98um is like an expansion to 98, and has 3d backgrounds. 98umfe is a balance patch for 98um

 No.180

98umfe is coming or is it a 98um port? I really hope it's 98umfe and the port is good or I probably won't buy it and stick to occassionally playing 98.

Only the PS2 version has 3D backgrounds I'm pretty sure.

 No.192

I think people prefer vanilla 98 to UM or UMFE. You can just play vanilla 98 on GGPO. 2002UM is preferred to vanilla 2002 I think. But a lot of people still play vanilla 2002 on GGPO so if you wanted to try it you still can.

 No.194

>>192
People prefer 98 to UM because it's not an outright better game and you can make the argument that the balance is worse. FE is a better UM though and hasn't been available for people to have an opinion about it. Straight up if you did not go to an arcade in Japan you have never played FE. No one knows how people feel about it because no one has been able to play it.

 No.208

>>194

so it's like hdr vs super turbo where it just divided the community for a while and caused a problem?

 No.220

>>208
No not really. Japan plays UM because they had it and the rest of the world just played vanilla. The thing is, most Japanese players don't like 98 in general, so they don't play it either. There's a group of players that play it because it's the new version, but basically vanilla is the default.

why don't the japanese like it?

 No.240

>>226
I just mean 98 isn't a game with crazy setups and OS's and unblockables and silly stuff. It's just reads and execution. The few OS's that do exist are just to stop people from mashing roll or something or give grapplers better wakeup pressure. It's a very straightforward game.

 No.809

>>327
I wish the netcode didn't suck so I could learn that game.

Also, waiting for 02UM myself.

>>294
Tekken is actually harder to play than VF at this point. Namco doesn't realize that when you put out the same game with a bigger roster, more moves, and more mechanics, it becomes harder and harder to learn to play.

Also, Tekken is one of those "Artificial Difficulty" games like Smash, where if you can't BDC, you're fucked. Unless you play Akira, VF isn't going to have as hard of execution as just playing typical mid level Tekken.

Not saying that makes Tekken better. If anything, Tekken's a mess right now, which is why the community is dying. Nobody wants to fucking learn how to play, and it's just easier to pick up nearly any fucking 2D game, DOA, SC, and yes, even VF at this point

 No.811

>>809
>Unless you play Akira, VF isn't going to have as hard of execution as just playing typical mid level Tekken.

why is akira so hard?

 No.826

>>811
I main Akira.

First, he's got the highest execution demand I've ever witnessed in a fighting game for basic moves. I don't have a problem with this, because I can do crazy timing shit, as long as I don't have to do them in combos. Shoutouts to Knee, GBC, SPOD, 666P, FFP+K P+G.

Second, he doesn't have the same kinds of strings as other characters, which makes him a bit hard to learn. This doesn't effect high level players, but at a low level, it's something to consider. The strings and moves he does have are very obvious, however. Not much deception there.

Third, he lacks very basic tools the rest of the cast has, like strong lows, roundhouse attacks, safe moves with range, ect.

To make up for all of this, Akira is extremely fast, has insane damage, has great grabs, possesses the KNEE (which I think is the fastest launcher in the game, if I'm not wrong), applies pressure up the ass, will just counter your ass if he guesses right, and can fucking break your guard if you try and play defense.

2K2 has the best art

 No.1972

>>1922
KoF 2k2 had the third worst, next to the original Maximum Impact and 2k1. Everyone looks distorted and it really doesn't feel like the KoF "style."
XI, XII and XIII have the best art, though XII doesn't really matter much, being a beta. '97 had the most coherent sense of style overall, but it was basically just beta for '98.
'98 is the best one.

I was one of three kids in the 5th grade with an NGPC. I still liked my GB, but upon possessing that little handheld, I felt distinguished and honored; wasn't a game I didn't like. My library, which included Match of the Millennium and King of Fighters R-2, forged my love for SNK franchises and that lengthy roster of distinct and sexy characters.

My warrior woman.

I've noticed that the King of fighters series is very popular with the mexicans.

 No.2554

kof is seriously good, kof 13 in particular has one of the most balanced rosters in fighting games. fast combat, amazing sprites, great music and highly focused on rush down and offensive fighting that's why hopping is important.

 No.2574

>>291
Those jump options are useful as fuck, and make it a bit annoying to go back to other fighters. Once KOF clicks with you, you'll begin to wonder why the fuck other games don't have hops.

>>1922
'02 Athena's my favorite design (with '97 coming close behind), but the art in '02 makes me sad, at least when it comes to promotion artwork and the backgrounds (holy fuck, Eolith was bad at that). The actual sprites range from just fine (most of them) to "why do Kim's pants have that many frames of animation."

>>2331
I don't think I can trust you with 2006 above anything and 2000 below '94.

would probably go (ignoring original '02 and '98, although I'd probably just swap XIII and 2002's spots and call it a day):
2002UM > XIII > 98UM > 2000 > 97 > XI > 96 > 99 > 95 > 94 > 2003 > XII > 2001 (it's that fucking dumb) > the rest other than the NGPC games (which are great)

but this one is just personal opinion, rather than any statement of objective fact

>>2553
I'm intensely curious as to what started this. Anytime I look up stuff about KOF, it's in Spanish or Portuguese. South America seems to love KOF.

My understanding has always been that Neogeo cabinets, with the multiple game switch, were a much cheaper option for S. American arcades, leading them to be much more prevalent for a longer time down there. Even if that's not true anymore, the arcade culture down there developed with a lot of KOF and other SNK fighters, and still is pretty strong today.

O.k ex kyo and classic kyo.

A little history for ppl who don't know bout the reasons for the variation of the two kyos; classic kyo is the dude in the white jacket, he originally used a ground fireball, and a super that filled the screen with fire pillars.

However before the events of kof 96'; kyo challenged Goenitz and was defeated and so kyo developed new moves, trading his ground fireball for very effective rekkas and a even intense screen filling super. And for some reason he gets a white jacket.

I believe the reason why Kyo's movest was changed was to differentiate him from Iori who uses ground fireballs.

I might as well talk about Leona.

Before the events of the kof series; Goenitz visits Leona's village to try recruit everyone there (they were all orochi bloodline members), he was refused and so Goenitz corrupted the leader's daughter; Leona.

When night fell Leona underwent the "Riot of the blood" and rekt everyone.

she eventually regains consciousnesses and wanders off; dazed and confused. after some time she is discovered and adopted by Heidern as a daughter and soldier.

she then first appears in kof 94' with Ralf and Clark as part of the Ikari warriors.

in the Kof series; Leona is a charge character with high execution and strategic requisites for effectiveness. she excels in punishing jump ins and hoppers. contrary to her charge nature she is not good at defense and is better for rush down.

KOF uses it to encourage agression and to effectively beat sweeps.

Short story?

Lack of tradition, marketing and differences in operation between Capcom and SNK.

—————-

Long Story?

SFII hit the market first and was making bank on people's quarters all over the US so arcade owners just bought it because that was what people wanted to play. The number of Neo-Geo machines available compared to the the number of CPS-2 Boards was just small despite Capcom cabinets being more expensive because if an owner had to choose between a CPS-2 Board which was more or less sure-fire way of making lots of money or risking with this other slightly cheaper fighting game, they'd go with the first (especially when Fatal Fury didn't do so great). When they bought Neo Geo cabinets, they'd go for other franchises such as Metal Slug since it wasn't a fighting game and had the potential to attract another kind of crowd (since the Fighting Game players were all playing SF).

Neo-Geo MVS boards were relatively cheaper and more cost-effective as they work with ROM Cartridges so it was easier for owners in China/Korea/SEA/Latin America to get one with multiple slots and just change cartridges - or later buy bootlegged ones with multiple games burned in the ROM - which accounted for their bigger presence outside of the US.

Along the same lines, the majority players outside of the Japan/US never saw a MvC2, CvS2 or SF3 cabinet as getting those boards were ridiculously expensive and hard to pirate (which even was a problem for the availability of Super Turbo and Alpha 3) so to play the newest shinier thing, or a fast paced fighting game, you'd play KoF outside of the US while in North America you had newer Capcom games to play at arcades.

On top of that, Capcom knew they had something big in their hands worked hard to actively cultivate a brand that was part of the pop-culture of the '90s in the US with comic books, cartoons, a movie, toys, etc. In fact, thanks to licensing they also managed to get that in Latin America and Street Fighter is actually more popular there than KoF with the general public (as around and you'll find more people who know who Ryu & Ken are than people who know who are Kyo & Iori) although with the actual people who play fighting games KoF is bigger.

This is something that SNK didn't do in North America (they got the OVAS dubbed but that was it) and they are still not marketing that shit properly two decades later (fuck, Skullgirls had better marketing with far less resources). By late 90's, when they actually started to TRY market the games they actually focused on the markets they were stronger - i.e. not North America. The anime boom also happened way before in Latin America (and even before in other East Asian countries) which made players more comfortable with the aesthetics of the game.

Last, it didn't help that the first KoF to reach the home-market in North America during the golden-age of Fighting Games was KoF '98 for Dreamcast and the only other was KoF '99 (also for Dreamcast, released in April 2001, literally the month after Sega discontinued the console) - the fact that they came years later after year of the title also made seem they were already outdated.

The home-market was a huge blind spot for SNK. The previous releases were overwhelmingly Japan-only and most were for consoles that had a minority of market share such as the Neo-Geo AES, the Neo-Geo CD and the Sega Saturn - it only got support in consoles that people actually owned in NA when SNK started releasing collections in the second half of the 2000's and it happened almost stealthily with little-to-no marketing. While in China/Latin America, rampant piracy made it easier to acquire and play some of the these Japan-only releases (like KoF '98 for PSX).

In all, SNK never had much momentum in North American market due to having to compete directly with Capcom - which was far better financed - and overall poor business sense.

It's really confusing when you think about Kyo in general.

His classic self has the advanced techniques he developed for fighting stronger opponents but his Ex self is considered the way he is now in this day and age.

Even in KoFXIII during the pre-battle dialogue people talk to classic kyo like kyo has gone back to old habits.

So basically his old habits = his newer developed techniques, but his older self relies on older techniques which technically means he's gone back to older riskier habits?

Yes. Crossups are essential to any fighting game. Specially on hard knock-downs.
