I don't think that would be the case. They should at least be on par with Sauber with the engine. The package overall looks very neat, if you have a look at their diffuser, they have a very highly developed one specially for a new team and Manor who have been around for a while and more or less had a year to develop their current car don't have that.

Their car does look SF15-Tish and that was a race winner. On paper that should have a podium in it this year and to get Grosjean as a driver is a miracle for them which brings the package together.

Oh yeah definitely.

I don't agree with anything C4 has done.

They are going to try to appeal to the younger viewers that C4 has.

They are going to try and link it in heavily with celebs for said younger viewers.

They are going to link with their other shows which are mostly shit ('8 out of 10 cats does Countdown' being the exception and like 75% of that is down to Rachel Riley)

They filled up with presenters and tried to breakout from the perfectly fine format of 2 experts with a presenter and technical staff around them.

Used the Chain when they should have made their own theme.

Gonna have ads during build so no more nice long uninterrupted top quality pre race segments that the Beeb did (Lee/Verstappen, Button/Rallycross, Kvyat being a bookworm)

It's going to be shit outside of the actually commentary (DC/Edwards being a great combo) which is sad because Sky is already shit.

Well, it's one way for FIA to find their magical 4 seconds. Also how will it ruin the racing when it could potentially allow for better cornering grip thus making room for more aggressive overtaking maneuvers?

There's tonnes of potential in it

But I guess you'd like to return to pre 68' when it was just man and machine.

fd67f7 No.37860

>>37859

the FIA could find their magical four seconds in innumerable ways. Going back to the original width with better tires and removed rev, and fuel limits on the engines alone would even do that.

Active (read:computer controlled) aero is only going to make a disaster of flaps and winglets that will reduce the role of the driver.

just as they did with ERS, men on a computer will map out when to use what, and it will be nearly completely automated.

It will ruin the racing by making the driver's individual input more irrelevant (thus racing will be processional even more so because the car's pace will be determined in the factory, not on the track). There will be reduced room for driver error and thus less variability.

Active aero can and will be used in a defensive fashion (reduce aero efficiency in favor of higher angle of attack on wings in order to make disruptive airflow for an overtaking car).

To say that I'd like to take things back to 1968 is a massive mischaracterization of my point.

Technology is not evil, automation of driver input is anathema to the sport though.

A wing that bends to produce less drag at high speed might even be acceptable, but a computer controlled set of wings that has variable settings, controlled in an automated fashion is both against the spirit of the sport and going to produce crap racing.

d5758c No.37861

>>37860

Seems like you took my point to the extreme as well.

Aside from having DRS I was thinking you would have wings that gave extra downforce for cornering and have aero brakes so you could brake later, more efficiently and more aggressively. It could work automatically or by some sort of fly-by-wire system.

I still think it's a cool idea and I think it's a shame that area is still pretty much unexplored

>because the car's pace will be determined in the factory, not on the track

but that's how it's always been

The pace of the car is determined on how it was designed/built in the factory. no?

d5758c No.37862

>>37860

>>37861

Modern super cars already have it so it just feels kinda uncharacteristic of the sport for not pioneering it.

fa668c No.37863

>and removed rev, and fuel limits on the engines

Fuel limit is the bigger problem.

They're only using around 11500rpm of the 15000rpm allowed because the fuel flow limit makes them start to lean out over 11000rpm.

But as far as more power for lowering lap times goes, I don't think it will help.

Case in point is Monza. Despite pushing 900hp, which is a figure comparable to the V10 era, they're way down on top speed on the pit straight.

Why? Because they're so slow through the parabolica that by the time they reach the big aero V10 car's exit speed, they've wasted a 1/3 of the straight.

Piquet's Helmet is a classic and recognizable (this is going to be a recurring source of comparison with current helmets being murky and confusing messes) design that gracefully incorporated changing personal sponsors.

While Piquet isn't a terribly emotional or expressive driver, it's widely thought that his helmet is meant to be a stylized tennis ball. This is in reference to the fact that Piquet's father wanting him to be a professional tennis player. >2015 4th, no wins

I know this is very tied to the Renault PU but it's doubtful that Red Bull can get a works deal or engine parity with Mercedes/Ferrari. They better pray the Renault engine improves and their 2017 chassis is a beast.

The reason most modern design suck, is that 99% of them have a variation of a top band design, usually for sponsor shit.

Pic related is what comes up googling "f1 helmet" and every single fucking one of them has a top band

(except Kovalainen's based Angry Birds helmet, but that design was 100% sponsor, not a "helmet livery")

No I don't like that or the fact that I don't really want to vote for any of the parties or the fact that the system is completely and utterly unrepresentative of the actual votes.

But I do like the fact I can just watch TV without hearing a "[insert politician here] approves this message" or that the parties only have a £20 million or so budget for campaigning.

I might not like them but ultimately I don't have to hear them.

Max Mosely, like him or hate him, he would always look at the interest of the sport before everything and would not just give in the whims of any team willy nilly.

-the muh senna requirement to perforate airboxes to reduce horsepower

-the muh senna reduction of displacement to 3 liters from 3.5

-the reduction of car width and introduction of grooved tires to slow down the cars in 1998

-the ban on engines other than v10s

-the ban on "exotic" materials

-the use of F1 to promote EURONCAP which made cars hideous, less fuel efficient, less diverse, and more unsafe

-various scams and illegal schemes and cheating when he was head of march

I struggle to think of a single positive

>but you can't let the teams run away with it

of course, this is why even people who didnt understand f1 like balestre were preferable, they at least mostly kept the integrity of the rules and prevented the teams from "legislating from the bench"

>the reduction of speed in the interest of driver safety is a less ugly solution than the halo or canopy suggestions no? even then, modern cars are incredibly safe, a freak accident shouldn't have needed those ugly solutions. just shows you the FIA's kneejerk approach to everything recently.

you answered your own inquiry. Even if slowing down the cars was better than these retarded "solutions", you recognize that these are kneejerk and unnecessary because you cannot eliminate risk, f1 is incredibly safe, and that they are concessions to solve a non existent problem.

plus slowing down the cars has been the objective that has been pushed since the mosley era (cornering speeds in particular are way down) and not only has it made f1 no safer, it has also ruined the racing.

Mosley's retarded shit made the cars MORE aero sensitive because reduced width and tire size got rid of a huge amount of mechanical grip. Mechanical grip is much more sensitive to the driver's input and their smoothness in corner and under breaking.

driver input with regards to the performance of the car has way more to do with mechanical grip than it does with aero.

the teams getting more downforce to compensate for that which was inexplicably taken away will only further the decline of the sport.

There is a necessity to end this style of thinking that it is acceptable to have rules designed to slow the cars.

the tires need to be opened up to competition, and the cars need to be 2 meters wide. There is no viable alternative.

Mosley is an idiot.

>The FIA actually used shitty F1 concepts in the new Formula E chassis tender

>The main objectives are to create a futuristic look and achieve aero efficiency: we are seeking to optimize drag with no extra downforce. Since this is a single provider environment, the technical regulations do not need to be accounted for in the bodywork design. A new partial bodywork kit will need to be provided without any extra development cost for the third season of the contract; the aim of this kit will be for the design only and not to increase performance.

Which is worse for electric power consumption: The weight of a closed cockpit or the drag of an open cockpit?

778460 No.38410

>>38409

Never mind that, does it bother any one else how they've essentially designed the look of a car; with performance as an afterthought? We live in a world of motorsport where efficiency or speed of a car comes second place to providing an entertaining 'show' or spectacle which really irks me.

d5758c No.38411

>>38410

this tbqh fam.

one of the ways they are ruining F1 is when they focus too much on making it a spectator sport.

Though I wouldn't mind trashing the current formula for something that would make the cars look a bit more appealing.

778460 No.38412

>>38411

I think we need a less restrictive formula. Don't design a formula around the looks of a car; looks should be determined by the deisgners choices; not a formulas. But yeah people treat F1 too much as a product that must be molded and sold to its fanbase.

0ad183 No.38413

>>38410

For Formula E I can understand it as they have outright said they will never have any form of chassis development at all so that the development process is focused on the powertrains and batteries (Despite them not being as open as they should be).

All they want from the chassis is something that meets the safety spec, looks good and is low drag so the cars can run longer.

Formula E isn't going to be getting faster anytime soon (Not that anyone actually cares enough to compare speeds/laptimes like in F1) but instead will be attempting (and most likely will fail) to make them run longer at the same level of current performance.

>I think we need a less restrictive formula.
