What do you think are the films everyone on /film/ (or elsewhere) should see in order to have a more valid/informed opinion on film?

 No.1924

Too many to count, the board is already lost to the plebs, and it started out so good.

 No.1929

Doesn't exactly matter which ones, but if you've seen less than 1500 'arthouse' films you shouldn't be on this board

This is an insanely stupid post, but I will agree with the fact that the amount of films you have seen is relatively vital when it comes to having a "valid" opinion on film, whatever that means. You can't just watch "/film/'s 50 essential's" and expect to have some greater knowledge that those who haven't seen those films don't have. And scope does come from great movies, but you also need mass to be relevant, at least I think so.
I also hope it goes without saying that you shouldn't get your mass from watching every mainstream movie made in recent time.

 No.1972

Yeah, even watching subpar movies helps you gain a better understanding of the full range of things that filmmmakers have tried, and how those ideas succeed or fail onscreen.
