2435ca No.21299

>Williams has vowed to put up a fight should Monday's latest Strategy Group meeting reveal Formula 1's 2017 revamp will cause costs to rise.

>Other than an increase in front-and-rear-tyre width, specific technical details have yet to be released with regard to the build of cars whose stated aim is to be five-to-six-seconds-per-lap quicker than at present.

>The understanding among the teams is there will be no significant rise in costs at a time when F1 has long been trying to reduce financial overheads.

>The financial impact of 2017 is due to be aired on Monday, with Williams ready to push against potential increases.

So we have apparently 'major' regulation changes that aren't set out.

They are going to apparently increase speed to 04 levels but nobody knows how.

They are almost certainly going to raise costs which are already stupidly too high.

Pirelli aren't in a contract for the new tyre regs yet and will only agree to it if they get more testing which won't happen.

And they only have a year and a bit to set the regulations and let the teams/manufacturers/Pirelli prepare for the 'major' changes.

What a fucking shitshow

IMO the only way to raise the pace that much in a year without totally changing the regs is to bring back refueling.

>Pirelli doesn't want it since nobody will talk about tires anymore

>FIA won't do it since the fuel limit would certainly be scrapped

>the Berns probably just wants to go back to the 3.5L formula and he has 1/3 of the strategy group votes

So basically just undo all the rule changes from the last 10 years and the pace will come back.

2435ca No.21304

The teams don't want it either because they all complain about the cost rise that they believe would happen.

>>21305

Probably preaching to the choir here, but the teams really shouldn't be a part of the so-called strategy group. Not that it's necessarily a good idea to have a strategy group, but for the dramatic changes required it's better to not have a democracy since the teams all have their own interests at heart and drag out the process.

649d32 No.21307

>>21306

Yeah, the team that is currently in dominance doesn't want changes. Or if a team comes up with a nice idea, the other teams will vote against it and try to ban it because they can't adjust their car to fit this tech.

And when they do agree to changes they play a game of rules roulette where they make sure that the winning team gets a lock in of dominance.

Pretty certain that would get all the busybody groups and yellow press of Britain to lose their shit; Thus, it won't go anywhere and it will end up being counter-productive in the end. Finland you know as well as I do that EU legislation does not just get 'overturned'

Even if we were to exit from europe that still means all the other countries still have the ban on advertising and therefore it wouldn't be profitable.

It's a cultural issue more than anything. For every 1 of us who feels that cigarette advertising would be a big boost to F1 financially you have another 10 who feel cigarettes should be banned and smokers prosecuted.

Or at the very least not allowed any form of benefits or any access to the NHS.

A lot of stuff to transmit at 400fps and FOM already has issues with the wavelengths they can transmit on from race to race.

I imagine it will have a data logger and it will just record.

I want to know if it will be constantly on or not.

If it is crash activated I could see it missing say a Justin Wilson style accident where you really want to see the moment of impact with the head not a fraction after.

It would be typical FIA to do it that way

Cost caps? Banning Wind Tunnels?

GG

29ddc3 No.21707

>>21706

It will never pass.

As I posted before, it's literally this tactic:

https://vimeo.com/114268666

Engine costs caps aren't a bad idea, but no one wants wind tunnels bans.

caecbb No.21708

>>21706

Nothing like making old teams even more entrenched with their existing knowledge of aerodynamics.

5ff679 No.21709

>>21706

There's an implication in there that the engine suppliers are supposedly tacking on megabucks (like 40% or so?) over the actual manufacturing cost… which I find very doubtful and even if true they're just trying to recoup the giant R&D spending.

Pic is of Mercedes HPP at the end of the V8 era, just an example of how many people are required on the "works" side. IIRC Mercedes has 700 employees at Brackley plus however many at HPP, meanwhile Force India has 400 or so.

>people who will not have jobs if this goes on

29ddc3 No.21710

>>21709

Mercedes spent over half a billion on their F1 program last year

Mercedes as a company spends 20 million a day on R&D

The proposal is only asking the engine prices to be reduced from 20 million to 10 million.

That's 30 million over 3 supplies teams.

>it brings the engines to the costs of the old V8s

>lets not forget it was the manufacturers that forced these new engines

It's fuck all for Mercedes, and would make a huge difference to the financial health of independent teams.

85cdc6 No.21711

>>21707

Why would engine cost caps ever be a good idea? At best that will make the suppliers eat the enormous r&d cost in full, at worst (and most likely) they'll reduce their spending on the development of the engine, leaving customer teams with expensive and still shit engines.

You cannot get a free lunch, the costs will surface somewhere. The only smart move is to return to an engine formula that makes sense and is sustainable (3.5 liter)

85cdc6 No.21712

>>21710

>>lets not forget it was the manufacturers that forced these new engines

That's a lie. Renault said they would leave without them and that's happening anyway. Mercedes liked the cheapness of the v8s as did Ferrari, VW asked for 4 cylinder engines which was rejected.

29ddc3 No.21713

>>21711

>The only smart move is to return to an engine formula that makes sense and is sustainable (3.5 liter)

Yep.

But if the manufacturers want to force their shitty and expensive hybrid V6's on everyone, then why shouldn't they pay the cost difference over a sustainable engine formula?

85cdc6 No.21714

>>21712

Todt did this. This was always his agenda. He may have asked the teams what they thought about it, but it was a question of what alterations they would make to todts hybrid clusterfuck, not a question of whether they would have it.

85cdc6 No.21718

>>21713

As much as I enjoy the Schadenfreude of Renault paying for being the sole advocate of this hybrid garbage, a reverse of punitive powers will not help anyone. Companies have budgets and are not stupid, they will find a way to make those costs surface elsewhere.

a7fa7b No.21719

>>21711

Considering how little money (relatively) there is in F1, yeah. There's a reason why for customer level cars, you cannot have cheap, technologically advanced and powerful at the same time. It just doesn't work that way.

Banning wind tunnels is stupid.

It feels like they cannot find a way to cut costs without locking up the entire field for the season. It wouldn't be too bad if the field was more or less equal.

The only thing wind tunnel ban is going to do is increase the sales of CAD simulators that have a wind tunnel plugin.

>there are ties between Todt and Dassault

>Dassault builds among the world's most advanced CAD programs

>hurr hurr conspiracy

a7fa7b No.21720

>>21718

If I read correctly, the deal is about the engine itself. Maybe they'll just double the price of the engineers or ask more money for better support. Maybe if you pay enough, you'll have a team dedicated to your engine that will help fine tune the chassis to the engine and vice versa.

000000 No.21721

>To be fair, you did bring up golden dawn

Yeah, as a fantasy it would be kinda fun to have a full on old school Mercedes v. Auto Union grudgematch with 3+ car teams but in reality with these regulations it would just be the same podium every race.

Really I should be pulling for enough teams to go bankrupt that Bernie's deals with the promoters are all void and the sport collapses, but that would be a bit rough. Tbh F1 needs to die instead of fading away like it is now for there to be any hope of ever regaining the kind of speed/freedom in regs that's at the core of the sport.

Louis is on my team so I get 15 points or something whenever he's on pole as an insurance policy (11/12 GP this year). I think no matter where they qualify the Mercs can just use so much more power and have such a pace advantage that even if it's theoretically hard to overtake around Singapore they're going to end up 1-2 in the race. Rosberg is actually better around Singapore than Louis imo so their order is the same. Got a good feeling about tricciardo in P3 but I'm going to sub out Gimi for Seb on FL.

Switching Nasa for RSI though since he's been getting btfo by Ericsson of all people. All Rossi has to do is make up places when people retire and it's easy points.

He was pretty good when he debuted in F1.

But holy fuck he forgot how to drive within a few years.

His talent level drop off is amazing really.

I agree that Häkkinen is not the best Finnish driver in F1. Even JJ Lehto and Mika Salo were better than him. Häkkinen did scare Schumi but I think any other Finn in a Newey car would scare him shitless.

>>21946

Yeah, he stopped giving a shit after 1997. He's the French-Canadian Räikkönen.

Some interesting rumor mongering from Eddie Jordan:

https://vid.me/YdCg

>Rossi with a seat at Manor Mercedes for 2016, at Mercedes behest for the American market, makes a lot of sense.

Weird, Fiftybucks removed the video, and is just linking the Sky site on his Twitter now.

I swear he is never that confident.

Also if VW took over Red Bull as Audi would VW also take over Toro Rosso as another brand?

Like Red Bull-Audi & Toro Rosso-Lamborghini?

85cdc6 No.21968

>>21964

Why would they ever do that? That's a terrible idea. F1 popularity in the us is pretty much at an all time low, nobody who buys a Mercedes even knows they own brawn gp and illmor. An American driver wouldn't change shit.

Having a local driver does huge things to attract casual fan scum.

F1 got much more popular here when Webber got a drive.

the LMP1 hybrid formula seems more natural since the teams can put out so much more power. the ERS in F1 is pretty much there to make up for hp lost by downsizing the ICE rather than to add anything.

plus there's some fun stuff

>windscreen-sized tear-offs

>synchronized pitstops of both team cars instead of stacking

>constantly lapping other classes

>Ferrari taking out LMP1's because why not

Even the three Fiat 500s at Bathurst never caused as many problems as they do.

>tfw no Fiat 500 class at Le Mans just for the joy of seeing those tiny little things go down such huge straights while being passed by LMP1s

why is wec so much better than current f1?

85cdc6 No.21985

>>21982

Better doesn't mean much in the same way that comparing a dying person to a corpse doesn't make the former a symbol of health.

>>21984

It isn't. A company is literally racing itself. The next competitor is leagues behind. The only reason that there's any competitiveness is that no one cares enough about WEC to spend enough money to dominate.

85cdc6 No.21986

Just as today's F1 is garbage compared to just about any previous era, WEC is garbage compared to pretty much any previous era (save for the notable period in which the FIA killed it by ending group c and everyone left).
