The ones I recommend the most to people are ones that can be read without having much experience in the series its representing, although a basic knowledge of the source material can help you appreciate these even more. Sorry if you don't know much about these series, but if you're big on action, adventure and romance, these all have things you'd find entertaining/helpful (if you take the time to read them, that is…they're all quite long):
72 Hours by Anthony Marston (Battle Royale):
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/1501019/1/72-Hours "What do I think about it? It's fucking perfection. I mean, I look at my generation and I just gotta cringe about how much of it is fake and so fucked up, so doing this keeps things real. People become who they really are under situations like the Battle Royale. Also, I gotta say it's the best way to kill time outside of a monster truck rally. People killing people, just royally ripping each other to pieces and no one, no one doing anything to stop them."
-Battle Royale was the Hunger Games before the Hunger Games was even thought about, and was much, much more gritty. 72 Hours takes its cues from the Japanese novel and really only sticks with its premise: take 48 high schoolers, strand them on a deserted island somewhere, give them weapons, and force them to kill one another. Thing is, while Battle Royale and the Hunger Games only made solid efforts on fleshing out their main characters, every original character in 72 Hours gets their own plot development and story. It's not a story for the weak-hearted, and the violence and language can be cringe inducing at times, but its packed with some of the strongest storytelling I've ever encountered of any medium.
-Background Pony by shortskirtsandexplosions (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic):
http://www.fimfiction.net/story/19198/ -"My name is Lyra Heartstrings, and you will not remember me. You won't even remember this conversation. Just like everypony else I've ever met, everything I do or say will be forgotten. Every letter I've written will appear blank; every piece of evidence I've left behind will end up missing. I'm stuck here in Ponyville because of that same curse that made me so forgettable. Still, that doesn't stop me from doing what I love: making music. If my melodies find their way into your heart, then there is still hope for me. If I can't prove that I exist, I can at least prove that my love for each and every one of you exists. Please, listen to my story, my symphony, for it is me."
-I don't know if you're a brony or not, but I was pretty heavily into the reboot of My Little Pony back when it came out in 2010. While I'm not as diehard of a fan as I was when I was reading fanfictions of the show pretty much everyday, I still think it's a good series, and it's spawned some of the best fanfiction you can find anywhere on the internet. And trust me when I say that when I read the first chapter of this one back when it first came out, I had called it the most powerful thing I had read in over a year. If nothing else, read that first chapter. It should especially resonate with you, since you're a musician.
-Level Up! Love! by weluvgirlswithglasses (Lucky Star):
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4219558/ "I'm going crazy…she groaned inwardly. One little sentence from her and I'm messed up for the rest of the day? This is pathetic! The girl folded her arms and rested her forehead upon them, still keeping her face buried. 'She wasn't even talking to me,' she spoke out loud to herself. 'She didn't even…say that to me.' She sighed through her nose. So I should just let it go and move on. This is no way a university student would be behaving. If I'm not careful I'll wind up like her, completely unprepared for next year…"
-Whenever people ask me what Lucky Star is about, I tell them that it's pretty much like Seinfeld with Japanese schoolgirls. It really is a show about nothing, save for the daily lives and misadventures of 4 friends in the same high school. I had my doubts about it too when a friend suggested I watch it, but I think it's hysterical. This fanfic has that original flavor of the original series while introducing an equally hilarious romance between two of the leads. Might be worth checking out if your romance is going to be lighthearted. Compared to those other two I mentioned above, this one is all about the laughs and the romance.
