well, you could always burn biofuel but once the big car manufacturers are using electric motors in most of their cars none of them will be able to justify going into motorsports with combustion engine

0b7a1e No.6601

>>6599

don't make this apologist argument. Electric cars suck because batteries suck and thus range, longevity, weight, and packaging suck. There are more reasons, but hybrids and electric cars aren't the way the market is going because they're "better", it's because they are the recipient of enormous government incentives.

Fuel efficiency is not objective number one. If it was, crossovers (lifted sedans that look like suvs that weigh more, drive worse, have worse visibility, and worse gas mileage) would not be the fastest growing segment.

Crossovers are classified as light trucks in the us and europe (which makes no fucking sense) but that exempts them from corporate average fuel economy for cars (manufacturers have to have an average mpg in their line up) and puts them with the light trucks, which inevitably are worse at fuel economy than the cars and the crossovers.

The entire thing is because women who drove SUVs as family cars in the 90s liked sitting up high, and corporate bean counters realized that making these vehicles would be a great loophole to fudge fuel efficiency figures.

Fuel efficiency and alternative fuels matter, but do not buy this bullshit that hybrids and electric cars are the future and they have to be.

Additionally, manufacturers would gladly have f1 engine programs that have nothing to do with their road cars. They might say otherwise, but NASCAR (only pushrod engines, in 2012 they got fuel injection) and V8 supercars have large manufacturer support and volvo and toyota sure as shit make nothing similar to their nascars/v8supercars.

de145f No.6603

765f10 No.6620

What the fuck do you propose then? The only alternative that's better is to use hydrogen. Now they could use it to power an internal combustion engine, but why do that when you could just have it in a fuel cell powering an electric motor?

I'm sorry you're in denial, but fossil fuel powered motorsport will eventually die.

Even more insane when you realize that there were only 10 races on the calendar then, and with the first 6 places giving points. Also Jim Clark still has the most grand slams (pole, fastest lap, and win) at 8 of any driver ever. Plus he always drove for Lotus, even when the car was unreliable as all hell, and was not a complaining carbabby.

He scored the only win of the BRM H16 engine (which was a fucking beast, and sounds more like gear gnashing than engine noise) at watkins glen when the engine puked its guts on the starting grid.

Also in the 1967 Italian grand prix lost the lead from pole when he had a puncture, drove like a maniac, made up the lap of lost time (equaling his pole time in the process) and regained the lead in the last few laps, only to have a fuel pump failure which left him in third.

In conclusion: Jim Clark is GOAT

>Pirelli's current dry-weather range comprises Super Soft, Soft, Medium and Hard rubber, with the manufacturer itself making the Option and Prime nominations for all rounds.

>"If teams indicate four weeks before a race which two compounds they would like to use, there is still time for Pirelli to produce them," Szafnauer told Auto Motor und Sport.

>"The tyre choices we make could be kept a secret until the Thursday before a race. We would then have something to talk about throughout that day again."

>Opening up tyre choice could lead to much greater variation in race strategies, with teams able to select the compounds that best suit the characteristics of their cars.

>Mark Webber believes rapidly degrading tyres and overtaking aids like DRS detract from the appeal of Formula One rather than add to it.

>When Pirelli arrived in the sport in 2011 they were tasked with replicating the 2010 Canadian Grand Prix in which the Bridgestone tyres suffered an unusually high level of tyre degradation.

>Along with the introduction of the drag reduction system (DRS) - a moveable flap in the rear wing to allow chasing cars to run at faster speeds on straights - the new Pirelli era of Formula One resulted in more overtaking. However, Webber believes it has become too easy for drivers to pass and the emphasis on "saving" tyres means they no longer push during races.

Mosley seems to believe a budget cap is doable. It isn't.

The problem with what Mark says is that he is limiting it to two things when it's a huge change and will take a long time to fix.

If you go back to F1 when Mark feels it was best you can find multiple people complaining and calling F1 an utter laughing stock.

And coming from Mark it just sounds like a whining baby whinging.

Exactly. What people seem to forget, is that before they changed F1 to it's current iteration, there was literally ZERO overtaking, and people were complaining about the racing 10x more than they are now.

>pic related: it's how desperate they were to find ways to enable overtaking

If we want F1 that is exciting, has overtaking, isn't made a gimmicky show by mandates like the sparks or DRS, It basically involves going back to 1994 rules (pre senna death). That's an enormous undertaking.

Lauda had it right when he said that we should look at the last 20 years and see which rules were a positive change and which weren't.

The main problem we have with today's complaints and suggestions of improvement is every lunatic has memory that doesn't go back past 1998.

No one seems to realize that the restrictions added in for cost cutting made it *more* expensive by making teams follow the process of diminishing returns further in the fields of development that weren't frozen.

I'm frustrated half to tears that almost no one worthwhile is speaking up, and the few people that are speaking up keep suggesting MORE RULES to supposedly improve the sport.

Reduction of car width, wing width, wind endplate height, and similar changes all made the kind of aero that makes enormous amounts of dirty air (winglets everywhere, ducts everywhere) necessary.

That's a major source of the lack of overtaking. Somehow people looked at that and said "gee, instead of looking at the regulations, finding what promoted this, and either reverting the rule change, or otherwise holistically changing the regulations to steer people away from this, lets put a fucking wing that opens and closes (breaking our own rule on movable aero) on the back."

On another note. Rev matching transmissions are absolutely a driver aid, and are a huge part of how easy (relatively speaking) it has become to drive an f1 car. I am flummoxed that no one speaks about this.

Removing tech now will mean F1 be pounced on by fans who want F1 to be the top tech series and other series like WEC will take the piss out of F1 claiming it's stone age and archaic (Heck WEC already does anyway). It's like how NASCAR got abuse for still having carburetors until a few years ago.

There are people who are legitimately upset that all the stuff on the FW15C was banned, even the prototype CVT.

47cf0c No.6860

Even in F1 manual transmissions were in use until 1995 (the last race being won by one in 1992), and the first thing that resembled a revmatching/autoclutch gear box was used in the mid 70s in the lotus 76.

Watch the videos of current drivers driving old f1 cars, many of them struggle with it. Even if you can revmatch well, holding consistent brake pressure while downshifting and double clutching is a skill that is difficult for even professional drivers.

47cf0c No.6861

Active suspension and cvts would make cars faster, but people don't care about faster cars. If they did care, the dramatic rule changes every few years to make the cars slower would make them stop watching. F1 is about high technology, but not driver replacement.

0b7a1e No.6862

They also expect some common tech, it is common now and so removing it would be the equivalent of suggesting they go back to a full proper manual with a H-pattern.

A lot of people just want to see open wheeled LMP1 cars sprint racing. To be honest I can see where they are coming from.

If WEC made a sister sprint series with LMP1 cars I would absolutely love it.

0b7a1e No.6870

>>6868

i should have been more clear. The ban on driver aids is not against anything that makes driving easier, it's against active systems that control something for the driver.

Active suspension leans the car without driver input, traction control changes torque output based on the speed and the amount of throttle input the driver has, CVTs automatically change gear reduction based on throttle.

All of these take control away from the driver and have some of their own decision making automation, whereas Drive by wire is just an electronic replication of the throttle cable, and torque maps are a universal tuning of engine output based on a throttle percentage (not including the load on the springs, or the crosswinds, or any other factors and then making a decision).

Essentially, if it's not automating a control of the drivers, and isnt a system that makes decisions autonomously, then it's not considered a breach of the driver aids rule.

0b7a1e No.6871

>>6869

No one cared about common tech for the hybrid engines (which have no shared parts in other motorsport series). Plus there isnt even a need to change hardware, in the car electronics, they can just disable the blips on upshifts. And if that's not possible, they can re-engineer the gearbox (as they did for the engine formula change) or buy an off the shelf one.

Racing transmissions that do not revmatch are produced and sold in non-insignificant numbers.

f61523 No.6872

>>6870

I'm not so much concerned with "putting the control back in the drivers hands", like so many love to bitch about.

I just want to see cars with more aggressive power delivery, so they wheelspin or go sideways more often.

It makes the show more spectacular, and makes the racing better (encourages mistakes = opportunities)

Compare 2014 to 2015.

In 2014 the power curves were very aggressive, and the racing, and show, was awesome.

For 2015, the engines are less aggressive, and the awesome is gone.

Even if the "show" was great, F1 is about the sport. You really can't have the show without the sport, or the sport with out the show, lest it either be technologically pointless (As you said with nascar) or boring to watch.

0b7a1e No.6875

If you want cars with aggressive power delivery, a free formula with choice between turbocharged and naturally aspirated engines, sans the hybrid systems would more than deliver that.

That's actually amazing. Also, the lp5000 countach with that wing that totally doesnt do shit is beautifully batshit in a way that only 80s lamborghinis can be. Shame that no super car today compares.

it's fairly well documented that all that wing does is reduce the top speed some 10 mph. I believe Jay Leno removed his. Did you know that some of them have a front wing that actually produces lift? It was an importer's shitty attempt to get past bumper height restrictions.

of course it was.

The calendar is never talked about this early. Bernie clearly realising the calendar early to gain on something. Probably the deals with Germany and Italy.

Also by scheduling 21 races early he may get the teams that extra engine. Last year they wouldn't have got one because the korean race wasn't originally on the calendar.

Agreed. Going so far as to take the extraordinary step of confirming it a real leak, makes it pretty obvious.
