Film Club #15 - The Strange Color of Your Body's Tears (Hélène Cattet & Bruno Forzani, 2013)

His best film? Currently I've only seen (and loved) Le Trou, and at the time I had never heard of this man, despite him seemingly being responsible for several classics. I plan to eventually watch them all but what are the essentials/your favourites?

Le trou is certainly one of the best prison films ever made. I've seen a few other Beckers, all were quite enjoyable.

My second favorite is Touchez pas au Grisbi (1954) which is a worthy prototype for the French gangster films later popularized by JP Melville.

Casque d'or (1952) is more of a costume romance. Pretty good in that respect, but different in tone from the first films mentioned.

Goupi mains rouges (1943) is not as widely seen, but it's a satisfying mystery that takes place in a provincial French family inn. It reminded me how much I like certain ideals of leftist directors, even though I'm not so hot on their chosen political parties.

L’été meurtrier (1983) is directed his son Jean, but I'll shoehorn it in to say Isabelle Adjani is stunningly beautiful in it.

Would you recommend the last one beyond Adjani being in it?

I'm not sure I'd call it essential viewing, but it's good enough to watch at some point. Apparently it was a big hit in France in the 80s.
