I've always been passionate about Tails and Fiona.. maybe because I can relate to some of the things that happened. I'm actually working on this huge project meant to do them justice.

The thing that bothers me about shipping is how most fans of a pairing go out of their way to hate on any potential romantic rivals (this is especially true when the pairing goes against canon). Shipping has a reputation for childishness because of this. I have more fun exploring the setting and world than I do exploring romances and characters, so I stick with whatever relationships exist in the original story.

I so agree with this. As a shippe/person with a non-canon/post-canon ship, I'm pretty accepting/tolerant of others' preferences, even those pairings which are directly contrary to the ones I like.

I HAVE encountered quite a LOT of people though who are just so tunnel-visioned into their ship (like you said, this is worse in the non-canon ones) that they attack any hint of divergence from their own, preferred ship.

This gets even worse when the ship requires one or both characters to be particularly OOC, or even switch gender preferences - the shipper then molds his/her mind so much that they can't accept that the character(s) in-question are canonically gay/straight and keep on believing/proceeding with a presumption that the character "just hasn't discovered himself/herself yet" or some variation of that.

I love shipping in fandoms with well-defined characters, and compulsively ship people who have little to no interaction in the source material, but have interesting chemistry by way of personality.

I hate shipping when I'm in a fandom filled with Big Ships to the point where literally every single fic is a ship fic and authors start relying on others' works in order to establish ships rather than setting it up on their own. OR, fandoms where shipping has been so entrenched that not having a ship is like not writing at all. Call my expectations unrealistic, but I expect each individual fic to convince me that they're a great couple. I want shipfics to have a purpose. I don't want canon material or other fanworks to do the convincing for me. I ship primarily for the relationship, not because they're cute together.

I'm not into avatar so I haven't really encountered this much, is it just teenage girls?

Anyway I'll agree to any ship that has proper characterization. If a character abandons a long term love interest and switches sexual preference I expect either an AU tag or an explanation and I'm fine.

Harry Potter has it happen all the time too.

Yeah it is just teenage girls. Here I am letting teenage girls rustle me. Fuck, I'm no better than /co/.

The only fandom I'm in is Disney and old animu so I wouldn't know that much.

But I do know that Jack Fucking Frost is anywhere and everywhere and being shipped with every. single. fucking. character. and that pisses me off. And I bet it's all teenage girls who think "they look good together". Seriously. They gotta stop with that look good together bullshit.

I agree with the ship stuff - needs characterization. I never really write AUs so any fics I do with ships/ship changes have to be explained within the context of the movie/series/canon.

I think it's usually safe to set a canon-story around 2-5 years after so you can have a feasible excuse to jump ship - relationship decay. I've been in enough relationships to realize it happens often - you lose interest, you drift apart, you both find that each other isn't who you originally loved, etc. It's organic and it works.

I'm really not much of a shipper, especially because it tends to enncourage bashing any other character that is a potential love interest.

That being said, when it comes to Harry Potter I like Luna/Harry fics, mainly because Luna is one of my favorite characters and those fics generally include her a lot.

I don't mind shipping as long as the author can make the pairing believable and realistic.

I quite like that pairing, too, but I've never been able to find any good fics for it. Got any recommendations?

Admittedly I rarely find good fics with it either. While there aren't many longer fics with the pairing, there are quite a few oneshots. I'd recommend JJ Rust's fics if that's what you're looking for.

If you're looking for something longer, you'd have better luck starting something you find interesting, and if Luna appears in early chapters that's a good sign.
