So how about all them fanfictions!?

I've spent an embarassing amount of time wading through the shitpile only to have no one to talk to on the other side.

Of particular note:
The works of EarthScorpion stand out to me as being all around solid and breaking the mould of the sometimes quite dull Zero no Tsukaima fanworks(all of which are still more engaging than the original). Overlady is frequently meantioned as the go to fanfic for newbies.

Another work in the ZnT fandom I liked was Halkegenia Online. The running theme here is "better than the things it inspired it."

(I watched SAO to read this thing and didn't regret it)
Type-Moon and the Nasuverse manage to produce some decent reading once in a while although your enjoyment of the fact is contingent upon you having penetrated the dense lore of its various series.

Beast's lair forums has a fairly comprehensive list.

While I'm not a big fan of Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, it's still worth a read if you haven't done so. The main reason to bring it up is because the author's favorites page is a goldmine that lead me to my all time favourite thing on the internet Hybrid Theory.
The pony fandom produces A grade literature as well, but that's a whole 'nother can of worms. Basically since the fandom is older there tends to be fewer obvious mistakes, unless you count "has ponies" as a mistake.

I've read EiS, it was okay but 90% of what made it good was present in the greentext stories.
Dead board is dead
*sigh*

as for comic book fandoms DC has
The Metropolitan Man
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10360716/1/The-Metropolitan-Man

and Marvel has Shocker:Legit
http://forgotten.faithweb.com/MaxLandis/legit00.htm

that both come highly recommended

I pop in every day at least. Although the fanfics I read and write are Disney.

Re: Spoiler

The best part about it wasn't even in the main greentext series and thus incorporated in the main story.

For a show that has been loved and hated by many, the Eva fandom really has some great gems that redeem and flesh out the characters.

This one would have to be my favorite of the bunch.

holy mother of fuck, that is a short story and a very, very fucking powerful one. I'm not a fan of present tense, but that story is just so fucking powerful.

My all-time favorite for Frozen fanfics is still Ice on the Rhine. It's just fucking crazy and awesome.

For other fics that I've liked, there's the Elsa Comes Out series, which is a shipping fic. I find it incredibly warm and fuzzy though, especially towards the end.

The Rune Book is also a nice gem, but the tone does kinda change for the ending.

Have you read the Cake fic?

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality is interesting, but it spawned a massive wave of retarded imitations, and now all the Harry Potter kiddies love to misuse "logic" and other words in their stories, so they can push their opinions as objective fact.

I wish I wasn't addicted to Harry Potter fanfiction.

I have no words for this abomination I wrote. Took me about a year of work before I finally wanted it to put it online..

(and yes Dutchfags, I really love footed onesies.)

Nice trick there, writing it in Dutch so we can't actually read it and know to call it shit and you a faggot. I'll have to try that out soon.

English might not be a first language for the guy. Judging from the profile he published it through, it seems like anon could be from the Netherlands. Run it through Google Translate.

I will agree with you, though, that publishing it in another language is a pretty clever way to hide any inexperience. If I were a new writer or shy about my works I'd probably publish it something nobody would understand. Translations sometimes make the story sound better than the original, imo.

Yiss, Dutchfag here. Considering re-writing it in English though.

>Have you read the Cake fic?
no but I read the author's note at the beginning and figured I got what the fuss was about

I'd rather not turn this into MoR circlejerk/slapfight/hate thread, but it's an interesting case.
For one it's not a very good story but for a completely different reason than most fanfiction and indeed it's very good at avoiding the "standard" measures of suckiness so if lack of plotholes is a primary criterion for measuring the value of something it sets a new bar.

Then again it's essentially a crackfic based on something Rosarch's plot once penned in "odd ideas" and the one futurama gag about the much more popular Al Gore book "Harry Potter and an Inconvenient Truth".

The author has written several short stories like it that were half college lecture/edutainment about some concept in cogpsych/statistics/formal logic/ethics etc.

It's just that this one took on a life of its own so he slapped an ongoing plot in there for some fluff and kept using it so it really did become a more popular inconvenient truth. Which is hilarious in hindsight.

It's not a Harry Potter fic really more of a book for those of us who read it at eleven and thought Voldemorts campaign of genocide against muggles was probably justified if snakes were sapient and we'd been treating them worse than Hitler ever treated anyone.

Found out I still had this one still online:

Alright, as much as I hate all the things I've read, there are two stories that I think I should share with you guys.

Starcraft: T rated action story about a hellish battle.
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/1785098/1/Starcraft-Band-of-Brothers

Super Smash Brothers: The greatest comedy ever written for this fandom.
