Anon, this is a great opportunity to teach these plebs about artistic cinema. If they signed up to a film studies course, then they must be willing to look a little deeper than what they're being shown right now by their teacher.

You can then show them something accessible like The Thin Red Line or Breathless and them ease them into more complex stuff later on.
