I would like /film/'s input on movies with manipulative narcissists. There are several lists online, but they tend to showcase a lot of painful to watch chick flicks. I thought /film/ might have some insight on more artistic/insightful works.

Mildred Pierce comes to mind for manipulative narcissism. That reminds me there was an HBO miniseries version starring Kate Winslet and directed by Todd Haynes. I only saw the first episode but it was well-made. I need to revisit it.

Joan Crawford is also in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? It's not my favorite, pretty (unintentionally?) campy at times, but it fits this topic and you should probably watch it sooner or later.

One more I can think of is The Rise and Rise of Michael Rimmer which I watched after it was mentioned in some other thread here. So I'll pay it forward and recommend it myself. I think you'll like it.

Throne of Blood is a good one to watch
toss in the Welles and Polanski versions of Macbeth while you're at it

I'm not sure this counts (I haven't seen it in a while) but you should watch it anyway…

I'm looking for the name of a black and white american movie I saw a long time ago about a gorgeous film star that loses her sanity. It was supposed to be quite famous in it's time.

A fun branch to explore would be cult documentaries. Not cult classics, but literally about cults.

Everyone probably knows about the excellent PBS Jonestown doc (Life and Death of the Peoples Temple), but here's one from a couple years ago that's a little farther under the radar. It's a 1970s Los Angeles hippie sex drugs rock and health food cult.

I loved the Source Family doc. Read about David McGowan's research if that spooky ass era interests you.

From what I can tell he lists the military connections to a lot of famous people in the Hollywood scene at the time, with the implication of something mysterious at hand. But I think you'd observe the same sorts of connections given any group of people at that time. There was a high level of military participation due to WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Then all the vets came home and had a bunch of kids.
