Just watched Noah. It was like Evan Almighty, but without any attempt at humour. Why did one of the few good mainstream directors make such a boring, ugly, simple, unnecessary and dumb movie? Did I miss something?

Cringe pic related. This panning comes with saucy string instrumental music and is a contrasting example of the directors' otherwise convincing use of music, montage and camera movement.

No idea, haven't seen it. Has he become particularly religious lately? Maybe he was aiming for a cashgrab so much that his craft suffered?
It looks like the first project he was ever credited as writer, director AND producer. So he was all-in.

I liked it.

It looks like there's some type of agreement to make movies related to Judaism in Hollywood?

Most of biblical films are from the OT.

What I likes about the movie was first the stencils, gorgeous.
The other thing was exactly what you disliked: the fantasy feels.

There's like some kind of expedition in religious movies to make them science-based that strips part of the magic from them.

But that's the point: a miracle is a miracle, something we cannot explain.

If I remember correctly, Aronofsky intended for the Fountain to explain his spiritual beliefs. So that's quite a bit different from Christianity/Catholicism.
