What are some things that will make you automatically trash someones fic?

>i suck at at summaries but please read and review :^)

 No.289

I'd have a much easier time listing things that didn't.

Purple prose, grammatical and spelling errors in too many places. I know you don't go to McDonalds and ask for a steak, but for god's sake if you're going to try being a writer, at least put some effort into improving your spelling if nothing else.

 No.293

First or second person narrator.

Song lyrics, it got to the point where I would copy and paste it into Word and edit them out myself.

 No.305

>>298

Why did people think it was a good idea to copy lyrics directly from a song they liked and paste it directly into the middle of their chapter?

Holy shit it was even worse when they would mix the narration in after every verse.

Anything that is overly autistic, or has sex related things in it.

What's the point of fanfiction if you can't write lewd things, anon?

>Tony can't quite believe it when Pepper tells him he's going to be a father,

I absolutely despise this kind of third person grammatical structure, and I don't know why.

Flashbacks to shitty script style stories?

I haven't really read any script stories, it just rubs me the wrong way

There's a combination of autism and amateurism that makes people create these kinds of authors notes:

>talking: "words"

>telepathy: "words"

>yelling: "words"

>thinking: 'words'

>flashback: *words*

>change in setting: *words*

>authors note: (words)

 No.369

File: 1438352239241.webm (234.11 KB, 512x384, 4:3, shutitdown.webm)

Announcement of perspectives, and changing of perspectives between characters mid-chapter.

Declaration that the writer does not own any of the characters or whatever used in the story, when fucking everyone knows that. Does anyone really think they are going to get sued or receive a C&D for their little story?

Demanding reviews/comments before releasing another chapter, though this is more of a red flag for the author.

(Unnecessary use of parenthesis.)

Giving a definition of a word used in the title of the story or chapter.

>don't like, don't read :)

Present tense.

I HATE THAAAAT.

Worst of all.

FIRST PERSON PRESENT TENSE.

 No.391

>>388

>>293

Personally I think second person present tense is marginally worse – anything in second person really.

First person & second person present tense are definite deal-breakers for me.

Also:

* No sense of spacing/formatting the text, usually taking the form of a massive wall of text

* Lengthy author's notes at the beginning and end of chapters

* Original characters, often taking the form of self-inserts

My only green flag is having to look up the definition of a word whilst reading a story. If the author uses a rich and varied vocabulary that tends to show a certain degree of writing skill as well.

 No.393

>>391

second person in fanfiction is and will always be shit; I've have in all my years of reading fanfics never seen it done well even once.

OCs are more of a yellow flag than a red one, if they're just used as filler characters to expand the setting or fill tertiary roles in the fic then they're usually alright, but if they start taking attention and massive amounts of time from canon characters then 9/10 times they're annoying as fuck.

>having to look up the definition of a word whilst reading

Maybe I'm just more literate than most, but I've never had to look up a word found in a fic that wasn't foreign. I can imagine it being not that fun though; wouldn't it break the flow of the writing considerably, especially if you had to do it multiple times?

English is not my first language, technically my fourth – sorta – and I didn't even get that good grades in English at school. I think the main reason I now can speak, read and write it somewhat decently is due to getting access to the Internet pretty early on ('99), and being exposed to mostly English TV shows and movies.

Also, reading a lot of Lovecraft & Poe with their antiquated English has helped me me pick up a lot of dated words and phrases.

It sorta breaks the flow, but it doesn't take long to look up a word on Wiktionary, and I'm really into understanding and picking up new words. I even have a small notebook dedicated to writing down dated and less common words I come across and might want to use myself.

I don't think I've had to look up a word more than twice in one story at most, so it doesn't happen all that often any longer.
