hey /film/, i've been wrestling with a thought.

Do you necessarily have to believe that your "favourite" film is the "greatest" film. For example, when someone asks me what my favourite film is I usually say Mike Figgis' Leaving Las Vegas, mostly due to how the film it struck me on a deeply personal and emotional level, though thats not to say that i necessarily believe it to be the greatest piece of technical cinematic storytelling ever constructed.

So, is it disingenuous to call a film your "favourite" even though there are other that you may feel surpass it.

Putting the inevitable discussion regarding the objectivity in art aside, I don't really see what's so hard to get about this, somebody asks you about your favorite movie, you list the one you have an emotional attachment to, somebody asks you what is the greatest movie of all time, you answer with whatever you think might be one.

My favorite film is probably Shattered Glass. Ask me if there are better films out there than Shattered Glass.

I barely remember many of the "greatest films ever" which I only watched when I was younger. Most of my favorites come down to titles I've seen within the last few years that left a strong impression.

Leaving Las Vegas resonated with me deeply. Far more than I normally expect a film to. It has stuck with me for years, and it kills me Cage doesn't slow down and pick some roles with more substance.

Also, I don't think it's disingenuous to call a film your favourite, regardless of quality. I think personal preference is of course subjective. Look at the amount of people who think Captain America 2, The Dark Knight or The Avengers is one of the greatest films of all time.

My friend said to me the other day he wonders why Captain America 2 will not get nominated for best screenplay. I had to contain myself.

As long as you admit to the fact that it is not the GREATEST but your FAVORITE then you're fine.

I feel this way about music. I have two separate opinions on what I think the greatest album is and what my favourite album is: Michael Jackson - Thriller and Arcade Fire - The Suburbs respectively.

At this point though I don't think I could make a comfortable decision on what my favourite film or the greatest film is.
