He became really depressed and withdrawn. He stopped playing outside with me. He always seemed to be in a bad mood, quick to anger.
So we grew apart, I wanted to be like my dad as a kid-but then I grew to be angry at him at the same time.
We argued a lot as I got older, began to think I didn't want to be anything like him. I was diagnosed with depression around the 5th grade when my grades began to slip hard.
Fastforward years later and I kind of got over all that shit to an extent.
I still didn't have the best of relationships with my dad, but it had gotten better.
And then he died suddenly in his sleep from an overdose of morphine because his liver (which had been damaged from the many surgeries having to use anesthesia to remove fragments of cartilage and bone from his knee) had built up a bunch of other medication in it.
So I never really grew to know him.
I got this unbearable urge to become a better man to honor my dad and to help my mom-but then I realized that I don't even know what a man actually is.
No one teaches you how to be a man, that's why growing up boys were allowed to be boys-it's all about the experience and making it your own.
When you're deprived of that-education making men more like women, society shaming activities and passions men devote their time to-they don't know what to do.
They're effectively prevented from growing up and becoming a man.
I can see how people might see masculinity as something bad-something they don't like in themselves.
They're taught from an early age it's bad to be aggressive, to get into fights, to do things on a whim that might be dangerous.
Men level out in their lives because they do these things in their youth-and ironically, this is what attracts women to them.
I don't blame women for what's happened to men, though I do blame those that encourage the further 'death' of the man.
Men have a hard enough time trying to figure out how to be men-let alone how to figure out how to be a woman.
