The only good fanfic is an alternate universe(alt. interpretation) because then you can create proper original content and branch off as your own production without copyright issues.

Spin-off shows are much better than their main series. Hence Megaman X > Megaman.
It's awkward to try to incorporate everything into one book because it breaks all the consistency and it contradicts it's continuity.

Star Wars EU books are effectively fanfiction. Same with StarCraft novelizations. There's plenty of stuff out there worth reading that's completely non-canon.

It's more interesting to make stories that build the world than it is to rehash the same narrow details. I think it's more interesting to read, too.

Alt universes are best, but continuations/re-tellings can also be right up there.
Not once found a prequel I like though.
