American Motors was pretty experimental in that they participated in road racing more than other manufacturers, that you could buy homologation specials from dealers, and you could put a big block and a 4 speed in pretty much any of their cars.

Not sure about which block you're talking about, but if that's the signed firmware thing you can still install OpenWRT on your box. Just a bit harder.
I have a TL-WDR3600 which costs like 60 euros, handles about 900 Mbps over LAN (point to point transfer with CAT 5e cables on two W10 machines), has consistent WLAN performance with 8 stations connected nearly all day and even 2 USB ports for a cheap network backup setup.

Interesting. It had been my plan to get a 3600 for WRT a while ago, but never got around to it.
Saw a forum post the other day while looking for a new router, and it mentioned TP-link stopping WRT installs, so I crossed it off my list.
Guess I better go do some more research.

Now, the team was always partially separate from the car company (for tax reasons, because Chapman had some good evasion schemes), but they were functionally the same company (sharing facilities and technology with the f1 factory down the block from the cars factory).
That's kind of weird that competing automakers would do that. Can you think of another example of something like this?

Missed a kinda one: Williams ran in the late 70s as "Saudia Williams", had sponsorship from the BinLaden company, would prevent it's drivers from drinking alcohol on the podium (they drank orange juice or lilt), would wave the saudi flag upon victory, and also had sponsorship from British Leyland, so the cars were badged as Leylands.
Thus a Leyland car was running with a Ford motor (granted with the Judd cam and tune that gave them some 20 hp on the works ford motors).

You have a say in 8chan's future Burgermeister ## Board Owner 01/25/16 (Mon) 20:52:44 ea710c No. 33078
Here is the link to the Poal.me that is intended to decide 8chan's next course of action.
http://www.poal.me/1kvhve
The choice is yours, but I would Highly Recommend you choose that we move forward with infinity next after making improvements to the current software as a stop gap. It will be re-branded and developed by other people (who have a credible track record on chan projects) Josh/Null is no longer involved because he had a high profile hissy fit.
Infinity next will be modified such that it resembles our current software and functions faster with huge improvements on the backend. (this is the purple option)
Vichan (the current software) can be optimized and this is another viable option. This does mean that more work will have to be done for any increase in speed or features than would be required for the same changes in next. (this is the light blue- greenish option)
To delete everything and bail to lynxchan is a mess because there will be no migration of data from 8chan and this is not 8chan's software. Additionally, it seems a waste after building up our own code base at a cost of 12,000 plus dollars to abandon software that has the major roadblock (null/josh) removed). (this is the darker blue option)
You are welcome to choose whatever (including the just fuck my shit up option) but to throw away your votes would be silly.

remember the weather at Austin last year? and buried in the news coverage were reports of the local police running amok with many hundreds of citations for out-of-towners who temporarily left their cars in places they wouldn't normally due to flooding and traffic so forth.
if like reasonable people their reactions were "fuck you, I ain't paying this and I'm not driving all the way back to fucking Texas to show up in court" good news! the state has now installed automatic plate readers along with convenient debit card readers right in the patrol car! and the best part is it doesn't cost TX anything because they sell on the data for the readers and the payment processor gets an added service fee:

The EFF is like the ACLU of the internet, they only care about your rights when it is politically expedient for them. Just as the ACLU has had its advocates come out against gun rights (notably they claim the second amendment is a collective right, unlike the other 9) the EFF has issued a number of statements where they claim that hate speech is not protected free speech (https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/01/facing-challenge-online-harassment ).

His point about expenditure on aero is retarded. Teams are going to spend what they can to get the desired level of performance, more aero freedom allows them to spend the same exorbitant amount of money, but actually get useful gains from it.
2 meter width cars and an end to flat floors would solve the whole muh aero debacle.
notice that the majority of complaints about cars not being able to follow closely happened after grooved tires, narrow wings, and narrow cars were mandated.

No doubt there is a general undercurrent on anonymous message boards to go against the grain of popular media, and that's gonna attract poltards, but I fail to see why Hillary sucking dicks breaks on political grounds.
There's a line between the "does it make sense to you?" skepticism that borders on the political (like with guns above) and just going on wild tangents about black people and jews and the conspiracy against the white race.
It's true that political topics have come up more than they probably should on an f1 board, but it's the off season and people are bored, and there are political parallels to the shitty politics and arguments in fixing f1 to many of the issues that do get talked about.
I think people aren't quite sure what it is that makes you call them a poltard. Is it talking about the political? That usually comes and goes and not much comes of it. Is it the "lol memes and infographics" style of arguing? That's characteristic of /pol/ but it's not a right wing thing. Is it the potentially offensive content? No one seems to have an issue with the idi Amin Hitler thing, people usually don't fret when someone drops a slur here and there, and the most loud and repetitive racebaiting shit posting (which I can't remember it happening recently) is rejected by the board for being low quality posting.
Let me say something very un sjw: help us help you. If we don't know what the issue is throwing labels isn't going to help us solve it.

Just going to wade in here after not figuring out who's who in the debate
The 2016 US Presidential Election is pretty special right now because it's still in a 'meme' phase where the arguments are relatively inconsequential due to no actual voting/nominating having taken place. Obviously I am not the bossman but I'd say it is reasonable for us to poke fun at the candidates provided the angle isn't "vote for x, y is a shitlord" etc.
Since I've fucked up on this in the past let's avoid calling each other out for /pol/ shit as long as nobody is posting the infographics etc. like >>33220 is saying. Once the season is on again we'll have more to talk about.

Been having a belt scream issue with the car or a while now, that's been getting worse and worse.
Initially it was just on cold starts, and idling for a minute or two would make it go away. But lately it will randomly start screaming while driving when the revs drop (ie clutch in while stationary/coasting).
Finally pulled it all off today to see what's what, and found that the 8 month old spring tensioner for the belt system doesn't want to fucking move anymore.
Wasn't a cheap one either. I got the fucking thing shipped from Germany.
>tfw German engineering isn't what it used to be
Tapped it on the sides with a hammer to try and shock it loose, with no luck.
Got pissed off and hit it on the end with a hammer to try and force it loose, with no luck.
Eventually I gave up on trying to fix it, and resigned to ordering a new one.
Put it back in the car, tightened it up…. and the end broke off.
It's as if some idiot had been hitting it with a hammer :^)
Luckily, since it's frozen at a set length, and it's pushing (not pulling) against the now open end, it should be ok enough the time being.
Only hard part was trying to get the belt back on with no adjustment. Eventually I pulled off one of the idler pulleys, which allowed me to slip the belt over it with the pulley on an angle, and then I tightened the mounting bolt up, which pulled the pulley straight with the belt on.

super behind schedule too. an early shuttle mission was supposed to reorbit skylab. This would mean that the shuttle was supposed to be ready before 1979. I think a piece of skylab came down and killed a cow somewhere in perth, australia.
the shuttle represents an era where space became normal to america. It's a shame it never really achieved what we wanted (single stage to orbit, low cost per kilogram to orbit, and viable low cost platform so research could go beyond low earth orbit).

Backmarker 01/29/16 (Fri) 03:20:12 3bc773 No. 33307
Daily reminder that the ruskies did the smart thing and had heavy launch multi stage rockets (proton and energia) for additional equipment and unmanned satellites, and separate r7/vostok/voskhod/soyuz rockets for manned operations.
The space shuttle orbiter was partially designed by rockwell aerospace who also developed the B1 bomber (saved from budget cuts by reagan) the B1 did something similar to the XB 70 Valkyrie (most gorgeous and amazing planefu ever, complete with great name) in that the whole cockpit would decouple from the fuselage and eject.
The xb70 had sealing escape pods for each seat, the b1 had the whole cockpit eject.
The space shuttle was supposed to have a derivative of the b1 bomber's cockpit ejection system in order to have launch escape/abort capabilities (like every other american manned launch platform and all the ruskie ones).
budget cuts, and the desire to have 7 astronauts (which had some sitting in another structurally obscured area) made this impossible.
probably would have saved the challenger astronauts and mayyyyyybe columbia.
in f1 people get faggoty about muh safety toan ever increasing standard, in this case this was something fairly basic that everyone always incorporated that they just didnt do this time.

OH shit apollo 1. That's fucking interesting.
Gus Grissom was the second mercury capsule american astronaut after Alan Shepherd. The redstone rocket missions went into suborbit and were quite short. It was seen as somewhat embarrassing after Yuri Gagarin had orbited the earth for america to do brief jumps into space, but the Atlas rocket orbital missions (first with John Glenn in the mercury capsule) were still a bit off.
Alan shepherd had been in the cockpit for some time and was never able to take a piss. So when delay after delay happened he really needed to piss. Von Braun and the krauts didnt want to unstrap him and then go through the checklist again, so when Shepherd said "permission to relief bladder" they let him piss into the pressure suit and fuck up all the instruments monitoring bodily functions.
Grissom was supplied with a hastily engineered condom reservoir device should he have to piss in a similar way. This is the genesis of the idea of the astronaut diaper.
Grissom landed in the ocean (us capsules always had flotation devices and landed in the ocean as this was seen as safer, where russian ones landed in the steppes of kazakhstan) after a successful mission. The helicopter came to recover him and the capsule, but the escape hatch on the capsule blew (explosive bolts needed in order to remove in extreme haste like fire) and the capsule began taking on water.
The helicopter tried to recover the sinking capsule, but grissom was in the water trying to swim in the heavy space suit. Eventually they recovered grissom without him drowning.
After that, us capsules were equipped with a complicated lever system for removing the escape hatch. Grissom had long been suspected of pulling the explosives himself but it was eventually proven to be a random firing.
Grissom wanted to name subsequent capsules on his missions (as he was commander) Titanic and other sardonic names following the sinking debacle. Eventually they let him call the capsule "Molly Brown" after a popular broadway play "the unsinkable molly brown".
Commanders were no longer allowed to name capsules as a result of this.
Anyway, much later during the apollo program (first mercury, then gemini, then apollo), the apollo 1 capsule had a wire with stripped teflon insulation catch fire on the launch pad. Since pure oxygen (instead of earth atmosphere ratios of nitrogen and oxygen and other gasses) was used at this time for the breathing air in the capsule, the fire was oxidized and it became a very hot blaze.
The emergency hatch required cooperation of all three astronauts in the enclosed space to operate. They failed to do it in time and died.
The same explosive bolts that nearly drowned grissom, in their absence, killed grissom and two others.

great movie.
Deke slayton was the last of the original seven astronauts, he had a heart condition so they never let him fly until way later during the apollo soyuz test program. Where soviet and american astronauts docked their capsules for the first time and broke bread together.
He, like John Glenn got to fly again on the space shuttle (holy shit john glenn is still alive at 94).
Backmarker 01/29/16 (Fri) 03:52:28 3bc773 No. 33314
BTW WD40 was invented because the Atlas Rockets (silver bulbous one in john glenn video) would rust like motherfuckers (super thin metal that was stressed structurally, Colin Chapman would be proud) so this small company made a light anti rust product in a spray can. Turns out it was good at lubing, preventing rust and pretty much everything else. People would…ahem, requisition it… and use it around the house. Eventually they brought it to market and saved the world from rusty shit.

I might not be able to go to America anytime soon (Not really a popular holiday destination in the WAG household) but I do plan on going to Copenhagen the next time they are doing an engine test as they open those up to the public.
Pretty sad how many management shitfests Cop Sub have gone through.
It was founded by two guys; one who did rocket engines out of washing machine parts (and built his own submarines) and a capsule designer who has worked at NASA.
The rocket engine builder and the capsule designer had a massive hissyfit and the capsule guy left to go work on Mars One.
The rocket engine builder managed to piss off the guy building them their fucking DIY pressured space suit and now he has left to use the suit in his own amateur high altitude balloon ride.
The rocket engine guy fell out with the rest of the team and decided he was going to start his own amateur manned rocket building company in Copenhagen with blackjack and hookers.
Because rocket guy left, capsule designer came back as an adviser to the project. And immediately scraped the old idea and went to his original idea where the astronaut would be in a vertical position instead of the standard lying on your back.
Copenhagen now has two rocket engineering companies building, testing and launching in their fucking port and waters. As such Denmark had to very hastily write a space bill just to try and make sure they don't blow up the little mermaid statue in what has now become the Danish space race.

>"It is important to find the right balance between the chassis, engine and the driver for the sport to be competitive, but right now the engine is dominating, which is unhealthy. Cosworth came with a winning engine in 1967 that was exclusively for use by the Lotus team. It became very clear that the engine was going to be dominant.

It was ford that didn't like the pr hit of being a supplier to a single team so they offered engines to other teams as well.
Also the dfv was just the best all around engine, not the best engine. The Ferrari, matra and Alfa Romeo engines made more power, the repco was more reliable, the cosworth was just good at everything.

You answered your own question of sorts.
They spent more money and subsidized the fuck out of the engine (you have to realize that unlike any previous era of f1 all the manufacturers are only supplying other teams because they want more mileage and because they are required to; these engines are sold at a loss by all the manufacturers).

Ferrari only ever offered customer engines to BMS scuderia italia and to Minardi, but these were extremely rare cases totaling maybe 3 years out of 50+ of engine supply.
Engines that are customer status (sold to other teams) have nearly always been produced by companies that don't run their own team. (judd, honda, yamaha, hart, cosworth, illmor, matra,)

Also in season development of chassis and engine used to be much more significant before the reign of the rulecucks.
By the end of the first generation cosworth DFV's reign (1967-1983) the engine gained 130+ horsepower. From ~408 horsepower to ~530
The DFR (the last direct child of the DFV) was making 620 horsepower.
When the 1976 f1 season started, Lotus had been running lotus 72 derivatives (even the mclaren m23 was kind of cribbed from it) that had progressively decreasing competitiveness.
Chapman's radical ideas (lotus 76 with biplane rear wing and sequential gearbox, lotus 63 with adjustable torque split 4 wheel drive, lotus 56 with jet engine) had either not been fully realized, or (in the case of the 76's transmission) hated by the drivers.
Peterson had it put into his contract that he could leave partway through the season if Chapman's car was not up to snuff. The lotus 77 debuted in the first race of 1976 and Peterson declared it a dog and left for march.
Meanwhile, Mario Andretti drove for the Parnelli team (american team that actually managed to score points more than once) and on the grid at long beach, the team collapsed financially.
Andretti found out about this when an interviewer asked him what it meant to have his last drive in f1. "It might be his last, but not mine" he said of the team manager.
After the race, Andretti and Chapman met by chance in a bar, both of them at the nadir's of their respective careers. Chapman offered Andretti a drive, and right there, on a cocktail napkin, they drew up upgrades for the lotus 77 and planned Lotus' way forward.
A month later, Gunnar Nilsson put the car on the podium at Jarama. Then at Anderstorp, Andretti started from the first row next to Jody Scheckter who had claimed pole. At Paul Ricard, 5th place, at Silverstone 3rd on the grid, a fifth place for Nilsson at the Nurburgring, a 3rd place for Nilsson in Austria, a 3rd place for Andretti at Zandvoort, 5th for Andretti in Canada, culminating in a pole position and race win in Japan.

That's actually interesting right there.
I've always read it as Eco, as in economical, ie good fuel consumption
But the UK SkyF1 ads pronounce it more as Echo, as in ecological, ie good for the environment
Makes me wonder if Ford is having their cake and eating it too, and keeping environmentally conscious Europe happy, and "my fuel is cheaper than the rest of the world, but I still cry about how much it costs" America happy.

Just came across this while browsing news sites:
>ChemChina became a pesticide powerhouse in 2011 when its subsidiary, China National Agrochemical Corporation, acquired Makhteshim Agan Industries (Israel), the world’s 7th largest pesticide manufacturer, and became ADAMA”
>ChemChina’s interests go way beyond agrochemicals. Last year it acquired Italy’s Pirelli, one of the world’s leading tire manufacturers, for $7.9 billion.
http://www.globalresearch.ca/the-likely-monsanto-syngenta-merger-and-the-chinese-factor/5504608
I knew Pirelli was bought up by some company related to China last year but the fact that it's a massive fortune 500 pesticide company (in league with Monsanto) is kind of concerning. They will no doubt be able to pull some strings within the formula 1 political structure. just look at this new Pirelli calender photoshoot thing with ugly SJW women posing for the camera, honestly, wtf?

They also want the fuel stops not to be any longer than the current F1 pit stop speeds.
I can understand that as an increase in pit stop times isn't particularly helpful for racing especially with pit lane speed limits.
Really I think they should designing circuits so that pit lanes loses you only a bit of time.
Say like at Silverstone you built the pitlane where this red line is. If two cars were at Abbey and one entered the pitlane for a stop they would come out roughly the same time as the other car passed the pitlane.

I've just had a thought.
At some airports the refuelling tank isn't actually on the vehicle. It is embedded under the tarmac and the vehicle just carries a big pump which they connect through an outlet. see pic related.
Why is this not done at circuits?
Every pitbox would have a tank embedded under it. You no longer have giant tanks of fuel to carry around which is potentially dangerous (Williams pit fire in Spain) and you only have to bring the pump to the circuit.

Yeah, Canada is great in that sense. Don't they keep lowering the pitlane speed limit too? I know at the tighter pitlanes (Australia, Monaco) it was already 60 kph or something but ever since Webber's wheel hit that cameraman at the Nurburgring in 2013 it's like the FIA has been stealthily lowering it.
>Bernie and Jean want more pitstops per race (specifically inspired by Canada 2010)
>have tracks built/rebuilt with serpentine and supposedly safer pit entry/exit (Singapore, 2010-Silverstone, Abu Dhabi, Korea, Austria)
>enforce comically slow pitlane speed limit instead of decreasing number of people in the pitlane
>pit deltas are in the mid-twenty second range at most tracks and the entry/exit are virtually all on the racing line

>Why is this not done at circuits?
I was going to say that most circuit owners don't want to spend a lot of money on something that's only used one weekend a year but I realized sadly that applies to most of the new circuits in their entirety.
but if the powers that be are worried about transporting rigs and having loose fuel in the pitlane they should look into hot-swappable fuel cells. there's probably no way it would work but it might solve the problem.
>standard size (makes the idea enticing to muh spec component lovers in the FIA)
>pitstops will take the same amount of time regardless of the fuel added
>one more overcomplicated component that can break and 'spice up the show'
the idea to have all cars have an electric starter/all-electric pitlane was ditched right? that would be an essential component of my master plan. minor complications could be caused by the fuel cell being totally enveloped in the car but who let small details get in the way of a great idea?

They can't currently run on the electric motor but with revision they could and they left it as an idea.
Given that Le Mans looks like this currently they could build it there.
And embedding the tanks under the circuit could lead them to make it an automatic thing.
>Nozzle sticks out of the ground in the pitbox
>Car drives in and an inlet in the floor of the car connects up with the nozzle (like aerial refuelling)
>Fuel is transferred
>Moment it is finished it retracts back into the ground

daily reminder that senna's fastest lap at donington 1993 was an aborted pit stop because there was no pitlane speed limit and the pitlane was a straight shot.
Pitlane speed limits are retarded, careless behavior and shitty releases are what gets people hit, not pitlane speeds. Plus, with higher pitlane speeds, more incentive to get the fuck out of the way, and this way pitting doesnt automatically cede 20 seconds.

I used to live in the rustbelt, no joke every fucking day you would see a front wheel drive car parked with a deflated donut (space saver) on the front wheel.
Not only would it be on the wrong axle, someone had driven on it for more than one trip or 50 miles.
Bonus points for rust *repaired* with a rolled out coke can and wood screws or Chrysler group products with the hood retained by bungee cords.
