will allow Red Bull to catch up with Mercedes, let's be frank about that, but it will be a substantial fraction of the deficit we have to Mercedes.”

Not a lot to be fair. They would have to turn into Honda to make it worse.
But it don't really see it being relevant. It may give them an edge over Williams and fight for 5th place, but I don't see them catching Ferrari. Unless Renault found out they were using old Twingo cylinder heads instead of actual F1 parts or that someone forgot half the valves.

That was just cheap. If they wanted better safety they could put stronger fences or put the spectators further from the track but either of those things would require spending money. Stealing a 50kph speed limit sign and putting it is way cheaper.

To be fair they have played it relatively safe with crash barriers, people a decent way back and chicanes which are crash safe instead of concrete slabs or a giant pile of dirt.
Frankly the brazilian touring car series is worse with general safety.
In fact Brazilian truck racing is the worst as the crazy hue monkeys run them unlimited.
