>Maybe I'm just more literate than most, but I've never had to look up a word found in a fic that wasn't foreign. I can imagine it being not that fun though; wouldn't it break the flow of the writing considerably, especially if you had to do it multiple times?
English is not my first language, technically my fourth – sorta – and I didn't even get that good grades in English at school. I think the main reason I now can speak, read and write it somewhat decently is due to getting access to the Internet pretty early on ('99), and being exposed to mostly English TV shows and movies.
Also, reading a lot of Lovecraft & Poe with their antiquated English has helped me me pick up a lot of dated words and phrases.
It sorta breaks the flow, but it doesn't take long to look up a word on Wiktionary, and I'm really into understanding and picking up new words. I even have a small notebook dedicated to writing down dated and less common words I come across and might want to use myself.
I don't think I've had to look up a word more than twice in one story at most, so it doesn't happen all that often any longer.
