What would be some good banner and CSS ideas? Since the board's been around for a while now, I might as well make it look decent.

I'll put in anything related to fanfics (any characters, shipping, a significant scene, scenery, etc). All banners must be under 500KB and have dimensions of 300x100 for it to show up properly.

Since this board's hardly used, I think I'm just going to accept whatever comes in (if anything). One banner per franchise, please. The board isn't meant to be limited to one specific thing.

If the board becomes more popular in the future, I will do another thread like this with majority winning (in other words, if a bunch of anons like your banner it'll make the banner list).

For now, go crazy.

So, I started writing on a fic set in a fandom I can't stand in an attempt to see if I could try and make anything I deem readable set in that universe.

Now, I've come up with some truly unique and interesting ideas that I think could be used in an original story instead. On the other hand, I know that some fandoms allow authors to publish and put their their fics up on Amazon for sale.

Anyone else experienced coming up with ideas and concepts that they've chosen to use in original stories instead?

Also, anyone have experience with selling fanfics through Amazon?

There are some fandoms/universes were not having any of the main characters readers are most familiar and invested in would be a very hard sale.

I think you’d easily get away with it in something like Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter – where the world is so big and developed and filled with characters it would be easy to explore in greater depth.

I wish there was some sort of a fiction equivalent of Bandcamp around…

Authors could sell their fiction and reach out to readers, add story tags, add cover art and illustrations, etc.

Readers could read the chapters online as previews, download the entire story, individual chapters, or several chapters in whatever format they so wish, leave comments, ratings

I’ve been working on this original story for a while now, and briefly features characters and locations from films and books. It is partly a comedy, so the copyrighted characters/places are satirised and parodied, but is this enough for it to fall under fair use?

I could pull a ‘Rick and Morty’ and make the character look “like a legally-safe knockoff”, though that might make it feel cheap.

 No.379[Reply]

Which do you prefer? A fic that mostly sticks to the original plot of the original work, but spends a lot of time exploring the setting and characters that the original work did not?

Or a fic that does little to expand on characters or setting but greatly diverges from the original story?

 No.380

Ultimately I like the fics that deviate as much from canon as they can while still making sense

 No.389

Both fics can be a really good reading if done alright.

When it diverges from the original story, the new plot has to make sense and/or to contribute with significant changes that the original story didn't have, otherwise it totally loses its meaning.

you can do both of them at the same time tho

 No.390

>>379

I've found over time that I don't really care anymore how much the plot diverges from canon so long as it's coherent and not completely asinine, but what I really read fanfiction for is the characters. Whether it's expanding on the characters, or interaction between the characters, or exploration of the characters while exposed to differing situation, I can't read a fic anymore that does nothing with the characters.

Along the same lines but with slightly less intensity is my view on using the setting, but that might just be because most of the "fandoms" I have interest in have a vast potential for setting exploration/explanation that isn't too present in the source material.

I don't really care how much the plot sticks to canon so long as the characters and setting are used well.

 No.469

Depending on the fandom of course, I do enjoy fics that focuses on minor characters and lets us see things from their perspective, and follow their exploits. I rarely find the main characters of a story to be the most interesting ones to follow.

These stories work if the universe it is set in is already large enough for it to be lots of things happening, and interesting characters that aren’t given nearly enough screen-time in favour of the creator’s vision.

Little background: several months ago, I started writing this strange, surreal Legend of Galactic Heroes X Madoka Magica crossover that got me banned over at SV.

This is the story I got suspended for: https://forums.sufficientvelocity.com/threads/legend-of-the-illuminatist-madoka-the-revolutionary-human-incubator-war-quest-pmmm-logh.22145/

This is the internet trial they put me on: https://forums.sufficientvelocity.com/threads/2016-at-03-staff-and-john-smith.25112/

This is the ensuing chaos: https://forums.sufficientvelocity.com/threads/administrative-tribunal-commentary-thread.16633/page-69#post-5354454

 No.455[Reply]

I'm working on a longfic centered on plot, mystery and fantasy themed but I don't know if I should publish on fanfiction.net or AO3.

Here is the deal: ff.net is just fine. The first place you think of when you want to publish something, and there is a little bit of everything. I've seen really good stories and complete garbage equally, but that's not the matter. The matter is that I kind of ``really need`` customization features that ff.net doesn't have as it just lets me publish my story, and that's all.

And there's where I feel I need ao3. From a technical pov, ao3's is vastly superior. However, its fucking userbase. It has a direct influx of tumblr/sjws I can't fucking deal with. I almost think of it as tumblr's official fanfiction archive at this rate. I don't want those retarded bitches to touch my work, holy shit. I want to fucking stay from all of those infectious focus as much as I can.

Ao3 calls me because of its customization features but I can't help thinking of it as a gigantic archive for tumblrinas to post their shipping pwp garbage instead of something with a little bit of more quality. I may be wrong and haven't browsed the archive enough, but all I can think when I think about ao3 is smut and I'm yet to see some good fanfic on there not centered on shipping. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Pic related is what I found when I googled "ao3".

 No.458

I prefer FFN for the larger userbase. And I can't really into AO3. I didn't know about the difference in userbase. I thought AO3 users were just a subset of FFN users.

 No.459

>>456

I think you are right about there is a difference in certain fandoms. I mostly have been around the fandoms I'm interested on there so you may have a point is a fandom thing. I want to write a crossover, and one of them is… sigh, harry potter. Mostly because I kind of like the worldbuilding and I'm fond of some of its fanfiction out there, but the fandom is full retardation. The other one or two fandoms are pretty much small or dead and there is no fanbase worth of taking into account.

I liked ao3 because of its workskin feature. It lets you do some small tweaks with css. As far as I know, ff.net lets you use bold, cursive and underline as much.

>>458

I have the feeling it used to be/was supposed to be, but tumblr for what I saw won't stop talking about it as "the better ff.net" and I get the feeling it got filled with that kind of userbase. As >>456 says, however, could just be a fandom thing. I'm not really into that many fandoms when it comes to fanfiction.

 No.461

Isn’t FF.net more likely to remove ‘adult’ stories? I think I’ve read some authors being worried about that in the past.

My biggest problem with FF.net is their reliance on Google scripts, and ‘robots.txt’, which makes it impossible to see past versions of the site with Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine. AO3 also allows you to download stories as PDFs, which is nice if you’d want to preserve/archive stories.

 No.462

>>459

Yeah, if you're writing in the HP fandom you're going to run into shit, however desu senpai from what I know the HP fandom is shit pretty much wherever it manifests, so even on ff.net you'll be swimming in fecal matter. ao3 is worse in general than ff.net from a community standpoint, but in this case it's not "shit v. not shit" it's "dry shit v wet shit".

>>461

From what I know ff.net only really removes lewds if they contain some less-acceptable elements, such as involving minors, being excessively violent, or being extremely explicit at length, and even then it's usually only a chance it'll happen.

 No.464

>>461

Thanks for pointing that out about ff.net and its robots.txt, I didn't know.

And I heard about ff.net removing explicit stories too at some point years ago. Wasn't that why they created sites like adult-fanfiction.org ?

Any idea if ff.net keeps doing that nowadays tho?

>>462

I get your point. Guess it's inevitable. Gotta deal with it. Like I kind of already expected to deal with shit from that fandom but I still can stand the casual so cool and random xD default retardation from there, is the tumblr branch that kinda scared me after seeing some fics tagged on ao3 with stuff like nonbinary, demigender, demisexual and that kind of tumblr buzzwords. Lucky I think there aren't as many of that kind of fics (and people) as I thought at first.

I think KStew is sorta cute – from what I hear and have seen in reviews and rifftrax’ her acting was pretty lousy in Twilight, though I don’t think her character gave her much to work with either. All my knowledge of the series comes from what I’ve seen and read online, and trying to get through the audio book of the first one.

The actress who played Alice is Ashley Greene – she is adorable. After seeing Twin Peaks I kinda imagine Sherilyn Fenn as Alice though.

I think the first Twilight book is pretty lengthy - at least 400 pages I think.

I'm by no means an expert or great in any way, but English was my best subject throughout my K-12 years of education and I used to love reading books all the time in elementary school. Though I don't write too much myself anymore, I'm trying to get back into it and I like helping people with their own ideas if I'm able to. self-insert != bad character automatically.

So long as it's an actual character with real/believable traits and decent characterization that's treated semi-realistically by the fic then it's not bad by default.

Let random people on the internet read it if you don't want people that know you to recognize yourself in your OC.

And at least there's therapeutic value in shittily self-inserting. Kinda like daydreaming, only in a more permanent and revisit-able way.

>tfw I'm not the only person who wrote some kind of fanfiction for middle school credit

It's how I learned to type, too. School failed us.

Warning: I'm slow to write and post; but I think that if I had more interaction on my material, I could speed that up.

This one isn't exactly fanfiction, but it does have characters from other works. Please be aware that this story was originally a joke. Also, no, I'll probably never finish it, especially not if I go through with my original plan for it to be novel-length.

Lots of other boards have this, let's give it a go. Here's to /fanfic/'s first Feels that don't Deserve Their Own Threads Thread.

>tfw mostly rely on MSW to do the beginning-of-sentence capitalization

>for some reason it turns itself off

>tfw didn't realize this for three+ pages

>tfw an author you love like hell used to be really good

>but now they're just devolved into using their fanfics to push their retarded OOC headcannons for normalshit fandoms

>the one things they've done in the past year that wasn't SU was an AU in which two of the main characters attend and support a fag pride parade

>tfw you're getting sick and tired of all the liberal bullshit that authors wedge into their fics hamfistedly and that permeate the works of others

>tfw just want to read a goddamned fanfic without seeing something that makes me want to rope the author

>think about how I've never seen a fic with any kind of /pol/ undertones, or even anything rightist at all anywhere

>get even more annoyed

>didn't start off wanting a goddamned fanfiction of all things that supported, if even only implicitly, anti-degeneracy

>but now I fucking want it

>get an idea

>I could make one!

>think I'm a great man, I even know just the fandom and situation to use

>and the perfect pairing to impart traditional values while still being lewd

>sit down in front of computer, open word

>and

>…

>nothing

>I have no idea where to start, no idea of how to get to the envisioned situation in under 20k words

>try anyways, everyone knows that the best ideas come to those who fuck around until something works

>everything I write just ends up seeming like directionless setup or barely-coherent ramblings

>realize also that I have no idea of how I would impart anti-degeneracy in a way that wasn't hamfisted as fuck or that wouldn't devolve into 40k+ words of a psychological study that left little room for lewds that anyone except myself would enjoy

>ctrl-s anyway because force of habit, close word

>feel like crying

I HATE THAAAAT.

Worst of all.

FIRST PERSON PRESENT TENSE.

 No.391

Personally I think second person present tense is marginally worse – anything in second person really.

First person & second person present tense are definite deal-breakers for me.

Also:

* No sense of spacing/formatting the text, usually taking the form of a massive wall of text

* Lengthy author's notes at the beginning and end of chapters

* Original characters, often taking the form of self-inserts

My only green flag is having to look up the definition of a word whilst reading a story. If the author uses a rich and varied vocabulary that tends to show a certain degree of writing skill as well.

second person in fanfiction is and will always be shit; I've have in all my years of reading fanfics never seen it done well even once.

OCs are more of a yellow flag than a red one, if they're just used as filler characters to expand the setting or fill tertiary roles in the fic then they're usually alright, but if they start taking attention and massive amounts of time from canon characters then 9/10 times they're annoying as fuck.

Maybe I'm just more literate than most, but I've never had to look up a word found in a fic that wasn't foreign. I can imagine it being not that fun though; wouldn't it break the flow of the writing considerably, especially if you had to do it multiple times?

English is not my first language, technically my fourth – sorta – and I didn't even get that good grades in English at school. I think the main reason I now can speak, read and write it somewhat decently is due to getting access to the Internet pretty early on ('99), and being exposed to mostly English TV shows and movies.

Also, reading a lot of Lovecraft & Poe with their antiquated English has helped me me pick up a lot of dated words and phrases.

It sorta breaks the flow, but it doesn't take long to look up a word on Wiktionary, and I'm really into understanding and picking up new words. I even have a small notebook dedicated to writing down dated and less common words I come across and might want to use myself.

I don't think I've had to look up a word more than twice in one story at most, so it doesn't happen all that often any longer.
