they look like both approaches (the aero kits are supplied by the two more of less identical engine suppliers chevy and honda) were to add "more wing." Still shitty.

the DHL livery looks cool on the honda one though.

The Chevy kit looks more refined to me, they at least made an effort to sculpt the sidepods and control airflow around them whereas Honda literally just added wings.

Some people complain about the looks, but they were required to keep things like standard mounting points and radiator ducting so I'm not sure why anybody expected anything different.

a3203b No.5088

>>5084
That is a "cheap" way of adding more downforce at the cost of efficiency. You can add more wings to work the air but it creates more drag as well and the quality of air that goes to the rest of the car also deteriorates.

The second image looks very inefficient, even unsable unless they manage to balance it with a high df rear. You would usually use the floor of the car to generate a good amount of df so you can cut down on the wings, I guess that is banned in indycar?

chevy kit looks more minimalist, agreed. also you're right about people expecting too much from this.

>>5088
IndyCar used to love to tout that the asspods were for ground effect, and since indycars were more ground effect dependent and less winglet/wing dependent, there would be cleaner air behind and more passing. Looks like that either wasn't true or they gave up on it. I'm going with the former.

where were you when the most embarrassing event in CART history happened?

9004ae No.6792

>>6791

i was on kinder garden, whats the history here?

e3ebdd No.6793

>>6792

Indycar used to be run by an organization called Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART). CART had different cars, chassis, tire, and other part suppliers like F1 in that it was not a spec series. CART had gained a ton of popularity in the 80s and 90s to the point where it competed with F1. Many F1 drivers went to the U.S. to race in CART.

Tony George (whose family owned the indianapolis speedway) decided that he wanted to have a bigger role in indycar racing, because he thought owning the indianapolis speedway entitled him to that.

He started a shitty racing league called the Indy Racing League (IRL) that only had 3 races, only raced on ovals, and had spec cars, and pretty much only american drivers.

People hated the IRL.

Tony George refused to allow CART teams to compete at the indy 500 in 1996 unless they gave up 25 of the starting positions to the IRL. This would only allow 8 CART drivers to start the race, which everyone saw as bullshit.

CART and everyone with a brain boycotted the Indy 500 and had a race on the same day at michigan called the U.S. 500.

This is what is called the CART/IRL split. People are still divided about this today.

The U.S. 500 was a disaster as all the cars crashed on the first lap, and everyone changed channels to watch the indy 500.

CART continued to exist until 2008, but it basically sucked bc it became the same as the IRL by 2005.

e3ebdd No.6794

>>6793

Tony George bought the remains of CART in 2008 and merged the series. Today's bastard indycar series is the IRL after purchasing CART.

oh and in 2001 CART had an oval race in texas (firestone firehawk 600) and the cars went over 233 mph on the 24 degree banking. drivers started passing out from the g force and they cancelled the race which helped bankrupt CART.

>The U.S. 500 was a disaster as all the cars crashed on the first lap, and everyone changed channels to watch the indy 500.

ohhhh i didn't know this part, i used to watch Champ Car on the early 2000's and IRL from 2002 to 2005 on a race basis then i lost interest and only saw the indy 500 and some races that were on tv from 2008 to 2011 and started watching back in 2012.

Does anyone know how is IndyCar doing nowadays? it's doesn't look that big but it doesn't look that small or underground either.

people forget that CART was huge. European tracks were being built for CART races, Porsche, Lotus, Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Buick, Ford and others had serious CART programs. Open wheel racing is a huge part of american racing tradition, all the way back to midget cars on dirt ovals.

Now Indycar is smaller than NASCAR.

Indy isn't really dangerous though. The dan wheldon crash is the result of having all the cars be the same on a very short track so there is less car spread. Other than that it's kind of difficult to hurt oneself at this point as helio and pippa have so masterfully demonstrated.

Oh yeah Dan Wheldon's death was because of circuit and the only way to prevent it would be to not race on that circuit or circuit style.

I'm thinking more about the pit crews. If Pippa had spun off a bit to the right she would have gone though into the pitlane. In a race that could cause problems for the crews.

If the pit exit extends on to the back straight why not the pit entrance?

CART medical director Steve Olvey, who was on staff at the time, discussed the crash in his autobiography:

>"During an attempt to qualify for the Indy 500, Gordon Smiley, a cocky young driver from Texas, was determined to break 200mph or die trying. Several veteran drivers…had warned him that he was in way over his head, driving all wrong for the Speedway. Smiley was a road racer and was used to counter-steering his car to avoid a crash if the rear wheels broke traction. While rushing to the car, I noticed small splotches of a peculiar gray substance marking a trail on the asphalt leading up to the driver. When I reached the car, I was shocked to see that Smiley's helmet was gone, along with the top of his skull. He had essentially been scalped by the debris fence. The material on the race track was most of his brain. His helmet, due to massive centrifugal force, was literally pulled from his head on impact…I rode to the care center with the body. On the way in I performed a cursory examination and realized that nearly every bone in his body was shattered. He had a gaping wound in his side that looked as if he had been attacked by a large shark. I had never seen such trauma."

Shit man.

>Indianapolis TV station WRTV reported the incident happened Sunday as friends gathered in Johnson County to watch the Indianapolis 500.

>David Wilson, 57, told investigators he was making dinner when his fiancee and another person were "talking trash about NASCAR," WRTV reported.

>IndyCar's planned 2015 season-opener at Brasilia in Brazil has been cancelled.

>The series confirmed the cancellation late on Thursday, although no reason was given.

>"[Event promoter] BAND announced today that the race scheduled for March 8 in Brasilia has been cancelled," read a statement from IndyCar.

>"This comes as a great disappointment, and we will have further comment when we have had the opportunity to talk with all of our partners and the authorities in Brazil."

>The event would have been IndyCar's first at the Autodromo Internacional Nelson Piquet, and was set to represent a return to Brazil after the Sao Paulo street race fell off the calendar in 2013.

>It is the second new IndyCar fly-away to have been cancelled at the 11th hour in recent years, following on from the abandoned race in Qingdao in China that was slated for 2012.

>Brasilia's absence means that St Petersburg will reclaim its status as IndyCar's season-opener when it hosts the series on the last weekend in March.

>That race will also mark the debut of the manufacturer-designed aero kits.

To be fair that wasn't indycars fault.

The circuit had a lack of funds to begin with and so scaled back the planned redevelopment of the circuit and then a new district government got elected in and deemed the race a waste of public funds.

Construction work has stopped and the circuit is probably ded.

The China race would never have happened because of shipping costs and I think lack of funds from the local government was also the reason why Sao Paulo left the calendar

I would imagine that granting a subpar and incapable race organizer the race would be a sign of weakness on the part of the IRL management.
