This was actually really interesting.
The Senna fanboy version is that Senna was so much faster than everyone else, had almost lapped the entire field, and crashed when pushing to do just that.
What really happened, was Burger beat Prost to the first corner, and then Bernoldi'd him with the much slower Ferrari, allowing Senna to run away from the field in the much faster than everyone else McLaren, eventually getting to be 50+ seconds clear of Burger in second, with Prost in 3rd.
When Prost finally got past Burger after 54 laps, he immediately starting doing fastest laps, some two seconds a lap faster than Burger. Senna then responded to Prost's pace, did a fastest lap of his own, then stuffed it in the wall.

There was only 20 or so laps left when Prost got past Burger, and he was over 50 seconds behind. Even if he was 2 seconds a lap, every lap, faster than Senna, Prost was not going to catch Senna enough to even see him.
He could however, use Senna's massive "hurr hurr I'm the fastest" ego against him to pressure him in to a mistake… which he did.

Suzuka 1989 comes to mind in terms of Prost encouraging Senna to use up his tires and chase, only to be unable to pass on the straights due to the differing downforce levels, leading to that really "ambitious" overtake attempt. Italy 1991 had a good video (albeit with pushy annotations from an avowed Hamilfag) about how Patrese+Mansell pushed Senna hard enough to require an extra stop but I can't find it on youtube.
Instead take as evidence their fastest laps: 19 for Senna v. 41 for Prost

Those people must be retarded.
When f1 was v10 only (which is a stupid Mosley era rule, he also mandated that engines had to have a minimum weight) the Ferrari was dominant because of Schumacher and because of good design synergy between the engine and chassis. The Renault engine had the lowest center of gravity, the BMW had the most power, its not as if 3 liter engines automatically put the prancing horse on top, especially as there was more than one way to have a good engine.

>A few months ago I was at the Gowran Festival of Speed. I was invited there to put on an Autotesting display to help promote our struggling sport and Freddie Hunt was also in attendance driving his father James Hunt's Hesketh F1 car out on track.
>Another display driver said he would love to have hunt drive his car as he could say Hunt drove the car and it would be good publicity. I talked to Freddie and organised the test drive in the car for the following day.
>The time came for Hunt's run in the car so we invited him over to the test site which was a wide area with more than enough space for an autotest car. The only obstacle was a metal post with a large canopy in the dead centre of the test, which had autotest pylons placed around it to make it even more visible.
