So, I started writing on a fic set in a fandom I can't stand in an attempt to see if I could try and make anything I deem readable set in that universe.

Now, I've come up with some truly unique and interesting ideas that I think could be used in an original story instead. On the other hand, I know that some fandoms allow authors to publish and put their their fics up on Amazon for sale.

Anyone else experienced coming up with ideas and concepts that they've chosen to use in original stories instead?

Also, anyone have experience with selling fanfics through Amazon?

I'd want to know how to profit off this crazy hobby as well.

I'm doing it the other way around. I'm writing a self-insert story between me and a girl I like. Except I'm clothing it under the guise of fanfiction so I can test-bed the story out and see if people respond to it positively.

And she might hear of it/read it and not know it's her and me.

I tend to use the pre-existing universe and characters as a scaffolding for my stories, and build upon that.

Often I pick characters I would like to explore in great depth, till they feel more like original works, but still stuck in a recognizable fandom.

Tried that with one fic, didn't get too much exposure even though I feel it's one of my better ones. It barely gets 1-2 views a month.

What fandom/universe did you write in?

A lot of other factors could play in as well: the popularity of the characters, the length, the genre, the pairing (if any) and the site where you published it.

There are probably several ways to increase your chances of writing a successful (strictly in terms of views) fanfic: Choosing a popular fandom, popular/fan favourite characters and pairings, and make sure it is completely inoffensive so as not to attract the wrath of any SJWs.

Frozen. On FFN. I guess people really didn't like a fic with no Elsa and no Anna in it.

There are some fandoms/universes were not having any of the main characters readers are most familiar and invested in would be a very hard sale.

I think you’d easily get away with it in something like Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter – where the world is so big and developed and filled with characters it would be easy to explore in greater depth.

I wish there was some sort of a fiction equivalent of Bandcamp around…

Authors could sell their fiction and reach out to readers, add story tags, add cover art and illustrations, etc.

Readers could read the chapters online as previews, download the entire story, individual chapters, or several chapters in whatever format they so wish, leave comments, ratings

I’ve been working on this original story for a while now, and briefly features characters and locations from films and books. It is partly a comedy, so the copyrighted characters/places are satirised and parodied, but is this enough for it to fall under fair use?

I could pull a ‘Rick and Morty’ and make the character look “like a legally-safe knockoff”, though that might make it feel cheap.
